Hype For Upcoming Games: The Matrix Online City Of Heros SoR WoW DnL RyL MeO
I think casual players will love this game because it's easy to play, you can jump right in and get groups and you can log off after only playing a few minutes or a couple hours and have that "I got some stuff accomplished" feeling and it's fun for the most part. Power gamers will get bored with this game really really fast. For me, I can play 10+ hours a day and on the 2nd day of beta I cancelled my pre-order copy because to me that game is so repititious and boring I just couldnt take much more of it. Maybe there's more gameplay at the higher levels but I had a hard enough time trying to stomache the game long enough to get my hero to level 14 so I could try out flying, which was pretty freakin cool though, I'll give em that .
And people keep trying to sell the "story" in this game, personally I didnt see much of one, but again I only played about a week and a half and my highest character was only 14 so maybe the story starts getting interesting after that, but I personally do not play MMORPG's because they have a good "story".
As for the question about 56k connection and lag. My connection speed is 26.4kps and my computer meets the minimum requirements exactly and I had very little lag. The only time the game was unplayable was when all the pre-order beta people were let in and they were stress testing the servers and there would be times where running through big crowds of people would bog down my machine but thats the price you pay for having a P3 800 and a GeForce2
My Conclusion:
First timers and casual gamers might find the game interesting but power gamers will more then likely get bored with it very fast due to lack of content and repetative gameplay, it's definately not worth leaving EQ or DAoC for IMO. Plus $50 and $15 a month is a rediculous price for this game, it might be worth a try if it was $30 and $10 but no way it's worth 50/15.
This is just my opinion, I know some people love this game and I know others who really dislike it. My best advise would be to read as many reviews as possible before purchasing this game.
I wasn't planning on buying this game, expessaly since I'm by far more interested in a fantasy setting then a Superhereo one, but after hearing the postive responsise by the people in beta, I can honestly say I'm excited to give this game a try. True it doesn't have a lot of boons for hardcore gamers, but thats not what I'm looking for right now.
Let me just set the record straight, I'm a guy, who like a lot of people on this sight, is waiting for world of warcraft to come out. The problem I've run into is that ever since I've cancled my DAOC subscription, I've been buying/beating a slue of x-box titles. So many infact, that I"ve already blown about 300 dollars on games, in the last two months. I need something the curb my extrodinary apitate for gameing and from the sounds of it COH is it. It's quick action and short play curb, will allow me to reach a the pinical of content, just about the time blizzard gets off their arse and releases the stupid thing.
Don't get me wrong, I have no illusions about this game having a lot of high level content, I know it doesn't. The most I'll say this game will hold me over is about five months, but still thats five months of not buying x-box titles, which means I no longer have to take five zoloft everytime I look at my bank records.

So stop arguing opinion back and forth, just accept that you both apprecate diffrent things and be done with it.
IMO this is what CoH has <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The best combat gameplay by FAR.
The best character look system by far.
A great character advancement system that will give you 20 customizable abilities by level 40.
Some of the coolest abilities in any MMORPG including flight, super jump, lift, propel, the entire Martial Arts set, and more.
Good mob AI right from the beginning. Most games make you grind through stupid plain low level mobs while CoH tries to make the game fun from level one on.
For those that do not like it I would say maybe the game isnt for you, and maybe MMORPGs in general are not for you. If you find that CoH is a grind it is because you made it one. I think CoH is well suited for the casual gamer and there.
CoH is about having fun playing the game. It is not about hording gold. If you want that play a Terran trader in Earth and Beyond. You will have tons of gold.
Not all games are all things for all people. For those that like CoH they really like it. Those that bash it tend to be power gamers who played 10 hours in one sitting then said it is boring.
I don't know why, but so far City of Heroes is the only game so far that I can play a "healer" type character. For me, City of Heroes is great mmorpg and I enjoy it a lot so far, it's understandable that some of the poster here do not like it. Everyone can't like every game.
This is the best MMORPG I have ever played. I am completely addicted and I have been playing for weeks (beta and now the head start). I am somewhat of a hardcore gamer, and this game just keeps getting better and better as time passes.
At the end of a game session, I am usually tired for the day and then sign out. About 10 minutes later, I want to come back online, though...that is a testament to how addictive the gameplay is in this game. To me, this game is head over heels better then L2, SWG, and DAoC. It is comparable to EQ for addictiveness but a lot more newbie friendly and a lot more casual. I know at least 10 people who are giving up EQ for this game, as it is something fresh, fun, and has the same addicting flavor that EQ does.

If you never wanted to be a superhero, don't play it. It's that simple. If you like to grind through levels and be uber, don't play it.
CoH is all about the fun of jumping rooftop to rooftop and dropping into a crowd of thugs. It's about wading into a crowd of 15 bad guys with 4 buddies at your side and a fireworks show erupting around you. It's about having wonderful tools to make your own fun.
I love how people are whining about no money, its too "simple".
Guess you'd throw Chess into that bucket too?
Some of the best games in history have no notion of money. I'm not saying this game may lack some depth to go long term for me but I hardly think the fact that it lacks a few of the more typical traits of other MMORPG's qualifies it as not worthwhile.
At the very worst, I expect a good solid month of fun gameplay. Whens the last time I got that from any game these days? Far a few between for sure ... Iron Storm is sure making a great coaster atm.

i'd say, if you like to play a lot in your games, theres a chance of burning out. this is more of a laid back mentality thing. shallow and fun world and story, fast paced fighting, great grouping, and a lot of thugs to kill. if you're lookin for a second game just for fun, this is it.
if you're lookin for something to play hardcore, i'd advise against it.
now, theres people who would disagree, simply because every gamer is different:)

Influence is like money in a way, you can 'buy' enhancements with it, but there is no conspicuous consumption, you can't show of your stuff, or be able to say you finally saved the money to buy such and such. There is no huge gap between influence rich and influence poor to make people want to become merchant princes, and there is no 'uber loot' for people to lust after and pay huge amounts for (at least in the low lvl game, not sure what happens when you start needing single origin enhancements to get the edge) Also enhancements are lvl based so by the time you are able to use them i guess you can buy them.
In this way CoH does have 'money' of a sort, what it doesn't really have is an economy. Most people i met would just give away enhancements to someone who could use them, and there didn't seem to be much desire to accumulate stuff. Although that may also be cos they give you a very limited number of storage slots for spare enhancements/inspirations, however I think that is good also cos it makes you think about what you need to keep.

The game is put together really well. But the end game does scare me. They should imho, have put City of Villians out at the same time. It shouldnt be and addon. This way the end game would be PvP.
First you have to understand that just because a game is a MMOG does not mean that it is 100% comparible to other MMOGs. There are enough of them out there now that they come in different 'flavors' in an intent to appeal to different segments of the MMOG player community. This does not necessarily mean a game is good or bad, it just means that it may or may not appeal to your particular playing likes. In the terms of game quality, CoH is very well planned, very stable and delivers well on what was described to be the initial scope of the game.
You should not play CoH if you must have the following in your MMOG: Loot, crafting, a need to camp mobs
You should wait on playing CoH if you must have PvP.
You should play CoH if you are interested in a fast paced action game with a storyline, like to group with people (although it isn't required) and are not a stats freak that feels compelled to min/max your characters.
Is CoH drastically different from other MMOGs, no. That said it is different enough that is has surprised a lot of people. And I am sorry but anyone that played for 1 week of the beta and then got bored shouldn't be your primary source of reference. There is no way they advanced far enough in the game to see beyond the starting point and it was a BETA where the world is static and not a changing environment, that is something that happens after release.
Finally I would say that if you are curious but think it may be lacking, just wait a couple months to see where they take the game and how it progresses. You don't have to be there from the beginning to still have fun and succeed. CoH handles level diversity very well which is something you don't find in other level based MMOGs.
i went out and got this game the first day it was out and i think its got a pretty good gameplay going. Ive played a couple of mmorpgs and this one has me hooked from the tutorial. it rarly lags with my 56k, which i am very pleased with. When u do missions with a team the mission fixes to how many ppl are in the team and there lvls to give a better gameplay. The ideas of events just happening out of the blue is good 2, like the alien invasion on the last day of beta.
i also agree with Malkavian that pabloex is on the mark.
First... Someone up there said you consumed influences and they wear off.. NO.
That's Inspirations, they drop off some mobs, think of them like potions in most mmorpgs, they heal, or give a minute long buff. Some even revive/rez you.
Influence is the money of CoH and can be traded. As can the "enhancements". The "rare drops" are single origin enhancements which drop off boss class mobs.
No, you do not even get some shiney breastplate of uberness. No, you can't craft. If those things are vital for you, this is not the game for you. I was wary of this because I love crafting in Horizons, and my fiance comes from a heavy EQ background.
If you want something you can jump in and play fast and enjoy with or without a group...
If you want a game with a smooth running engine that is pretty as well as functional..
If you want a game with all the features listed on the box and website in the game at release??
Then CoH might be for you. I wish NCsoft would throw in a 7 day free trial thing, but I bet they will at some point.
I just recently bought the game. and i am amazed. Ive been waiting for WoW but i got this game to hold me over till it comes out. CoH is such a well made game. Although there is not money there is alwasy cool stuff to do. I reccomend it.

I won't bother and try to read all 5 pages of this thread, and just post my thoughts.
CoH is very different from any other mmog out there (at least that I played, or read about) there's no real Goal to aim for (level 50 in DAoC, so you can go and RvR for example) and I think that's what's confusing most people. almost every mmog out there inflicts a massive time sink on you to reach the specific grail that mmog has to offer. CoH does.
with CoH you create a character, race through the tutorial (which is a mini story in itself, and quite entertaining the first few times) and have fun. there is no grind, because you don't have to be level x to reach CoH's grail. it's theer from day 1. sure, aiming for the powers is cool (racing to 14 with my scrapper now, because I want to test Super Jump) but ultimately it's all about having fun. The having fun part it does very well too. combat is fast and furious. faster then anything I ever encountered in an mmog while, especially at the higher levels, you still need to use quite a bit of strategy to take down foes, so it requires fast thinking and acting.
the setting is refreshingly different as well. instead of running through yet another medieval town, you'll now run/jump/fly/teleport through a city that feels very much alive. there's people and cars al over the place, and rarely do you have to go far to find a crime to prevent.
then there's the missions. to give a bit of insentive to all this villain bashing Cryptic made a load of very interesting villain groups, starting with the lowly Helions and Skulls, and going up to Outcasts, Tsoo, Crey Industries, Banished Patheon and Rikti to name but a few. each has loads of missions attached to them, who all follow a mini story. this mini story also helps you get the bigger picture about the various villain groups, and their relation with others (The Skulls are trafficing Superdine for the Outcasts, who're in turn being paid by The Family)
most of what seems wrong with CoH is more in the player then in CoH. because it seems most people just can't seem to adjust to an mmog that offers real fun from the very first minute you log on, instead of after weeks/months of leveling.
CoH is well worth the purchase - It is a very enjoyable game. I was hooked from the 1st moment I entered Paragon City in Beta. The game runs very smooth (even on dial-up - I have played on my laptop when I travel). The fighting is fast & furious.
The detail is incredible - side story (I was showing my nephew the game last weekend & he pointed at something & said "What's that?" It turned out to be a piece of trash that was blowing around on the ground. He had never seen that kind of detail in an MMO before.) It is that kind of small detail that makes the city streets & back alleys seem more realistic.
I especially agree with the posts by pabloex & Belsameth (above) & I couldn't put it any better myself.

Wrong. City of Heroes has detail and depth... is a great place to meet and hang out with friends... and is not a grind...
Does the person telling you about City of Heroes have a hero past level 20? No? You don't know? Then his opinion of CoH game content isn't worth squat. I was in the beta for months and spent a good part of that time with characters that were bumped to level 34.
Unlike some other MMORPG's, CoH content is "unlocked" as you level.
New missions, new "dungeon" layouts, themes and textures. Besides cool new outdoor zones to visit as you level, you receive indoor "instanced" missions with completely new themes. CoH newbies whine "why is my mission always in a sewer". Then they level, meet new contacts, and suddenly they are exploring "dungeons" with completely different themes, which includes different textures, different layouts, and different NPC's and props inhabiting them, and of course new mobs.
New mobs, with new behavior and new models. Another newbie whine, "All the mobs are humanoid". That's because you are new and CoH saves is coolest content for people who get a couple levels. I remember when I picked up a Circle of Thorns mission at lvl 13 expecting the same old mobs, and I was in shock when faced with a dungeon populated with stuff I had never seen before, phantasms, demonlords, look amazing, with powers and mobs behavior I had never seen in any game.
New story arcs. Those missions you are receiving? Pay attention to what your contact ("NPC quest giver") is saying and to what the mobs are saying... there is a story unfolding and once you have completed the story arc, you'll get a final mission for the story where secrets are revealed, you face a final boss, and/or retrieve the final story artifact. For folks who like a game to have a story, CoH delivers. And the stories get more complex and involved the farther you go. Including special rewards for completing an arc.
New powers. When you are low level and only have a few powers, gameplay can seem simple. When you are past level 20 and the number of powers you have has tripled, gameplay is anything but simple. There are more ways to build a character and play a character in this game then any other MMORPG out there.
Is the person telling you about City of Heroes so used to how other MMORPG's play, he can't wrap his mind around a game that breaks new ground? If you walk into CoH with expectations that it has to be like <insert favorite MMORPG here>, you will be disappointed. CoH gameplay is fresh and new. Go in with an open mind, and you'll soon be addicted.
Does the person saying City of Heroes is a "grind" bring the belief that MMORPG's are only about leveling to the game with him? I have a problem with CoH leveling; I am leveling to fast. I had to slow down because I was missing out on some low level content. Leveling is a "grind" ONLY when there is no gameplay besides leveling. In CoH, that is in no way true. Stop worrying about XP and levels. Start exploring the city, start completing all the missions and story arcs provided by your contacts. Team up with new people. Start or join a SuperGroup ("guild"). In short, have fun!

Finally I would say that if you are curious but think it may be lacking, just wait a couple months to see where they take the game and how it progresses. You don't have to be there from the beginning to still have fun and succeed. CoH handles level diversity very well which is something you don't find in other level based MMOGs.
I Closed beta tested the game, I pre ordered the game, I'm playing the game.
The above post by pabloex is on the mark concerning CoH and has my endorsement.
Well done.

i also agree with Malkavian that pabloex is on the mark.

People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
