Dreamlords: Dev Journal: The Dumbest Quest

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Jon Selin from Dreamlords returns with another Developer Journal. This time, he tells us all about The Dumbest Quest in the World.

The Dumbest Quest in the World exists. And more disturbingly, for a brief moment it existed in our game.
The other day I was watching one of our designers exerting all his piss and vinegar as he was working on a new quest for Dreamlords. Then he shook is head, turned to me with a sad look on his face, and asked: "What do you think when we create utter crap for your game?"

I didn't know what to say at the time, and to be honest I don't even remember what my answer was. Given the question, it is more likely than not that my retort was a pun of questionable character.

A few days later, I was glaring at the true meaning behind his question. The Dumbest Quest in the World. Behind closed doors we call it "The Gay Quest", and no, it's not about gay bashing, the quest is actually about interracial homosexual relations, but it doesn't stop there... Oh well, I better explain it from the top.

You can read the whole article here.

Cheers,
Jon Wood

I have done that quest and felt the same way. It truly is a quest that makes one wonder why it was set up that way and why it is there. Some game have bad quests but I feel this game truly is a game where finding a good one is hard. Love the game but not the quests.

very cool article and I dig when people wear their hearts on their sleeves. I really want to like Dreamlords too as I am a big total war fan but something, that I cannot put my finger on, is stopping me...I guess my biggest fear is i will like it too much and quit all the other games i am playing. Going to read the reviews to see if it will tempt me in.

Maybe he split into three because he didn't count on all of him surviving the trip over to his lost love?

That was a good article.  Actually made me laugh and smile numerous times.  That guy has crazy ass hair too.

I liked that article although I'm pretty surprised that he was willing to publish it on here. If that was my game I wouldn't want any potential customers finding out that my team would even think of making a quest like that

It's nice that he can laugh at his own game. It helps me not feel so bad, since I've been laughing at it from the beginning.

Quite the contrary, this type of honesty and openess from a Dev is refreshing and speaks volumes about his confidence in his product which hopefully bodes well for the future of the industry.

Yea, when you look at it that way I guess you're right. That sort of openness does kind of make the gap between gamer and developer seem smaller which is nice.

It could definitely damage some relationships internally though.  He's throwing one of his designers under the bus.  Of course, that designer actually does deserve to be fired.

I don't understand why they would remove such a quest.  It sounds hilarious, and I think quests with lots of crazy people are the best.  I think quests should either make you feel important or entertain you.  I would find that really, really entertaining.

I doubt the quest was intentionally designed that way. It was probably some unfinished project or sandbox-type experiment that somehow got into the game and left in that weird-ass state it was in. Still, an amusing article.

The best would have been if the little guy went up gave the monster a big smoocher and off they went

This kind of article really makes me love this site - very funny.  As soon as I get home I'll have both of my sons read it.  Sometimes you really do wonder about quality control in quest creation; this is a perfect example.  Alpha Male - lololol!

Well, the article did get me to actually notice Dreamlords even existed...but a quick search of the early reviews have warned me off of it....

It's not for everyone, but I can't remember reading it ever claming to be either. In other words, don't worry yourself with beta reviews. Dreamlords is one of those games so different from the mainstream that you'd be better off making up your own mind instead of listening to someone on a MMORPG site, who might not care at all for it's unusual breed of web-strategy/rts/rpg gameplay. :)

I'm not going to contradict myself (too much) by sharing my own experience at it, but I'd like to say that if I wasn't behind a pesky, college firewall I would definetly be participating in it past the one era I was lucky enough to play as a beta tester. There's a satisfying depth to it both gameplaywise and especially communityspecific which feed off eachother and can make it just as addictive as classics like Starcraft or Utopia.

Too bad you need to buy the game to "try it out."

Yeah, that whole $5 activation fee plus 14.95 for the first month will really break your bank. They had a beta, then they released it, god forbid they don't open a free trial automatically.

Killer game if it's what you enjoy, utter crap if it's not. Definately a love it or hate it scenario, thankfully there are quite a few who, like me, love it :)

Lack of free trial is bad and it is not worth 20$ to find out if its a bad game or not. Beta has nothing to do with trials, thats just a testing phase (even though some companies have started to use it like a trial phase).

Conclusion: those who like it are friendly as hell. I hope The DL community stays this way.

Name a recent successful MMO that had a free trial upon release. Coming up with anything? That's cause there aren't any. WoW, EQ2, EVE, GW all these games didnt begin their free trials until *at least* 4-6 months after release.

well i felt that this game was not for the quests, although it does add content i don't think it is content worth a dang. I am not sure if the game would be better with or without them.

I didnt say free trial on release, I said its bad to not have any (looking at Dreamlords site there is no mention at all of free trial). All those mmorpg:s you mention would have more players (at start if anything) if they started with a free trial early. (GW still has no real trial, like all NCSoft games the free trial cd-key is given in the game-box & on certain weekends). Free trials bring in new blood & Dreamlords seems to have very few players.

I just can't believe the guy had the Dreamlords logo tattooed on his wrist.  That's almost as bad as putting your girlfriend's name there.
