I could not recommend Vanguard. I bought it and played for about 2 weeks before giving up. I have a midrange PC (3.2GHz P4, 2GB RAM and a GF 7800GS) and I couldn't get it to run reasonably even on lowest settings. But even if I had got it to run, I was not very impressed. The character models look quite nice, but the world is very bland - it feels quite empty and doesn't have much character. I did like the diplomacy subgame, but it was very easy and not enough to keep me. I didn't see any roleplaying at all, even though I played on the roleplay prefered server.
The only other thing I am playing right now is Lord of the Rings Online, but that is still in closed beta, so you may have trouble getting in. It is very impressive, but is definitely a 'casual' game that you don't need hours at a time to play effectively (I don't know whether this is a pro or a con for you).
Thank you for the specs on what you are using; it's helped me to change my mind about getting Vanguard, as I just recently purchased a 3.0 ghz Intel Celeron D processor, 2 GB ram, with a Geforce 7300 GT card installed, and that's a bit under what you're running, so I can safely say Vanguard is not for me. I'm playing on a nvidia 6600, 2gb oldish ram, ide hard-disk & plain AMD3200 processor (not fx or dual core or anything newer) of course I have things set lower and I've made a couple of vgclient.ini tweaks but the game is perfectly playable on this machine till vista & dx10 settles down a bit and I want to upgrade hardware.
You can either take the raw power approach and bulldoze through the 8km draw distances or you can do a little tuning and make it run on much lesser gear taking a few minutes to set it up a little better.
Don't be told you can't run it on your current rig by people. Whether you can accept turning down some options on a engine supposed to scale upto hardware to come for several years or not is a whole different issue.
Lack of PvP focus Lack of PVP in Vanguard?????? um... there are servers dedicated to FFA (free for all) PVP and servers dedicated to Team PVP.
I am just in love with LotRO right now, for many reasons, basically the graphics apeal to me, the lore, the setting, the PvP, ok...so...let me get this straight. There's PVP in LOTR??? since when? I dont remember them putting in evil races. How can you have good vs evil pvp without evil races??
first you say that Vanguard has no pvp then you say LOTR HAS pvp...I think you may have gotten the 2 confused...
You should learn to read then I guess, where in my post did I state that Vanguard has no PvP? I am talking about Vanguard not having a focus to PvP, there is no reason to PvP other then to get some kind of joy out killing someone more then likely defenceless against you. And LOTR has PvP I suggest you read up on it, it is extremely interesting.
But yeah I think your the one greatly confused here

Sorry Terminus-Est - wasn't really having ago at you - but with all the negativitly for this game for no real reason except that SOE is attached to it, and obviously the "cool-ness" factor on these boards people seem to think they have for bashing VG, it just p!ss's me off.
Your post was proberly a little insulting, and some of your views are wrong about why people do not like Vanguard. The poster is free to express what games he likes and what games he does not like as much as he wants don't try to make out like he is doing something wrong.
I have been playing VSoH and LotRO over the past weeks, I have come to my conclusion what I will do in the near future (unsubscribe from VSoH and pre-order LotRO for those who would like to know) and I stand by my decision. As good of a game VSoH is, it has many flaws and I have many personal problems with the game... and no it has absolutely nothing to do with SOE, if I held grudges against companys, I wouldn't be touching LotRO that's for sure.
My main problems with Vanguard are:
The world is not seamless as was promised
Explain in more detail?
Performance issues
Agreed - it isn't the best. And definately not as good as WoW with regards to graphics
The amount of bugs in the game that have been there since before closed beta
Again, which bugs - no-one here really seems to give any details to these bugs - i know they exist [bugged quests, invisible mobs and glitches which require you to restart - group chat not working, or simply not being able to join a group as it states your already in one] - but what else, as these really arn't ground breaking and certainly do not happen 50% plus of the time.
Some of the classes don't seem to be as polished as others
Explain more if you have the time. Cleric / Pally / Shaman / Necro / Ranger seem pretty good. Rogues certainly need help - but again, WoW has gone through numerous balance tweaking and Blizzard seems to get no attention due to this.
The graphics in general are sometimes extremely bland, poorly coloured and/or glitchy
Agreed - but again, a) this is a matter of taste and b) this can be said about most if not every game on the market.
Corpse/tombstone runs I would like never to be reintroduced to a new mmo ever again
This was pretty much explained before the game was released, so why gripe about a feature in a game which was already well documented.
The game is far from 3rd gen/next gen
What is 3rd gen exactly? How does a game be a 3rd gen title? What's the scope here?
Lack of PvP focus
Might be wrong, but i believed that the game was designed as a PvE first and PvP was more of an after-thought.
There were alot of things I loved, but the flaws just far outweighed them....
I am just in love with LotRO right now, for many reasons, basically the graphics apeal to me, the lore, the setting, the PvP, the quests, the fact I never feel like I am doing a job rather than playing a game (because after all if I wanted to work in my spare time, I would go work and get paid for it, not the other way around), everything in LotRO apeals to me and I am really glad that I feel I have found myself the perfect mmo...
Exactly the game obviously wasn't created with your gaming needs in mind. It appears that LotRO is a game which has been created for the market which your needs are placed.
All things in this world get positive and negative responses and yes there are many bias/stupid/rediculous opinions on this website, I wouldn't recommend this website for decent opinions at all, Guild Wars near the top of the ranks??? There are many people on this website however I respect, so don't get me wrong....
Yes, but lets at least have some discussion about the issues. Just saying "X game is rubbish" doesn't really help. And lets be honest the post i replied to stated that they weren't able to play the game [ even though their spec was actually ok, and alot better than others that i personally know, and i certain can see that others that play on the web and have ok performance with worse specs - simply by reading a few forums other than this one ] yet was able to base an opinion on the game in it's entirety. Surely the correct "review" would of been: "Well due to some technicalities i wasn't actually able to play the game, so there-fore i have no opinion on the actual game, but found it frustrating that my machine wasn't able to play it - either due to the actual software or something on my machine". ?
Next time you post though, try and leave out the smartass attitude if you want to be taken seriously and want to promote the game you enjoy the most.....
Actually, i'm not trying to promote it. In this post, i actually tried to get the OP to try WoW and EQ2 first. What i'm trying to get across is a) the hate for this game is pathetic and b) people are unwilling to attempt to put in any details to their reviews.
You stated "but with all the negativitly for this game for no real reason except that SOE is attached to it" and I was mainly replying to that, because it is a very false statement.
The game wasn't created for all my needs in mind, I agree
Seamless world? yeah that is why in some areas of the game I hit an invisible wall that seems to load then my character drops a small height from the sky..... then I can proceed to move on pass this "loading wall" as I call it lol
Yeah the tombstone thing was announced, but I wasn't going to let a corpse run ruin the game for me, the bugs etc done that job well which just made the corpse run alot more worse then it should have been.
IMO a next gen game should at least add something new to the table
Diciple is a great example of an unpolished/undecided class
Ok I know Vanguard got released early, but still, it really does not apeal to me, I don't see how a game with no PvP focus, bugged to all hell, grindy, no innovation can be apealing at all. Just my opinions. Alot of people agree with me so there is no need to go further into the discussion.

Baerf, your responses are weak when someone that isn't lazy enough to post an in-depth review slams you in the ass. You see, reading a wall of text doesn't appeal to alot of people ( This is america and the age of laziness - erm, sorry, technology ), so one paragraph reviews from soneone expressing their feelings for a game is enough. Don't attack someone and criticize them for not being as descriptive as you'd like, only to post a "thank you" when someone actually does bother to post a descriptive review, making you look like a fucking idiot.

Good day.
Actually no it's a web site and it's visited by many people from many different counties.
But I do agree we've gotten a lot more lazy, due to the use of technology.
IMHO Vanguard is a good game, I'm enjoying it, I've only seen the disappearing mob bug (easy to fix by moving), and had a couple of complete crashes since release (not sure what causes them but most seem to be related to long play sessions).
Can't really say much about playablity as it runs great on my set-up but then it should considering
well...thanks for the comments guys...but after looking around abit more at websites and forums I think I'd rather play EQ2 than Vanguard for now...Vanguard just seems to have too many bugs and for me it's not really acceptable for such level of graphics and animation in Vanguard to require such a high spec PC (well i understand it's a seamless world but still). EQ2 seems to be alot more polished (since it's already an established game) and frankly speaking Vanguard's characters seem to have only slightly better texture mapping to them. I don't understand why they can't do better about texture mapping because if you look at GW the characters look alot better than Vanguard's because of good texture mapping rather than having more polygons (again this is just what i've observed i'm not really an expert in 3d modelling so i might be wrong).
Well now my question is if i play EQ2 how long do you think the game will last since it's quite an "old" game before players start abandoning it for other newer games. Also what do you think are the system requirements for Age of Conan...do you think it'll be higher requirements than Vanguard? I'm asking this because I'll be getting a new PC soon and will like to be able to play AoC.

Except if you had even read any of the posts i had made, all i was asking for a detailed post. Maybe you look for arguments on internet forums, but i stated what i wanted to state and some poeple actually took the time and effort to post their experiences. What else could i say except "thank you"?
And you know what? Personally i could hardly care less if people like yourself on an internet MMORPG forum believes i'm a idiot.
I guess you do though right? I mean you won't of posted that comment if you didn't.

EQ2 still has a long life in it - EQ1 is still around and fairly popular. Good choice, it's a good game with decent content and a great DEV team. VG certainly has a way to go in those respects imo.
