Which should I buy: WoW or DDO?

WoW has proven itself a good game simply by sheer number of players. It is a well made game and I have messed around on my friends' characters before and overall had a pretty fun time. It got boring after 4 hours of straight playing though and there's lots of travel involved, which isn't a bad thing unless you're playing alone.

Now for DDO: I play D&D twice a week. I love Neverwinter Nights and pretty much anything based on D&D I have ever played. I'm downloading the 10 day trial right now. It's cheaper than WoW if I buy a year subscription and looks amazingly fun, but has yet to prove itself to me. This may be because I haven't played it yet. This download has 5 more hours on it and I don't want to wait that long to receive input. I couldn't go to WoW or DDO forums for advice because everything would be biased

I have been playing MMOs for 4 years, so I'm not new to the whole concept of them, if this affects your advice in any way. Money isn't an issue. As for the type of player I am, I enjoy community and having fun with friends more than being the best. I do, however, enjoy PVP. DDO seems very group based which is a good thing and I absolutely loathe grinding, so DDO gets points there too.

As a sidenote, I'll be more likely to listen to posts rather than the polls, due to the fact that I want people to make a choice while factoring in the game's overall kickass-ness as well as with my personal preferences.

If you've enjoyed previous MMORPGs, you may find World of Warcraft a tad simplistic, then again, that might be true for Dungeons and Dragons Online: Stormwind. Fact is, they both have decent free trials easy to get your hands on. Try them, and you'll save yourself a bunch of trouble, even if it takes five hours.

Well, personally, I don't like either game, but If I had to choose one of them I would have to pick WoW over DDO.

I'm a current subsriber to EQ2 and FFXI.

Now keep in mind I haven't played DDO since shortly after it's comercial release.  I was a paid subscriber to Asheron's Call 2 and as a reward for being a loyal player I got free time with DDO when it first came out.  I have no idea how the game has changed from this point.  I find DDO to be way too much like Guildwars.  In that respect there isn't anything to explore.  You're based in a town, and everything goes from there.  The entire game is instanced except for the city.  With that aside, I thouht that the overall experience with presentation of the dungeons was really well done.  Kudos on the DM voice while you are adventuring in a dungeon.  Graphics are really nice too.  But when it comes down to it, the game doesn't offer anything else apart from the questing.  But, I haven't played it in a looooong time, so this could have changed by now.

I've played 1 WoW character to level 60 and then I tried leveling another.  I quit when I got it to level 17 and never looked back.  WoW's quest system is way to generic for my tastes.  There is no presentation of storyline anywhere.  Go kill 10 of these and bring me back 10 of these, rinse and repeat.  WoW's draw for many is it's ease of play.  It doesn't take very long to get anywhere in the game.  Level cap is but a mere 1 month away.   The graphics are really nice and it doesn't tax out your system to run it smoothly.  The lag has been getting better, or at least it was from the time I started to the time I quit.   WoW is a game that you can log in and play for 30mins and actually ackomplish something.

You said something about grinding, and in my opinion EVERY MMORPG grinds.  It's impossible to make a game without it.  What it all comes down to, is how fast it is to get to level cap and then get bored of everything.  DDO only has the D&D levels and as a result takes a billion years to level.  WoW's levels are fast and come pretty quickly.   If you are looking to get to level cap the fastest, WoW is your game.

I could keep going on the bad points of both games but I think I will stop here, with just some of the basic pros and cons of both and leave it to the rest.  I'm not a WoW fan, but at the end of the day, it's a better game than DDO.

May I suggest Guild Wars Nightfall.  Its a really great game, and it has a variety of PvP play.  I know you said money isn't an issue, but there is no fees for online play.  Lastly there is pretty much no grind at all in this game.  You can if you want to get certain items/loot whatever, but it is not the point of the game.  The community is helpful, and you can probably find a cool guild to help you out.  If you've been playing MMOs for years I wouldn't go with either of the two listed, because they are pretty much the same as every other MMO.  Guild Wars is a very unique MMO experience.  ArenaNet also tries to keep things fresh with lots of events, and fun things to do.  We just finished the Year of the Pig event in Guild Wars Factions.

Ultimately, you will make a decision I just thought I'd throw out this game for you to check out too.  Heck if money isn't an issue pick it up, and play it for a while its ony $50 investment instead of $50 + sub fees and not enjoying the game.

Thanks for your replies. They were all very helpful.  When I talked about hating grinding, I didn't mean I was unwilling to do it. You don't play MMOs for four years if you aren't willing to grind. It just seems that DDO is much more quest based than pull, kill, rinse, repeat. When I play a game, I play it only when I have a lot of free time. You won't ever see me get on for only 30 mins. If I'm going to get on I want to make sure it's at least for 2 hours.

I might try out Guild Wars, but I have a friend who played it once and he said it's horrible.

If anyone has played DDO recently and can give me some input, it would help. I haven't talked to anyone who plays it yet.

By the way the current games I play are: FFXI and Tibia. I'm about to make an account on MapleStory just to mess around on til summer when I have the time and money for playing more than casually.

I did not vote in your poll because I have never played WOW, so I can't comment on it.

I have played DDO in alpha/beta, along with my husband who is a long time D&D player (15-20 yrs).   We were both extremely disappointed, and never bothered to buy the game.   If you love D&D, you will most likely not like DDO due the fact that it really isn't much like D&D.  NWN does a great job of incorporating D&D classes and rulesets.  I wish the developers of DDO had done the same, or at least come close.  Don't get me wrong, there are some good things about the game, but the bad far outweighs the good in my opinion.

The biggest problem for me was the lack of content.   Within 2-3 weeks I had completed every quest there was and had nothing left to do but rinse and repeat, and I am a casual player.  I played maybe 2-4 hours a day, and not even every day.  The really hardcore players could do it all in less than a week.   Sure some of the quests were amazing and really well designed, but after doing it 15 times even a great quest gets old.  Now, they have supposedly added more content since release, but I doubt its enough.

Anyway, that's my two cents.  Take it for what it's worth.

I say you should either buy WoW or NwN2.

You alreaady played WOW and got bored after 4 hours. You are downloading the DDO trial, try that out. Also download WOW and give it to a certain level if you didnt absolutely love DDO after trying it. Really , make up your own mind man. Thats what the trials are for. * million people like and play WOW, and then some absolutely hate it. Very few people play DDO, but then some love it.

Try it for yourself....I sure as hell dont know what taste in games you have  .

Just because it has more players then any other game doesn't necessarily mean it's a good game.If i had to choose i'd go with DDO thought. I got bored with WoW after about an hr....

A large number of players indicates that WoW is a popular game but don't think that this means it's a good game. And, don't think there is a miracle waiting to happen in WoW as long as you play enough because there ain't. Some of the worst products you ever saw are popular and used by millions of people even though you know they completely suck, right? Well, if you found WoW to be boring after four hours what do you imagine happens in the fifth hour of play? Or, after one hundred hours? My answer, based on many more hours than that, is nothing---absolutely nothing. It's boring and never gets better. It can be fun at times because the game is uncomplicated which helps players to do things spontaneously. But, the boring aspects of WoW are everywhere so the fun doesn't last long. And, after a year of playing WoW 83% of players will suffer irreversible brain damage. Be careful.

PM me if you are interested in a GW trial. I do believe I have a trial key somewhere ...

Note: I play GW since April 2004... you should try it to make a good choice.

Hate to say I told you so

If you are fan of D&D (as i am)

    I say boycott DDO

They should not get any subs from D&D fans , after what they did to D&D MMO licence.

LOL, you are just asking for a slanging match between WOW fans and DDO fans.

At the end of the day it's personnal preferance but, DDO is based around group play and almost no solo content, WOW you can solo up to max level and group if you want to. That makes WOW more flexible in terms of how you play it, and one of the reasons why it's very popular.

  • shane910shane910 Member Posts: 359

Honestly, unless you just want to be dissapointed and have less money to boot, I would wait until a good MMORPG comes out...  VG sucks and LOTR sucks (both are WoWx10=bigger but really just 10 times the waste of time) but mabe just mabe AoC can pull a rabbit out the hat.

Only thing good about DDO was the combat, beyond that it was crap.  WoW was fun at first but after about lvl30, you realize that its not getting any better and the timesinks are getting worse, then all you can do is wish you had that time back.(or push on to 60 like I did, so you know for sure it was a waste of time...)

But a free trial never hurts, so use em and lose em.

Contrary to what Solkin said, DDO takes much less time to level cap than WoW, but that's not really the issue here.

In my opinion, based on what you said you're looking for and my experience with both, I would say DDO is most definently your game out of those two.

On another note, Darkfall will have the best PvP, social interaction, exploration and economy dynamics of any game out there come release.

Please, explain this moronic logic as to how a game with only 10k players is a better game with million something players.

Wait a minute. DDO has fans?

DDO is adding more solo content. Not to mention, on the official page someone wrote a strategy as to how a person solo the game.

Very simple. The game was NOT fun for that person. I don't like WoW as I didn't like the gameplay. I don't care that it has millions of people. DDO was and is more fun to "me" than playing WoW. We all have different opinions of what a good game is.

I thought the person made perfect sense.

Not only did you NOT  answer my questions, but YOU DON'T SPEAK for him/her. I asked him/her  to explain how a game with more players than any other MMORPG is not a good game. You were FAR from answering the question and DDO had nothing to do with what I asked. For example, if I didn't like soccer, but it doesn't mean it isn't a good sport.

Well I gave my opinion, if that burns your britches then so be it. I mentioned DDO because that is what the topic was about, that or WoW.

I say what I always say, get your hands on a trial account and make an informed decision after the trial runs out. Every time I bought an mmo without playing a trial 1st, I typically got burned. Not all the time, just most of the time.

Having said that I'd go with WoW over DDO. Heh, see my post on page 8 of the "Absolute Worste MMO Experience" for my opinion on DDO. But again, make your own decision. I'm pretty much in agreement with the other D&D pen and paper poster on this thread. If you're an avid D&D'er, then DDO might really frustrate you...but who knows.

WoW is good for some easy, casual gameplay. I'm old, I need my sleep, I need to be up to go to work in the mornings. I just can't game like I used to (at least until I retire ) so WoW to me is a fun game to play where I have tons to do, I can see the fruits of my game time displayed proudly on my character through the nice shiny gear she has, and I can do it all at a casual pace. When Age of Conan comes out I'll probably be more hardcore about things...but for the moment WoW is a nice game to play when I get bored of playing other things.

Thanks for all of your input. Please don't turn this thread into a flame war though. My DDO finished downloading but I'm having proxy trouble and have more time to burn while I wait on a tech support forum to help me out. It seems like the popular vote is for WoW, but WoW is seeming more boring and easy every time I play it =/ The PVP is great though.

    I still can't decide...
