Well Im a bit biased. I think its the best WW2 game out there bar none, I have been playing it for over 2 years and it still holds my interest. But you do need a joystick to fly or drive a tank.

I've been playing WWIIOL for nearly 3 years now and I can very honestly say it's a good game. It is very challenging and not the easiest game to play. It's full PvP and you really must train in each Avatar to achieve any regular success. But if you're into WWII I cannot recommend this game enough.

There is no way we can actually fully describe WWIIOL. Not only is it too big in many respects to try to describe each persons observation of it will be different. Again, this is primarily due to size. Get the game, play it, form your own opinion. Thats the best thing you can do. If you dont have the money to try it right now, wait till a promo comes up again. They come up now and then.

When your in, be sure to keep at it. Youll probably be frustrated at first. The learning curve is very steep. Get with a unit (mine ops on channel 15 as axis) and they will help you greatly. Youll see what I mean when you get in the game.

Sorry if this didnt give you what you wanted, but its the best thing to do in my opinion.

There is indeed no simple way to describe WWII Online apart from maybe:

The one thing I can say, is this game almost requires you to work with others. This game is a rare beast in that you really need to become part of a squad. Unfortunately the game UI does not force this yet (but it will in the not too distant future). If I can give one recommendation, find some guys you enjoy playing with in there and join their squad. Even if only temporarily. Most good Squads offer training, which in this game is invaluable due to the very tough learning process. If you're uncomfortable joining a Squad, visit the webiste in my sig. Our website offers a lot of Publicly available Training aids, hints and reconnaisance (there's much more that is not publicly available). It'll help to get you started.  ;)

This link is a little outdated, in that teh world is much bigger now, but it should give you an idea to the sheer size of this game.  ;)

Okay first off I have only been playing the game for about 3 weeks now so take this with a grain of salt.  I love the game and I hope more people will come to love it.  They (Cornered Rat) built a truly HUGE world for us players to scamper about it (more about this later).  The variety of units you can play is nice and not too daunting...the control's and the level of proficiency required is however.

I am fairly uncoordinated so I gave the air war a miss (got shot down the first time and crashed the second) and the sheer number of keyboard commands for the naval battle meant that was a no go as well.  This leaves Tanks, ATG's, AA, and the beloved Infantry.  If you are a planetside/high speed FPS player then this will leave you wondering where all the enemies are.  I still play planetside and it is a vast difference.  In PS everyone zergs to the shooting and rushes blindly in guns-a-blazin.  In WWII online this is a sure ticket to death.  There is no plinking a tank to death or running through a firefight trusting your armor will save you.  This is truly a thinking mans wargame/shooter.  Think of what you would do in a real life situation...see a tank?  Would you rush it in real life?  Then dont do it here...tankers LOVE to use their mg's to mow down noobs like me.  Also balistics pretty much work...aim up to fire farther, lead your target and all that.

On the negative side, the graphics are...dated.  Not bad and the addition of the new tree's makes spotting those infantry even harder (trust me I have wandered into more rifle barrels than I want to admit to).  The sheer size of the game coupled with the fairly small number of players means finding a fight can sometimes be quiet hard.  This includes the fact that you almost have to have some form of transport to get you near a fight so you dont spend 30 minutes running only to get nailed just as you come into sight of the town.

The reliance on the joystick is somewhat disapointing but after an initial adaption period it starts to get easier.  That being said I still highly recommend multi crewing vehicles...its a lot easier than switching from position to position trying to do it all yourself (and what the heck does the 5 guy in a tank do? no gun, no sight...just sits there?)  Also the keymapping function is a bit scary at first (for someone used to minimal thinking, maxiumum action games like me) but exploring it and the offline tutorial (free with download!) is well worth the effort.

Sorry for the long post and I hope this answered some of your questions.  Say hi if you see me in game ( degen ) LT and ALMOST Captain (where I can get the much desired binoc's)

Glad to hear you're enjoying it, Drakolus! I've been playing since it's release 3 years ago and I still make stupid mistakes when I get too brave. lol... Don't be afraid to ask the other players around you for help if you need it. Most players are willing to help. And try to start working with others as much as you can. I can't recommend joining a squad enough. It makes a HUGE difference to how the game is played and how successful you can be.  ;)

I had joined a squad for a while (7th panzer) but they were usually not on when I was on.  I have wierd hours since I am a shift worker and my time zone is GMT+6.  I have put in an app for 31st wrecking crew but have heard nothing back yet.  I have been working with who ever I can find and that usually works out pretty well.  Its still hard to get over my "Rambo Roots" from planetside :)

Oh and the absolute BEST thing about this game so far?  I havent heard L3wt D3wd or Suxxxor ONCE!  And I have only seen the phrase "Pwnage" once!  After the 13-something's in Star Wars Galaxies, this is refreshing to see at least a bit of maturity.  I will be soldiering on in about 10 hours, gotta go home and get some sleep after a 12 hour mid.

If you don't hear from the squads you're attempting to enlist with, Drakolus, check out the squad in my sig (just click on it). We have guys on at all different times, though we are predominantly a Prime-time U.S. squad, we have members who play all morning, day & night. lol...

In any case, glad to hear you're enjoying it.  :)

If you want to try out a squad don't join it immediately. Just tune their GHC assigned channel and play with them for a bit. If they are the squad that suits you then apply for membership;) My squad's (91st)channel is 55, check us out we are having great fun during euro prime time. 1LB's (Pruitt's squad) channel is 11. We're both squads that operate usually in the southern section of the map (we both belong to 12th armee) so depending on the sector you want to play the most you might want to search for various other squads. 31st is also usually operating south but I can't remember which armee they belong too (probably either 12th or 4th armee).

Most of the time, if someone uses l33t then it's just to be funny. No one actually thinks that way (except me, but I can articulate myself out of most situations).

  • DrakolusDrakolus Member UncommonPosts: 134

I have switched over to the allies lately.  During the last campaign they looked like they could use the help.  Been having fun playing around with the French gear (can't aim worth crap with the brit stuff).  As far as L33t goes...I know people in WWII online use it as a joke...but try some of the other games like planetside or star wars galaxies...there really are people that dumb, and LOTS of them.  Im gonna stop now since that last remark might get me flamed but send me a .m in game if you want to work together.  I hop all over the area's so I dont mind movin to hang out with a squad.
