FPS is for kiddies!! Um. right, rofl. Ever heard of guy named "Fatality"? He has won a dozen world FPS tournaments and has made lots of money doing it as have other FPS players because its more of a sport that DOES REQUIRE SKILL!! To suggest FPS is for kiddies seems blatantly ignorant. Fatality was even in Time magazine and no he is not a kid. Point and Click is actually a hand held feature that requires zero skill and is ultilmately based on gear and lucky critcial hits. However, i don't play MMORPG's because they are challenging. I play them for the immersiveness the same way I would approach reading a book or watching a movie. But if a FPS combat with MMORPG elements was developed and done well I would be one happy gamer. You get the best of both worlds -- immersiveness and fun, action packed, SKILL based competition.
I think a Gears Of War type approach, but with still a kind of point and click.
For example, you'd take cover, aim for a body part of the enemy (so if you only want to disable the enemy you shoot for limbs, etc) and the hit rate is calculated, to say you would have a higher chance to miss if you aimed for the head and such, but it would be instant kill/higher damage, depending what the enemy is. A New X360 game called Crackdown uses a held accuracy system for targetting such as this, where as if you aim for longer the better accuracy you get.
A point and click that had elements of aiming via holding your aim to get more accuracy and Gears of War-like cover system would be ideal. It would still be a point and click but it would be a welcome change.
I see it as a welcome change because of the opinions I have read on this thread. People want FPS, people want good old fashioned RPG with a twist. I say we have a middleground - Usual point and click targetting, held accuracy system, and cover usage advantages.
The object of war is not to die for your country, but to make the other poor ******* die for his.

I agree that some kind of compromise should be made, and would work well.
As for whoever said, adults do not like FPS... no. and I think if you read this thread you would see that your statment of "most adults dont like FPS" has already been smashed to bits.
And once again(since you didnt read the thread) RPG dosent mean point and click. RPG means Role Playing Game. Where you Play the ROLE of a charatcer in a Fictional world. Has nothing to do with how you move and or how you attack.
Take Oblivion for example great RPG, that uses FPS style movement and combat. And they did it well. Then you got WoW MMO that was a RPG and used point and click combat, was ok for a little while. Then theirs Planetside MMO that was not a RPG (cuz you dont really roleplay you just kill)and used FPS and it was fun too, still is at times. Its all in how they make the game, if they do it well it wont matter if it is FPS or not, but if it is a shooting game(witch it is) I want to aim where I shoot.
Like MXO, MMORPG with point and click combat. I could not play this for long because it wasnt fun, interesting sure(animations), but fun no. The combat just got boreing because it was all done for you. Like the Gran Prix track at Magic Kingdom, it was cool cuz you are speeding arround the track but you cant even steer(you are on a guided rail), so it not something you are gonna really enjoy more than a few times.
I think the failure of other MMOs with FPS will probably discourage it........
Look at Risk your life. It was FPS combat and it just didnt catch on. Planteside has shared the same fate as it has never attracted more than a niche crowd. Look at what happened to SWG when they incorporated FPS aiming into the combat system people hated it. I really dont see a successful trend to base the decision off of at this point.
Maybe if AOC manages to implement the style successfully we may see other MMOs follow suit. If not I think you will see the standard tabbed target lock on and autofire systems we have seen in the more successful MMOs.
Critical thinking is a desire to seek, patience to doubt, fondness to meditate, slowness to assert, readiness to consider, carefulness to dispose and set in order; and hatred for every kind of imposture.

RYL, was not FPS that I remember. You had to target and spam skills.(could be wrong been awhile) dosent change the fact that the rest of the game was complete crap...And a scam.(win a million dollars)
Planetside was fun tho, and if you log in now you can still have that same fun... not like you can run out of stuff to do. because the PVP aspect of FPS is fun. (and stargate could have that kind of replayability too, in areas, and areas for story and quests as well.)
SWG, is not relevant here. That was a complete game that folks got used to and they snatch the rug from under their feet and expected them to be happy about landing on their a$$...
FPSRPG would be like oblivion/morrowind online... you saying oblivion/morrowind sucked? Didnt think so. So now imagine a oblivion MOD that turned it into stargate, and thats how a FPSMMORPG should be. And yeah I know they cant make stargate quite as good as oblivion looks and all(for online) , but this is just an example so you can see what it should be like.(while playing, tons of stuff to do and still FPS)
And I pray to god, that AoC does it well and is fun. Cuz all the rest I have tested, sad to say, they suck...(all were just Like... WoW x10=10 times more of a waste of time) Hoping on something different too in Pirates of the Burning Sea... but again we'll see.

Um. No. I think this proves that children don't bother to read and a couple of you who don't read so well missed where I said "by and large" most adults don't like playing FPS's. Research bears this out. The VAST majority of people who purchase FPS's are kids. The majority of people who purchase RPG's are adults. I also love how some guy tried to say because you can make money playing shooters that it wasn't largely a kiddie genre--kids have been playing games for money since the days of NES. Kids all over the world get paid for delivering newspapers--guess that doesn't make a delivery route a kiddie thing?

Oblivion wasn't an FPS. It was an RPG from a first person perspective. For the most part, you didn't move or really aim in Oblivion, you pretty much ran up to a mob, stood there and hacked away at it while it hacked away at you. Just because something puts you in first person perspective doesn't make it an FPS. FPS implies twitchy controls and having need of all sorts of reflexes. The MMO community (average age: 28) doesn't want that. We didn't grow up on it. We grew up on turn based RPG's, side scrollers, etc.

You obviously miss the point but I'm not surprised!! Professional FPS players are adults who make a living at what they do just like a professional football, baseball, hockey, etc. players do. They can make a living playing their sports because they are very SKILLED at what they do unlike pont, click, and wack mob which require zero skill. So tell me, how much money do people make living in their parent's basement playing WoW or EQ or something 24/7 and I"m not talking about the gold farmers! Assuming you mean adult = mature then because there are more adults playing RPG"s does that make it really adult when most of them are the people we refer to as kiddies in every MMORPG . Since the majority of MMORPG's players act like kiddies and most adults play MMORPG's, then most of those kiddies are actually adults. Adult age has nothing to do with maturity obviously because every time we say "this MMORPG is full of damn kiddies" those people we refer to as kiddies are actually adults acting immature so now how does that make your precious MMORPG game so adult(mature)? And yes kids play FPS just like they play MMORPGs. But what 7 year old or older can't get max level in any MMORPG? We should take MMORPGs for what they are which is all about "RPG" --story, lore, adventure, exploration, character, and hopefully a mature community regardless of age--. People who get ego boosts from playing a MMORPG must really have rock bottom self esteem and zero real life confidence. And in the future how about making better analogies when explaining your position. Your logic is this -- because there are more kids playing football than there are pro football players, pro football must be a kiddie sport. Think about that and get back to me when you learn to analyze.

Well said Sitheus, he prolly still don't get it tho lol.
Justjack, Oblivion is in First person, so yeah it can be considered a FPS ("First Person" Shooter from 1st person view) especialy if you use a bow... Witch is what I was refering to(obviously, tho not to you), since stargate is gonna be mainly a shooter(as one would imagine from the shows).
And again (since you didnt read it from earlier posts) RPG means Role Playing Game, has nothing to do with how you move or how combat is period... please learn what the abreveations mean. Players like you and those kids you are talking about, are what ruins most MMORPg's, FPS or non, for the adults because they dont know how to RP (or what it means) at all. And if you take the time to learn how (not hard at all), you will assuredly have a much better time in any MMORPG you play.
I think the failure of other MMOs with FPS will probably discourage it........

First person shooters are where you control your character's aiming/movement. You life isn't based on a number generator. Its based on your skill at combat. Many "Mature" gamers dont play FPS because they want a slower and more strategic approach to combat. FPS concentrate on fast paced or even slow based(Tom Clancy) skilled combat. Fusing the two together would just add more depth and skill to a game. Imagine playing EQ2 and instead of pressing a button to cast a spell on a target you had to aim your swings or fireballs. But at the same time you have to keep track of our groups health.
What you silly kids seem to be forgetting is that FPS-style combat doesn't exactly translate well into MMORPGs. Yes, it's fun for Oblivion, and Gears, and other FPS-or-action games. And Neocron tried it, too.
Either way, the "hack-and-slash" approach to MMOs simply sucks. And if you want a Stargate MMO, not a Stargate ACTION-ADVENTURE game, you'd better suck it up. FPS-style gameplay isn't completely possible. You wonder why Neocron is only MMO to have it, while all others stick with a form of the traditional combat. Sure, I'd love to blast people ala Gears just like everyone else, but it is NOT going to work.
Get over it. You try coding a MMO with FPS-style combat with a LARGE subscriber base. This isn't Neocron. This isn't 4-on-4 Gears. We're talking thousands of people.
I think it will involve cover and strategy, but I doubt it will have aiming. I think we will find out, which will suit the game more since sometimes either aiming or point and click won't work for some games.

You forgot planetside.
I am just sick of the WoW mold that everyone seems to want to use... as thousands of others are.
Hence the reason Vanguard and LotRO are doing so bad, we been there done that got the T-shirt, and now we want a good game. We arent gonna enjoy a fresh coat of paint any longer, it has to break the mold, soon as these companies realize that they can start making a proffit and get that WoW following they want so bad.
But untill then we will just have to let them wast hundreds of thousands of dolars on vaporware, creating a huge world that will be devoid of players. Then watch them change and update and NGE the game to death untill players are scared to play it for fear of it being changed in the middle of their experiance.
Ohh and my son is just starting to play the point and click games that you enjoy and he is only about 8 yrs younger than you, so I understand the frustration with having to actualy aim, for you "KIDS". lol
Your logic is this -- because there are more kids playing football than there are pro football players, pro football must be a kiddie sport. Think about that and get back to me when you learn to analyze.
Such an excellent analogy must not go to waste. I think in this thread when people refer to FPS's belong to the kiddies they are really saying.. "older gamers don't have the reflexes to compete"
And this is true. There's a reason why most pro football players see their careers end before their mid-30's (if not sooner). Pro football (and all other sports) are the province of the young. By time you get to 40...there's no way you can keep up with the 20 year olds...not only from a strenght position, but because your "reflexes" don't compare either.
Sure, some old timers survive..heck Tony Hawk stills skateboards, (more on his name/rep than his actual skill these days though) Heck, even in golf, the sport is ruled by the young.
Same is true with MMORPG's vs FPS... sure , there's some people in their 30's who still have their twitch reflexes, but truth is... most people never developed good twitch reflexes..and they want to remain competitive. Point and click equalizes the playing field for them...and since they vastly outnumber those who are good at FPS/Twitch targeting.... MMORPG companies use P/C instead of the FPS targeting.
That's not to say there isn't a good market for a MMOFPS out there, it can surely support at least a game or two I'm sure. But it will never be a huge marketing success in today's "older" PC gaming market.
Now, if they ever come up with good PC hardware that runs MMORPG's well that is in line with consoles (500.00 or so) then more young people will join the market....and you'll see more demand for FPS targeting..... but right now MMORPG's are dominated by the $2000.00 + PC market and the players who can afford to buy such hardware (generally older game players)
BTW...no offense, but all you folks under 30 are still just "kids" to me (yes, I'm an old codger)

Hehe, I read it all and I agree that in physical sport, for the most part, it is dominated by the younger generation. Altho dont tell Jerry Rice that. I watched him whoop up on some young uns. Pros vs Joes.
But to say that in a game your hand eye coordination slips with age, I have to say , thats wrong I have gotten better with age. I find myself getting bored(as many do) with the repetitiveness and boredome that point and click presents.
Look at a game like planetside for MMOs, Oblivion for RPG or Doom for a action FPS, in those games in the dungeons and on the feild of battle I get a much larger adreneline rush durring encounters... was just more fun.
Also if you are being surrounded and gonna die reguardless, you are still able to hit all of them or atleast able to take a chunk outta their health before you go down makes your sacrifice worth while atleast to your team. That is much harder in a point and click game, instead of just mousing over and fireing you have to target and click who you want to hit then you have to hit the right skill and wait for your skills to recharge before you can attack again...by that time you are usualy dead, if you are surrounded, and barely scratched anyone.
The main reason most people never developed FPS skills is because most FPS games are over before they start... They are short stories that you pay $50 bucks for and most RPG players are used to very long games. Oblivion and morrowind changed that and showed that FPS can be more fun than the traditional point and click style in RPG's, as long as it is done right. We are seeing more and more of the FPS style being brought into MMO's and I am glad.
As for them coming up with ways to make FPS MMO's work ... they have, once again look at planetside. Thousands of players(atleast was havent played in a bit) you could always find some action to get into, and rarly lagged that was on my old crappy rig. Most MMO players have the set up needed to play what they buy, they know what they got and they know it's limitations. Also they make these games so you can turn graphics down so it will be more playable just for that reason.
The last thing I want to say on this is, that older players demand more than younger players, thats because we seen it all already. Look at WoW been there done that and most everyone hates it now, not because it sucks but because we got tired of the same thing over and over. Now that we moved on we try all these other "NEW" MMOs like vanguard, LotRO can go on and on... but they just dont appeal to most of us as seen in the subs for these games and reading their forums. Not because the games suck.. but because it feels just like the same thing we have just left... And the game mechanics is the only thing that is really the same, the rest is a totaly different game but it "FEELS" like the same thing again. Thats where FPS is like a breath of fresh air, in a stagnant MMO world. Look at AoC that is gonna do well because they are using FPS combat (something new) even tho the rest of it will probably be just like the rest of them are, but it wont feel like it, and that makes all the difference.
But for stargate, for them to turn it into another of what is already slowly failing is just plain stupidity... mabe they will realize it before it is too late and make the nessairy changes. One can only hope.
And for what everyone hates about FPS the one shot kills, it dosent have to be that way, it can be made to be more fun and interesting. For example.
You are ducking behind a wall, someone sees you and takes aim at your head, that is just barely exposed, and sends one down range. Now that shot could one hit kill ya but since it is a game and you want it to be fun they could make it so that shot takes off more health than a body shot and also rings your bell, making your vision slightly blurry and wobbly and leaving you vulnerable and making your return fire somewhat sloppy for a bit. (mabe x ammount of time or untill you are treated by a medic or something)
FPS dosent have to be only fun for the most coordinated just depends on how they program the game.
Also the lag in FPS, would be to a minimum, mainly since they can have soo many worlds and they are all more than likley gonna be instanced. Or atleast lots of them will.
I love the idea of a action/adventure FPS game, but since its going to be a mmorpg I guess ill give it a shot. I mean come on its Stargate, I love that show!!

I love FPS games. The one shot kill only sux to the n00bz....lol. It just takes time to get use to the controls so you can see when someone sneaks up on you. I also have a great tip don't camp and you wont get one shot while hiding behind a crate or whatever.

I love em too now, hated them for the longest time but now my eyes are open. And yeah good tip, also don't run off by yourself... try to find a team and work together.
It may be a serious design challenge to attempt to incorporate both control styles and certainly it will be stirring up the crowds of gamers that subscribe to both types, but maybe it's worth a shot to come up with some ideas on how to merge both successfully.
If there's a game with a theme that would support both FPS action and Point-N-Click targeting and 3rd person exploration, Stargate Worlds certainly fits.
Stop right there. Most of you seem to think that FPS = Counter Strike. Thats not true. Most of you seem to think FPS = For kids.
When some people here say FPS, they dont mean planet side or CS style. They mean something comming close to Deux Ex or Neocron. Where your skills and levels influence damage, aiming speed, resistance, speed, jumping height, what class you are, ect...
Its like any other MMORPG really, exept you add a small aiming factor. What is so bad about it? I think that most people would actualy enjoy it. It gets the player more involved, and make him think about cover and movement.
If this is going to be a game mainly aimed towards guns and range weapons, then FPS style is a logical choice, as long as its close to an aiming system like Deux Ex or Neocron. 50% based on your levels and points, and 50% based on how you aim.
Some of you sound like somekind of MMORPG elite where FPS components is for low class FPS players.
Personaly, a FPS component adds to imersivity. You are not clicking on an enemy, you are actualy getting involved in the targeting process. I think its more challenging than just to click on a target and then press your action buttons and watch.
Additionaly, you could still be pressing on your different skills, ect, but by aiming.
As for whoever said, adults do not like FPS... no. and I think if you read this thread you would see that your statment of "most adults dont like FPS" has already been smashed to bits.
Um.
Cool...I'm a 30 year old kid! I love to play FPS's and Planetside was my all time favorite for 3+ years! As for SWG. Wanna know why SWG's combat sucked af ter the NGE? Because it wasn't a true FPS. Put your crosshairs on the target and shoot...if you moved while shooting you still hit your target because the blaster bolts went to where ever yuor target was even if it was moving. A good FPS has a psuedo ballastics physics built in. Even in Planetside there were psuedo physics. I know because I was primarily a sniper in the game. There was no instant hit in PS. The round had to travel x distance and rounds from the bolt driver would drop a bit so you did have to compensate for it - just a little. Loved the Bolt Driver...OMG I miss that game. To bad SOE hates it so much.
Also in SWG there was no LOS(line of sight) like a standard FPS. If you targeted something on the otherside of a wall you could shoot through it. You could shoot through whole hills from one side to the other. Did SOE ever get that fixed by the way? Probably not.
I think the only way to have FPS in an MMORPG(like a sci-fi one) is to let all ranged weapons, like pistols and rifles, use the mechanics and physics behind a standard FPS and when in melee then swtch to your normal click on target - lock. Someday there is going to be a smart designer and they'll create a sci-fi MMORPG based loosely on FireFly! Use FPS for ranged and click and lock for melee. Now...I dunno if any of you are FireFly fans but a game like that would definately rock don't you think?
If you're interested here is some Planetside vid capture I did about 1 1/2 years ago.
Oh yea...any of you ever want to take me on in BF2...you let me know. I'll snipe your arse in Jalalabad any time you like. Pretty good with the PKM...the PKM makes a great 3 burst semi-auto sniper rifle! LMAO!

I think thats the best it can be explained.

But at the same time you have to keep track of our groups health.
well you never know what there gonna do, we can only wait and see it guess
Ohh and my son is just starting to play the point and click games that you enjoy and he is only about 8 yrs younger than you, so I understand the frustration with having to actualy aim, for you "KIDS". lol

I see much potential for both.

Anyways, just my two cents.
