Having had a game concept up for close to a week now, and receiving good remarks thus far from the mmorpg.com, I'm looking for a bit more feedback, before seriously pushing beyond the conceptual development phase of the project.
Of course the gaming communities views and opinions are important in the design and creation of mmorpg, as all developers have their own vision and opinion on how the game looks and feels, they appeal needs to feature the communities wants and needs. As such I'd like people to follow this link to mmorpg.com's own developer's corner and check out Fires of Athelen.
It's due to go into development soon, with websites and domains soon to be purchased and developed, as well as various forums and features for the gaming community to keep in touch with it's progress as well as take a innovative hand in its development.

He also needs more people to vote in his poll.
So, please go vote.
1) Classes suck
2) Levels suck
Other than that it looked ok.

umm i like the ideas
except the whole classes and levels thing
make it so that you start off as a blank slate and you have a certain number of skills you can aquire (which can be ANYTHING) or build upon.
also make sure you make the economy player driven and very very open
make everytihng destructable, towns, cities, empires
and allow for a criminal/bounty system
i kinda started to get on a roll with sudgestions sorry
good luck with the game
yeah just breeezed it, but class and level progression?
Any variation thereof has been done repeatedly before.
More freedom, more sandbox, more player generated content.

What I listen to
There purpose of feedback, is to collect positive and negative comments so we can objectively analysis the content. If everyone said it was amazing we'd not be able to break it down and improve on it.
There is alot more development content current tabled that we've not posted as yet, that we're saving for the official development cycle, things that should have been done ages ago and haven't been immersion content, skill development paths and some more neat ideas.
As for the format, considering the current influx of mmorpg's their is very little that hasn't already been done, and market analysis shows us that class/level orientated games following genre trends is the most marketable. Yes I know it may not be what certain areas of the community are looking for but when you consider the millions of dollars of money one has to pile into a serious mmorpg development project obviously those of us whom are investing want to see a return.
Fires of Athelen does intend on delivering more Sandbox implemented tools than the current generation of mmorpg's we feel a mixture of the old trend and traditional classics and development of a new player driven community based game is the next step. It's a matter of balance.
We're working on that balance right now, as with the quest system we have refined a number of traditional working mmorpg concepts to give us the next generation approach. The guild fortresses in the frontiers for example, are extra to the gaming community and offer a more player driven faction based environment, whilst the pure game content features cities etc, are part of the traditional faction based pvp/rvr status that has proven to work. We're not totally re-inventing the wheel so to speak, but we are adding some new treds, and alloys
More to come in regards to the features mentioned above.

Then you definatly lost me right here.
It's obvious that you are creating a game "for your investment group" and NOT the potential subscriber. You have to ask, who will be playing and how long would you like them to play? The problem with todays games is every developer before you has been either making the game for, or adjusting it to, what market analysis suggests will be successful. Don't get me wrong, I understand the realities, the investment and commitment not just by individuals, but of many people.
It's not how you should look at it though, Level progression vrs Skills is not a choice your investors should make for you. They are not the designers.
Also consider the competition, you have WoW, Vanguard, LOTR, D&D already quest level progression, with others in cycle as well.
If you ask me, the market is ripe for change. Just my opinion...

What I listen to
LOL if you think ANY game company is thinking of its players when they are making it then you are waaaaay blind. These games are only made to make them money, these companies see how much they could possibly rake in so they want part of it.
