Why is WOW ranked lower then the others yet it is much more popular?
Thats kinda weird.

Because WoW is popular amongst younger folks and people getting their first MMORPG, about 80 percent of them probably dont know this site exists and thus are in no position to vote.

no, it is not kinda weird, think about it!
1) these lists are made by people that frequent this site, the same people that somehow managed to give EVE online the "best PvE" game of the year... this year.
2) it is all based on what votes you give the game, 1 and 10s are usually discarded by the mods after a while, but the rest stays.
3) the greater the number of votes, the more average the vote will become, considering there are people voting high and low. So, Vanguard was number one for a few days because it had very few votes (like 46), as the number of votes rises, the average inevitably lowers (one vote 9, second vote 3, average is 6. add another 3, average is 5 and so on, the more votes, the more the average will equalize)
4) WoW has lots of haters, especially on this site. the motivations of such haters are too many to discuss here.
5) let's compare numbers: Guildwars Nightfall. Average 8.3 493 votes
Everquest 2. Average 8.3 3998 votes
WoW. Average 8.2 7513 votes
WoW has almost double the votes of EQ2. it is a miracle it is that high

No. Not at all. The people playing has nothing to do with it's scoring. WoW isn't a game that belongs in the top 3. Because it just exists other games which are more groundbreaking that deserves theese spots. I can fully understand EVE and Guild Wars. And Ryzom. So if WoW should be anywhere near the top it should be about position 4 or 5 from the top.
You'd only be a fanboy if you ran around thinking WoW is the best because it's the most popular. To me it isn't even THAT much popular, maby it WAS the first year but now I can start seeing it tipping over more and more when the next gen of MMORPG's are shown.
Too many think there's too little of quality out on the MMORPG part today and only play WoW "until something better comes up". So there we have it.

I think 'fair rating' has something to do with it also, there are lots of people just giving a 0, if they could they'd give it a -10 offcourse there are people that give 10 and if they could they give it a 20. Most people don't rate fairly they rate the 'extreme' it's either a 0 or a 10 there's nothing inbetween.
Surely there are people that rate a game fairly but i don't think they weigh up to the 'unfair rating group' WoW has alot of lovers/haters.
And offcourse this will happen to any game, since WoW has become so 'public' i think you can go on the streets and ask people if they ever heard of WoW u get possibly 9 out of 10 people saying 'yes' while if you ask people if they know/ever heard off V:SoH, EQ2, EVE or L2 they are wondering wth you are talking about.
There's also that group that rate a game by 10 minutes 'gaming
And this not just happens here, it happens everywhere IMDB is a good example also.
The scores doesn't really matter though, it's mostly based on either haters or fanboys, most of the comments aren't even honest opinions. Theres plenty of "this game sucks" or "crap" comments and not really explaining why its sucks for them. Also, theres those that have done EVERYTHING a game has to offer only to realize at this point that the game isn't for them.

well it looks to be that nobody is voting for the game then i guess. The rating system is based on our votes so its nothing to go by
