The first MMO to really captivate me was Dark Age of Camelot. I was in beta and then rolled to live. It was good because it wasn't nearly as much of a grindfest as EQ was, the lore was amazing, PvP was incredible. It will always have that special place in my heart(I can't believe I just typed that).
That being said, we shift focus to the current state of MMO's. WoW is a very solid game obviously. It appeals to casual gamers and hardcore blizzard fans all the same. I enjoyed my time in WoW. WoW is very simplistic and gets the job done. EverQuest2, on the other hand, is far more immersive and has a lot more going on. That comes with a price. It requires a bit more effort, which turns a lot of people off. I have been very lost for awhile because of this.
I believe that people who have played WoW AND EQ2 that come into this game looking at it objectively will thoroughly enjoy it. I really think it is a great middle ground between simple and complex MMO systems. There are a few gripes that can be made, but there will always be those. Class balancing, perfomance issues, etc that are going to work themselves out prior to release. But overall, this game has hooked me.
It is unfortunate that the license will hurt the game as much as help it. There will be those who won't play it thinking it is just a fluffed up WoW with Hobbits. Also many newcomers to the MMO genre(rabid Tolkien fans) will probably have a hard time accepting that the world doesn't revolve around their character.
As far as comparisons to other games.. I loathed D&D:Online. It didn't feel right at all. My experiences with Vanguard beta did give me echoes of an EverQuest type game, and I was pretty neutral with it. I did enjoy the little time I spent playing AC2, and actually never got into the original.
Bottom line... don't believe the naysayers. It seems there are far more people bashing the game than praising it. So far I am pretty impressed. And all I was looking for was something to keep me occupied until AoC, WAR, and PotBS =P

I will probably pre-order and become a founder member just due to being a huge Tolkien fan, but what worries me is the simplicity some people are mentioning. Like all members of a class being virtually the same, very little in the way of forming your own character. Can you comment on this?
Also I play and love Vanguard right now, a little buggy but getting better. What I find good is the immense and open world and as stated above lots of options for making your character unique. Also it really feels like a living world (much like EQ I agree with that statement of yours).
I liked WoW and played for 2 years, but found it a little too simple and shallow for my preference. So in gameplay terms and complexity where does Lotr stand?
