COH... Worth $50?

2 highly anticipated MMORPGs were released today. One of them being Lineage 2, which has the most grinding leveling up Ive ever played. The other game released was COH, from what Ive seen this game doesnt really look like my type but everyone Ive heard talking about it hasnt had a bad thing too say. My usual type of game I play is is fantasy, would you people out there reccomend this game to me?

I really do not think CoH is worth 20 dollars for that matter..

L2 however, after level 15, is a great game

I personally think that CoH is worth $50 and I also will be happy to pay the monthly fees.  I guess it just depends on taste,  there are people who have problems with CoH but for me it is great fun.   I love the fighting, love tha character customisation, love the socialising and RP and love the fact I don't have to worry about loot.

Depends what you look for in a MMORPG

  • LotariousLotarious Member Posts: 85

yup all a matter of tastes.

I won't say CoH is perfect, it is a little too much of a level fest for me. On the other had it's been tons of fun. I figure even if I only play for 6 mo, I'll have had a bunch of fun and been well worth the money spent.

L2 on the other hand I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

well for me Coh and l2 are not worth the money.

I got EVERY single MMORPG in my bookcase and these 2 will not be added to my collection not for now anyways. i was in beta for both games and to me they lack to much. my 2 weeks was enough to satify my taste.

for now im going anarchy online. not the greatest but pretty fun game, quite a few people and its got DEPTH. ending my 7 day trial in 2 days and i will stick with the game.

l2 has no customization - 500 elf silver rangers running around all identical.

coh has no end game/economy - im selling my double wammy infutions.

put them together and you might have a decent game.

l2 > coh but niether worth the money.

I am having a blast in CoH. I tried L2 and did not like it.

You want to see what folks think go over to the ratings section on this board and read all the comments. The main thing they all have in common is the 3 letter word FUN.

Totally amazing, I have not had this much fun in a game in a long time

CoH is fun. I wasn't really looking forward to playing it, but after I beta tested it I have fallen in love. I liked the very first character I made, and had fun from the very first moments (from design, to tutorial, to leveling...). Then I made another character (fully expecting to go back to my first character), and I had even more fun. Then I decided to try out a class I didn't think I would like, and I had even more fun.

I hadn't planned on buying a new game until DE, or EQ2 or WoW came out, but I think I will pick up CoH at the end of the week. I don't see playing it for years like I did with EQ, but I can see playing it for months, which will make it cheaper in the long run than any single player game I have played.

To put it simply, CoH = fun

People who like Lineage2 will hate Coh, and people hate Lineage2 will like CoH. So it's hard to argue which is a better game since it's different playing style. I would say that CoH is worth playing for about 3 months max. As for Lineage2, depends on your dedication, and duration of repetative. I personally think that those 2 games are decent, not good or great. CoH is lacking items and equipments, Heroes vs villians. Lineage2 is lacking charactor creation, charactor devalopment, interesting skills, items and equipment. CoH control is very good compare to Lineage2 stiff mouse-click control. Lineage2 might have some eguipments but it's not enough. Everyone look all the same. Lineage2=Castle Siege of the Clones. CoH=too many Heroes and no villien. I could go on and on about how bad Lineage2 is and how lack of contents CoH needs, but there're too many post about this topic.

Lineage is crap, CoH is nice to look at but currently bottom line is it's just super hero hack-n-slash, thats all there is endless boring hack-n-slash maybe after the "expansion" (read "features that should have been part of game to make it complete in the first place") City of Villans it'll be worth playing but now... no. Better stuff on the horizon, worth waiting for

Not really, COH reminds me of AO withouth the content. The quests are basically like AO missions, you run in half empty mazes and bash ennemies with zero interaction with the environment.  Levelling is not that exciting because all you do is bash higher level thugs. The quest are not really involving, it' usually click on an item and bash thugs.

The Superhero them adds a little fun for a while, but if you played a game like Freedom Froce it's not that fresh and FF was much more fun.

no, very bland game.. imo , not worth 50 dollars

  • MordithMordith Member UncommonPosts: 210

I think CoH is worth the money.  Will it keep me playing n 3 months?  I really have no idea.  Only time will tell.

L2 was just not my cup of tea.

  • SaranthSaranth Member UncommonPosts: 269

I played both in beta and I bought CoH. L2 was too much of a grind to get to the good stuff. CoH is a lot of fun for me right now. I enjoy the role playing aspect of it.

However, when GW or WoW comes out I will probably be going to one of those.

Can someone tell me why I feel like I have to jump from game to game. I am driving my friends crazy. They won't follow me to games anymore. Hehe, but they did follow to CoH.

I wouldn't say that I am a hardcore MMORPGer, but I have played DAOC for about a year and have played around with EQ, Lineage, and I've seen SWG...

COH is the first MMORPG that has me really excited... It is much more fast paced, is really fun to get into, has a huge, interesting environment set in a modern day city with lots of interesting enemies 9a breath of fresh air compared to the MMORPGs I've tried where you're stuck walking for 10 minutes, or camping, or hunting a bloody baby wolf over and over...

COH is repetitive in that you are constantly fighting villains, stopping crimes, and taking missions, but the gameplay, action, and the coolness of powers makes the actual fights alot more fun... Every player looks totally unique and is their own unique customized character.  There is no camping (Missions occur in pocket mission zones).  It emphasizes skills rather than loot.  You can form a supergroup with other players, and the sidekick feature means that any player can team up with any other player...

Sidekicks take on their mentors level-equivalence (in terms of damage and defense)  as well as scaling to the equivalent conning of their mentor as long as they are within a certain range of their mentor... If their mentor is defeated, the sidekick is immediately reverted to their lower level...  this means that players of different levels can effectively team up but this doesnt lead to exploits.

A year from now, the first expansion, City of Villains is coming out where PVP will be implemented on a concensual basis...

All in all, this is the most fun I've had in any game I've played in a long time, let alone any MMORPG... DAOC was fun, but I didn't like the camping and grinding apsect of it... COH is fast paced, fun, and has cool customizable graphics for my avatar...

    And you can *fly*... :)

-" Levelling is not that exciting because all you do is bash higher level thugs. The quest are not really involving, it' usually click on an item and bash thugs."

Like any otther game is any different. What do you expect. Every game I have played that has levels is pretty much the same exact thing. You fight tougher oponents to get more exp to move foward. Same goes for questing. You have fed ex quest, kill so many quests ect. Like there is really much room for improvement here.

CoH is not a bad game. It could be better, but the way I understand it, they are going to be adding content fairly regular. They are thinking on adding a re-speccer to respec your powers, new zones and soon the ability to PvP.

From what I have seen it is not a chore to find groups as pretty much everyone is willing to group or help out with your quests. Trust me, quests get pretty tough the higher in level you go. I am sure this game will have its place in the genre, but it will not top the big boys by any stretch.

I think the character customisation screen on CoH alone is worth $50 (which isnt much). From now on no game should be allowed to get away with bad character customisation.
As an aside i think the game is well worth the money because the game itself isnt that bad, i dont think it is going to have staying power unless the next few updates bring something more to it, but it will be a good game to play for a few months at least.

    Muahahahahahahaha

3 stars sucks :( i want my 5 stars back!

I went to CoH from ShadowBane and Horizons.

I don't regret a single bit of going.  I ahve been having a blast in the game.  And the biggest selling points to me are:

    * An engine that runs smooth and fast even on mediocre hardware.

    * A game in which all advertised features are actually in and working at release.

    * Easy to get started and not days of killing Maggots/beetles/bees/butterflies" to start fighting more worthy opponents.

    * Not "loot", which I thought I wouldn't like. but what does drop are character enhancements you can use, etc...

    * Possibly the most customizable character creation process i've ever seen. Took me an hour just to design my first toon because of the number of options.

I was lucky I bought the pre-order for $10 and got the 3 day head start to eval the game, I was open and eager to get the retail version as soon as available.  ALso in my neck of the woods you get the price of the pre-order off your retail copy to it's less of a cost hit.

I never thought I'd play CoH till a friend of mine pointed it out to me and I got into beta with a presell.

I think what has attracted me to the game is it's simplicity.  There isn't endless hours searching for the perfect weapon for your level, camping for loot, selling a bunch of useless crap stored in your inventory, or waiting for a group.

For me what made the game is finding a team.  I used to solo quite a lot in previous mmo's but this game has changed my outlook and given me a new fun factor.   Soloing is quite doable in CoH but it gets boring fast.  I am able to find a team in 5 minutes or less and get on with the killings or missions.

Most of the people I meet work well together and if we don't I leave the team and find another.

CoH is great. Lineage 2 on the other hand, is one of the worst games I've ever played

There's no doubt that City of Heroes is a fantastic accomplishment.  True, there are a number of naysayers, but it seems that every game in this genre polarizes someone.  I don't know of a single major title that doesn't have someone screaming about how it's the worst game yet.

But is City of Heroes worth $50?  Well, that's a subjective question so let me give you specific answer (specific to me)...no.

I played in beta and had an extensive conversation about my misgivings re: CoH on the staff boards.  The main reason I soured on CoH was that it got repetitive rather quickly.  It was all missions to kill bad guys or running around looking for packs of bad guys.  I snuck into a high level zone and ran down the street only to see gangs of 3-4 level 38 bad guys mugging a lady.  The only difference between that and Atlas Park was the level of the thugs.  It was very discouraging to think that in 25 more levels I'd still be patrolling the city streets, breaking up small gangs of hoodlums.

As I fought in the streets of Paragon City, I noticed that there was very little challenge from the different creatures.  Clockworks would melee you while a Tesla Knight shocked you from a distance.  Cadavers would vomit on you while Reapers would fire on you from a distance.  Hellions would punch you while a Fallen Buckshot would shoot at you from a distance.  In the sewers, it was the same, only the group was larger (12 baddies instead of 4).  It got to where I was wishing for a macro function for my combat (Punch, Stonefist, Punch, Stone Hammer).

I erased the game from my hard drive before my beta period was up.

This is not to say that CoH is a bad game.  In fact, I think it is probably the most complete game I've ever tested (meaning ready to go at launch).  And while I was playing, I had a blast.  It is a lot of fun.  However, I don't really see it like a classical MMORPG.  It plays more to me like MMOG-lite.  Kind of like a MMOG version of Diablo or even a FPS.  Although I never got higher than 12, I foresaw getting bored rather quickly.

One thing I liked about CoH was the flexibility of my character.  Where most MMOGs force you to choose a class and stick with it, CoH allows you to add different skills at your discretion.  You can't do everything, but there is enough customization as to where your hero, once he reaches the pinnacle of his career, will be unique.  Also, the character creation module is a stroke of genius.  I had as much fun looking at other players' creations as I did making my own!

As I said at the beginning, this is a subjective question.  Those who might want a fast paced game with some leveling and a lot of combat will find CoH to be great fun.  Those who want more depth are likely to be disappointed.

Soloing is feasible until about level 10.  At that point, the missions become far too difficult for a solo player (at least in my experience), leaving him to fight opponents in the street.  I think Cryptic should have made it easier for people to solo, especially given the rapid nature of the game.  That way a person who has 30 minutes to kill can hop on and have a good time without having to waste time searching for a group.  The whole solo vs group issue is an overarching one for the entire genre, but a superhero game is just perfect for the solo player.  It's a shame this one doesn't encourage the single player.
