I was reading and reading and reading all the opinions about VSoH on here...trying to decide whether or not I should buy it.
Loads of people saying it was buggy etc...
In the end i managed to get a beta key for LotRO and so I'm enjoying that at the moment...and hopefully, when the beta of that ends, the patches for VSoH may have moved on a pace.
not sure what the op was talking about , but im happy you are having fun, in the end after all the flames or after all the fanboys , YOU having fun is what counts,
Its refreshing to see a positive post about this game, personally im having a great time playing it at the moment. I like the way they have made the crafting system like a combat system. I am one of the old EQ1 fans, and after playing a myriad of MMO's since i left that, VG has alot of the elements i like so much about EQ1. Its also nice to see that the people i have spoken to in game so far have been very friendly. I hope that sticks also.
Dunno if you guys relised but I am fairly sure the OP is being sarcastic hence the "science experiment" part of the post.
So considering this thread has no point other then to make Vanbois praise and the haters flame, let us all dance to the Tunak Tunak Tun and watch Batman on Drugs - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBsxqQIu_5s

I was quite looking foreward to games other than VG. BUt in a moment of sheer boredom I got the beta 5 download and started playing. I quickly became a VG fan. Nobody who plays MMOs should ever expect a perfect bug free game. It just doesnt happen. That aside, the bugs in VG are small and are not game breakers. As I write this they are patching with a fix for the occasional crash to desktop. The game runs great on my modest system and is alot of fun. This game isnt for everyone, especially those that require instant gratification. But if you like to adventure in a big world with lots to do, and you like to plan your actions, then VG may be for you.
I have to admit that comment about trees made me smile to. But I am tired of your endless hate for a game that I love. And of the accusations, I have full confidence for Brad and his team, they are not trying to cheat anyone. The world is much more complex, financial issues is just impossible to look past for game developers. Not saying that releasing half finished products is a good thing and I think that if they could have waited another couple of months with the launch they would have gotten a lot more players and less negative comments. But the game is good and fully playable in its current state as well.
Of course it's buggy, it's in what we who have been through a lot of launches call "Beta 6". There are kinks they can only work out with the public playing. Seeing as how there has never been a project near as ambitious as this, it's understandable that people don't quite get why there are how many there are.
I say let the naysayers say what they will, we'll just continue to have fun while improving the game. BTW, if you're on Florendyl, send Kraenak a tell and we'll group.
appaerantly, VG is a VERY buggy game, as well as a direct World of Warcraft clone, like many others are trying to do atm (warhammer online, LoTR Online, ...). in VG this is more than obvious, the playstyle, the UI, the classes and races. it's can't be more of a ripoff than it is now.
besides that, VG dares to call itself 'a next generation mmorpg', but it doesn't even work in Windows Vista. Players with Nvidia cards can't even boot the game on Vista, while ATI players (with relatively better drivers stability for VG) also get constant crashing, FPS reductions and soforth.
VG is basicly the MMORPG version of Gothic III: Bad, incomplete, pre-released, a launched (alpha) beta.
You also have to make sure you have this top line PC to even be able to run it on a descent detail.
on medium or low the game looks 45x worse than Rappelz Online, which is not a good thing ...

I am still playing and i will continue to play it. At least until the first art update. But there are some very annoying things ingame. Its not fully playable. Its enjoyable but far from fully playable. As shaman the joy of having a wolf as companion when exploring the vast continents turns daily a bit more into annoyance. The wolf gets lost at every chunk and in the corners of a chunk it can happen a lot within 30 meters. Nothing gamebreaking but i loose the dog since 15 days 20 times an evening. The dog is class defining and while horses work through chunks the dog doesnt. So my class is not fully playable.

Wow is a friggin clone of the first Gen MMO's, but i do agree that VG is far from being anything innovative. besides that, VG dares to call itself 'a next generation mmorpg', but it doesn't even work in Windows Vista. Players with Nvidia cards can't even boot the game on Vista, while ATI players (with relatively better drivers stability for VG) also get constant crashing, FPS reductions and soforth. Umm I play it in Vista, and so does a friend. I get on average 25-60 fps, 25 being in towns. Im on a amd 3200, 2g 2.5 latency ram, and a 7900 GS Vid Card, VG is basicly the MMORPG version of Gothic III: Bad, incomplete, pre-released, a launched (alpha) beta. GOTHIC III is the defenition of a lame game. Vanguard is slightly better IMO. You also have to make sure you have this top line PC to even be able to run it on a descent detail. My pc is far from top of the line. AMD Sempron 3200, 2g ram, 7900GS 256mb and it runs fine on medium or low the game looks 45x worse than Rappelz Online, which is not a good thing ... I agree there is nothing I personally see that is great about the GFX or why it demands such high system reqs. And for those that would flame me on this comment, yes i have turned the game to Max settings to see what it looks like. It has bland grafics / artwork. but hey, everyone does what they want right?
appaerantly, VG is a VERY buggy game, actually, no - the quantity of bugs is comparable to most other MMO's and improving daily. Don't confuse bugs with client performance. as well as a direct World of Warcraft clone, like many others are trying to do atm (warhammer online, LoTR Online, ...). in VG this is more than obvious, the playstyle, the UI, the classes and races. it's can't be more of a ripoff than it is now. again, no, that is untrue - it could be said that VG is an EQ clone in many ways, with elements of WoW & DAoC. In my opinion, LotRO is the closest thing to a WoW clone (although they pull from all MMO's), but Warhammer and AoC will not be clones. Wow is a friggin clone of the first Gen MMO's, but i do agree that VG is far from being anything innovative. I would consider VG an evolution not an innovation, taking their MMO in the direction EQ was headed before the genre was derailed by WoW. And WoW is not a clone, it is a merger between MMO's and Diablo II. It's not immersive to me, but it is still well made and a blast to play for a few months. besides that, VG dares to call itself 'a next generation mmorpg', but it doesn't even work in Windows Vista. I suspect this has more to do with the development cycle. When Sigil started on VG, Vista was prolly still being called Longhorn or whatever. Sigil openly admits that VG was released early and they take responsibility for that - hopefully they will extend the trial period though. But if you had had the opportunity to read Tolkien's Lord of the Rings while it was being written would you have complained about it being incomplete... ? GOTHIC III is the defenition of a lame game. Vanguard is slightly better IMO. I would take that a step further - for the mass MMO crowd, VG is head & shoulders above crap like Gothic. For its target hardcore audience, VG has the potential to reach Epic status. You also have to make sure you have this top line PC to even be able to run it on a descent detail. My pc is far from top of the line. AMD Sempron 3200, 2g ram, 7900GS 256mb and it runs fine My pc is P4 2.8ghz, 7600GT, 1gb ram - fps is acceptable at balanced settings and should be much better with another 1gb ram. And I love the fact that it will look even better on the new machine I will undoubtedly be buying next year. This lesson was well-learned from EQ. on medium or low the game looks 45x worse than Rappelz Online, which is not a good thing ... I agree there is nothing I personally see that is great about the GFX or why it demands such high system reqs. And for those that would flame me on this comment, yes i have turned the game to Max settings to see what it looks like. It has bland grafics / artwork. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You may prefer a more anime style or cartoony feel like other MMO's - I'm sure many do. For me, the art direction from Keith Parkinson fits perfectly with the attempt to make this game as immersive as possible. You say bland, I say realistic (in a fantasy sort of way). This allows things like spell effects and epic encounters to have much more impact visually. In WoW for example, the environment is so colorful and outlandish that anything a player does pales in comparison. Plenty of eye candy, sure - but no immersion. but hey, everyone does what they want right? Of course they do. And it sounds like the two of you do not fall within the target audience, like many others here looking for a new game. May I suggest to you to watch Warhammer and AoC and if you can't wait give LotRO a chance. It is much more stable and colorful than VG. Or go back to the The Burning Crusade for awhile, there is enough content left there to fill a few months. Meanwhile, some of us have found a home in VG and hope to be settling in for a few years - and we don't mind visitors so stop by if you get bored with the mainstream.
besides that, VG dares to call itself 'a next generation mmorpg', but it doesn't even work in Windows Vista. Players with Nvidia cards can't even boot the game on Vista...
This is a completely untrue statement. Vanguard runs fantastic on Vista with the proper hardware. I play Vanguard on Vista every night and I run an NVidia card. The performance is fantastic on Vista - much better than my XP machine...

Took five posts.
I did buy the game, and I am playing, but it had absolutely nothing to do with these boards. I got it as a preorder and I'm enjoying it. Not playing as much as I would like because my x1300 just doesn't have the muscle for the quality I like when in a game, but that will change in a few days I hope.
I really just wanted to see how many people would flame a simple post stating someone is enjoying the game. And of course I got the same responces from the same people.
Thank you for putting a VG thread with a good title on the home page though.
appaerantly, VG is a VERY buggy game, as well as a direct World of Warcraft clone, like many others are trying to do atm (warhammer online, LoTR Online, ...). in VG this is more than obvious, the playstyle, the UI, the classes and races. it's can't be more of a ripoff than it is now.
Yeah, and Blizzard never got any of there ideas from anyone else. Maybe you should go see when warhammer and W40k where created and you might see where Blizzard got all there ideas/art from.
Glad you didnt let the SoE flamers get you down, I went through something similar a week ago. I didnt know anything about vanguard at all, but I really wanted to try a new mmorpg, so I picked it up despite all the flames, and I'm enjoying it too.
I've been playing a week now and the only bugs I can think of are the way fellowships are disabled and sometimes npcs walk backwards if they are in the distance. I get lag spikes every few hours too when the world turns from daytime to nighttime.
Remembering some of the other mmorpg launches I've experienced, I think I can these couple glitches.
Rather than glitches there must be some sort of compatibility issues with certian hardware. My hardware is running VG absolutely fine though so its good for me .

/agree. LoTR Online is barrowing heavily from WoW, but I think its still a good game. Warhammer online isnt barrowing from WoW much at all from what I've seen, and remembering the past of warcraft we have to remind ourselves that Blizzard took many of the warcraft ideas directly from warhammer. VG isnt copying WoW at all really, save some of the controls.
Like holding left click lets you rotate around your character, holding right click controls your character, holding both moves you forward. There are a few little things like that from WoW that I hope every mmorpg uses becuase it just works great. The other thing that I would say VG copies from WoW is the great quest system, where quests crop up that help introduce you to new quests by sending you to higher level areas, keeping you with a full quest log to help you level. WoWs whole questing system was a good step forward in mmorpgs and theres no question as to why other mmorpgs are doing the same now. If a mmorpg released now without a proper quest system I wouldnt play it and neither would most.
So I suppose I'm saying that VG barrows from WoW where it should and where most mmorpgs do, but certainly doesnt copy WoW. If anything I would relate the classes, races and cities more to EQ or EQII, especially the races, but the classes are all pretty unique so even between VG and EQ there arent a ton of parrells.
Then you have stuff like Diplomacy, VGs new crafting system, VGs mount system, all which can barely be compared to a previous game (especially diplomacy, but the others are very different too)... Its because of these new interesting things that I am really enjoying VG, as well as the long draw distance that allows us to see mountains and such in the far far distance- Mountains that I have never explored- Mountains that are beautiful and I want to explore... I also like the strengths/weakness thing in combat, it adds another level of strategy for groups during combat, very cool, and all the different mounts, and the way you dont have to hold all your crafting/diplomacy/harvesting/mount riding equiptment in yur inventory while youre adventuring is very nice too.
All ways good to be entertained by an entertainment product.

DragonJim, be realistic ok? this game is far below the bug standards for a released game. Take Granado Espada, it is now in a closed beta phase and is already more polished than VG in many aspects.
Second, graphics in the beholders eye. By that i understand some people can live with the quality they get from their graphic settings. what i am talking about is the fact that it requires a beast of a machine to run at good playable framerates, but at what advantage? have you ever played Trackmania Sunrise maxed out? that games runs just perfectly on a standard machine these days and looks about 14 times better than VG on the highest setting.
You have to be honest, do you know where all that machine power goes to in terms of graphics? if it were to use SAA or MAA. But look at the bland textures, the very low res and ugly vegetation. Farcry, so very old, but looks absolutely amazing. The VG engine has to be one of the worst MMO engines out there.
When i see the minimum and recommended specs i expect to see lovely things like creatively used pixel shading, HDR, bumpmapping. If you want to, post me a screenshot, i'd be appreciated .
About being a clone, i am sorry, but i stick to that point. VG is a complete ripoff of World of Warcraft (something i must not have mentioned, i do not play WoW myself, so leave out the fanboy arguement, should you be thinking of that).
I don't know how you fail to (wanting to) see that. If you make me a screenshot i'll make a comparison screenshot with WoW
About the 'people do what they want', i don't know how you can flame me on that. That was by all means not meant sarcastic, and how does that NOT include me? I am expressing my personal disappointment in VG. Where is that wrong? Also, i am also not obligated to be 'open-minded' to games i forsee a bad future far, being LoTR online.
which brings me to something you say 'if you read the LoTR while tolkien was still writing it, you wouldn't say it's unfinished'
yes, i will say it's unfinished, since it just is incomplete objectively seen, this also goes for VG
What you are suggesting is that fans will not complain. People who love Tolkien stories won't complain no, while 'dislikers' will do the opposite. Wether i like the game or not is of no relevance concerning the completeness of VG
I'm glad, and I'm having fun too. I really tend to take my time and soak in the atmosphere of a game. Probably why I like Vanguard so much. Try your hand at crafting and diplomacy too! Dark elves get a horse when they reach 50 diplomacy so all 3 spheres are really rewarding.

Fine, so get your ass in game now and start reporting bugs. Maybe the game would be playable six months from now and we all can join you then.
