From what they have hinted at, it is going to be an MMORPG, not an MMOFPS. Not sure about that as I haven't been checking in on it lately but go to www.stargateworlds.com for more info. They say that strategy is going to be extremely important in game, not simply getting the highest level and armor and weapon and pounding on others. How you use terrain, teamwork and strategy is what is going to keep people alive.
It's obvious it'll be standard point and click. Stargate caters to older viewers and older gamers. We don't, by and large, like first person shooters. You kiddies can have em. If they went FPS this game would bomb.
It could be like Star Wars Galaxies did with the you have to at least aim somewhat. I used to play the Stargate Mod for BF1942 and kicked ass with the staff weapon even though it had no aiming sights.

While it is most likely that the game will be a point and click it will differ a lot from Star Wars Galaxies. You wont be able to stand in front of each other and blast at one another with guns while your hitpoints slowly wear away. You stand in from of a gun and your gunna die real fast. Which sounds like a very good compromise between the two styles of play.

That does sound like a good compromise. SWG pissed me off that way.
Point and click just plain sucks anymore... why people still enjoy it I will never know. They lack the action of a FPS and they automaticaly turn into a skill spam session , who can spam skills in the best order fastest. How is that fun?
And you call FPS kiddie mode lol, more like the other way arround. Give it a couple more years and your coordination will get better mabe after puberty lol. j/k dont get mad lol.
Seriously tho FPS offers more action and much more combat variations/possibilitys. Like Roma Victor combat, the game overall is lacking, but the combat is fun and fresh(altho could use some changes/additions) for the most part tho it is great, and I hope Stargate goes down that path instead of the same crap that we have thousands of already...
Think about it if they do go with point and click , it will be (without a doubt) just like VG and LOTR, the same dam thing that we already have with a new look... AGAIN. Not for me thanks. I want something new and fun to keep my intrests for a bit. BREAK THE MOLD PEOPLE!!

It's intended to be an mmoRPG, not a Battlefield clone. RPG's are for the most part about the story and being a part of a world you enjoy. This is partly what is wrong with mmorpg's nowadays, all the FPS people thinking it should just be a bunch of people online killing each other. There is a reason for the distinct difference between an mmoRPG and an online FPS. Because they are two totally different gamestyles, with two very different playerbases.
Also (this is in general, and not aimed at anyone in particular), it always cracks me up when someone says they play mmo's and then spout off Counter Strike and Battlefield as their mmo game experience.

I find that funny also, i know 64 peopel on a non-dynamic server seems massive to some people but come on thats not MMO experience. But come on Stargate is an action sci-fi show, with gunfights and stuff blowing up alot of the times. It needs some action or its jsut not stargate, if you want strict RPG play star trek or something.

I agree, altho kinda hard to see what side you are on there hehe. I assume you mean that FPS as a MMO dosent have to play like a FPS single player game. It can be FPS and still be RPG just more fun in the combat area. Instead of point and click target then spam skills, you would run up and actualy swing your weapon hitting whoever is in your swords path. Skills would be knowing when to block or parrying or even dodging(actualy dodging). FPS is more of a free form type of combat . (guess thats the way to say it)
Now I am not saying make it so you can snipe folks from miles away and ruin the fun, I mean make it so the battles are more free flowing and requireing actual skill. Takes no skill to spam a ability over and over by clicking an icon... that has lost its fun after a few years now. Time for a new approach.
Also in a game like this where they use guns ALOT, seems lame to make it a point and click, would be just like SWG... and that sucks. If you are shooting then dammit you should have to be able to aim. I would not play it if every shot from my gun was guaranteed to hit my target(random misses of course), without my actualy having something to do with it... just dosent make sence.
RPG originaly came from pen and paper approach and the name role-playing was derived from the fact people were taking a role of a fictional character to get through a story. The type of rule system or even lack of it had nothing to do with the term. Somehow later, mostly as this style of play came to computers the term RPG somehow got twisted to indicate a game with character progression measured by various rule sets. The way the character was progressing, the role play, was pushed to background. So basically an RPG in current terms is something where you drive some kind of alter ego through its destiny in virtual world and this alternate character evolves using some kind of rule system. The type of controls used to accomplish this do not define whether its an RPG or not. To tell the truth, one of the best RPGs I played was Deus Ex. And on the other hand, I dont consider ie Diablo an RPG at all.
The differece between FPS and RPG is that in FPS the focus is on the shooter, with no progression and negligible story. Having to aim in RPG doesnt make it FPS, its only different approach to controls. No RPG is pure, it is simply not possible, you have to implement the interaction in some way. Having to aim just adds another factor, how well is the person able to utilise the control method, or rather makes this much more apparent, as some kind of control is there always, difference is only how big an impact it does.
I can fully understand that people that, to put it bluntly, simply lack the skill are against this type of thing. I on the other hand am looking forward to AoC where the aiming, etc will be nicely implemented and therefore skill will play bigger role, the outcome being equally affected by it and development level of character. If something similar was also in SGW, it would make me one happy gamer. But tbh I think it will be something along the lines of KOTOR.

100% agreed! Seems like people think FPS is 100% fighting only and no story, quests, crafting, community interaction or anything else.
Best example (I can think of) would be, Elder Scrolls Oblivion Online(I wish) style game, except with guns instead of a bow(and designed for Stargate). Would be the perfect FPSMMORPG. RP tho would come from playing the role of that character with other people as a crafter, merchant, adventurer, bandit, leader, lackey or whatever.(however you prefer to play)
But yeah you are prolly right, it will more than likley be like KOTR/WoW/SWG/VG/LOTR ect... game companies are stuck in that rut it would seem
Point and click for ranged combat and up close and personal control for Melee type combat / range?
That would work, but it would have to be as a sort of handicap, for new/young players and have a higher miss ratio. Or you defeat the point of having the ability to aim in the first place, since It would be giving the advantage to those that dont have to take the time to aim. And allow for windage, distance and all that.
If it was used as a handicap it would be usefull to the less coordinated and helpfull to those with lots of lag. The hit/miss ratio would have to be highly looked into to make sure that players taking the handicap dont have a advantage over those that dont use it.
This would also ween players of the need for point and click to target and keep a target for them, since if they actualy aim and are on target they will hit each time instead of randomly hiting.
And it would/could work for both ranged and up close combat if done right.
To be honest some of the arguments in these posts are absolutely rediculous. Since when are FPS games only played by kiddies?
I take offense to that personally, because I'm not the type that enjoys a Point and Click. I find the combat interesting, but at the same time I don't enjoy it as much as playing an FPS, where I feel I'm actually the person ingame in a sort of way. Its just a preferred playstyle and yes it is more exhilerating and more tiring at the same time. If you think kids are the only people who play FPS games you are strongly, strongly mistaken!
MMOFPS games are still a genre of the future, which has not quite lifted off yet. We have WWII Online, Face of Mankind, Planetside, Neocron 2.1, Roma Victor. More are comming but they are experimental and not garuanteed to be fun.
In my opinion Point and Click makes the game more open to people who like to customise a character and not be that character exactly as in feel like you are in the eyes of that character, unlike Neocron 2.1 where you actually have to go behind a wall to reload and not be shot at. That cannot be done in a point and click game. You can dodge bullets/arrows yourself in point and click, but you can rely on your character to do that.
FPS is the more action type of game where you control mostly what your character wants to do, without really much timed actions or anything.
Point and Click is a more strategic style of play, but you customise your character to fight the way you want him to fight, but you don't have total control over him.
I hope you are starting to see the difference and respect that difference. So please don't mix FPS up with the immuture community just because you don't like FPS, or are bad at FPS.
Bottom line is this game is going to be catering mostly to adult gamers since it's mostly adults that watch SG-1. And most adults don't like first person shooters (myself included).
I find it really funny how FPS advocates in this thread say point and click turns into a "skill spamfest". Really? Cause I've always been of the belief (and I cut my teeth on an FPS--Duke Nukem--that's probably older than some people in this thread) that the FPS's turned into a twitchy tweak spamfest of shooting. Oh, that's right--they are. Most people don't want to play a game where He who has the fastest computer wins (which is all the original CS was--my vid card is faster than yours so I win). Most people don't want to sit there and have to constantly be ramming button combos or commands in.
And most importantly? Most people don't want to PvP. This is why open PvP games are always smaller than PvE-centric games. And bottom line is you can only code a mob to do so much. It's going to be the same repetition, just of a different sort in an aiming type game. Only way twitchy tweak works is in PvP. If this game went open PvP? It'd tank.

Well It's not going to be catering to just adults I'd say it will be catering to Stargate fans in general , even none stargate fans. This game is going to help continue the sg-1 story line.
I would like to see it be similar to SWG when it released. Let cover and obstacles still be used tactically but keep it 3rd person with tabbed target.

Well the Devs say it's not going to be any point and aim fps type mmo ala swg nge......it's not going to be like that.
They say it's going to be a system where cover and group tactics will have to be used heavily....We can only guess from that.
I'll wait for a little more info on the combat system before I judge it fully. As I think everyone should.
