MMORPGs with Monk styled classes?

EffectEffect Member UncommonPosts: 949
Curious as to what other MMORPGs have decent monk styled classes. The only ones I can really think of are EQ1 and EQ2 and to a degree SWG but that was before the NGE, not sure how it is now since it seemed to be folded into the Smuggler profession (trying now).

Any other games? New or old?

Thanks.

Vanguard has the "Monk" class, as well as a Monk-Healer Hybrid called a "Disciple".

I'm assuming that by monk, you mean a pseudomystical hand-to-hand fighter. There are monks in Guild Wars, but they're basically your archetypal priest of light-themed buffer/healer.

Aside from EQ2, FFXI has monks. That's the only other remotely modern MMORPG I can think of which has them. Out of the two, I'd probably just play EQ2. FFXI has nice visuals and a great setting for lovers of the Final Fantasy series, but I found the pacing and gameplay to be underwhelming. EQ2 is probably a step down in terms of art quality, but it really does offer a whole lot more in terms of content and gameplay.

Also, I see FFXI as a bit of a veteran's game with an unstable economy, and it demands a lot of time. EQ2, to my surprise, has turned out to be a very newbie-friendly game, both economically and in terms of gameplay. I think that's part of the reason why it has a decent mix of casual and hardcore players. There's something there for both.

    Just my two cents.

I am very disappointed with all the monks in mmos.  They really lack the "Ass Kicking" power that they should have.  The weak combat animations is probably the cause of this.  I think the game to finally achieve that sorta ass kick factor is Ragnarok Online with its skill chain-linking Monks.  Pow triple trifecta; Wosh Quadruple blow; bam that other attack; and finish it off with asura attack with asian characters coming across the screen.  Now thats how a monk should be.  Pure ass kicker in a pacifist nice guy sorta way.  I think Shinmue might get it right although its set in modern time.

The only game that had a monk class that was actually 100% kickass was Horizons.  You were rarely hit due to a high level of agility/evasion and when you weren't being swatted at you could really cause some massive damage without the use of weapons.

Ragnarok Online has monks just right in my oppinion. Masters of combo's.  Its just a shame it takes so long to actually get to the monk class.
