I'm Confused Between LotR:A Journey To Middle-Earth And LotR OL ....

Hi I'm Really New Here ....

And I Got This Big Question About A Game I Saw In One Of The PC-Game Cafes Here In My Place (Philippines) ....

I Have Played RF OnLine That Day,When I Saw Five Person Beside My Row Playing "Lord of the Rings:A Journey To Middle-Earth" (Actually Not Sure Of The Title,But It Was Lord Of The Rings) ....

The Game Was Really Great,It Was A Strategy RPG,If You Guys Know Warcrat I-IV, Demoncraft, And Starcrat I-II, You Would Really Know ....

The Gameplay Is Similar, But One Thing That Outstand The Lotr:A Journey To Middle-Earth Is That The Gameplay Graphics Is More Vivid, Clear, Vibrant, And Way More Better Than The Three Strategy RPG I Mentioned ....

The Structures Of Every Races, Are Simply Detailed To Match The Ones We Saw On The Trilogy Movies ....

I Wouldn't Say The Game Was A Rip-Off, It Would Be Better To Say That The Game Is Similar To The Other Three ....

You Will Be Creating Armies, Upgrading Things, Constructing Buildings, Warfare Against Other Races, And So Much More ....

It Was Really Great, And I Was Even Thinking To Ask Where I Could Buy A Copy/CD Of It ....

However, I Was Really Confused About Lotr:A Journey To Middle-Earth And LotR OL ....

My Question ....

Is Lord of the Rings OnLine Exactly The Same As What I Describe The Other LotR Game I Mentioned And Describe .... !?!?

If Ever, Please Help Me Find Their Sites, 'Coz Honestly I'm A Fan Of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord Of The Ring Trilogy Novel/Book, And The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy Movie ....

And Now That It Even Come Up With A Game, Well This Is Even More For A Fanatic ....

The game you are probably referring to is "The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth 2".  That's a realtime strategy game produced and published by EA, released about one year ago.

The game people here are talking about is "The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar", which is a MMORPG developed by Turbine and published by Midway, Codemasters, and some Asian firm whose name I don't remember.  It will be released in a few months.

There's no connection between the two titles, aside from a common IP.

Lord Of The Rings Online: Shadows Of Angmar is a MMORPG similar to World of Warcraft.

You control one character and level up by killing monsters and completing quests (putting it VERY simple).

You can find more about it here.

    Hope this helps.

Another point, one that has been confusing LOTRO fanbois for a while.

Battle for Middle Earth, and various console slasher types, are distributed by a company called Electronic Arts (EA). They bought the video game rights for the movies. So yes, if you look, you can easily see that various elements from any game they make is pretty close to Peter Jackson's movies.

This is where things get weird.

Years and years ago, JRR Tolkien was strapped for cash and sold the movie rights. Giving rise to the hilarious rotoscoped version (if you haven't seen it, you should look it up, its that bad) and eventually Peter Jackson's live action Lord of the Rings Triology. EA owns the video game rights to the latter and basically nothing else.

Meanwhile, the company (Tolkien Enterprises LTD I think) that now manages the book rights sold a license to make an MMORPG to Sierra/Vivendi software in like 1998 (maybe it was just Sierra at that point). Before the movies were released. Sierra started working on a game, something happened and it got no where apparently. Then they started working on Middle Earth Online, which basically got to the point of having some races and some classes on the website from what I remember. Once again I think the game stalled. At any rate, Vivendi apparently brought Turbine in to codevelop but eventually ended up selling them the license outright. Again, the book license.

So to sum up, Battle for Middle Earth and basically anything with the EA logo on it has to follow the movies to some degree because thats all they have rights to. If they tried to make a "The Hobbit" game right now, Tolkien Enterprises could sue them. Turbine meanwhile, can make an MMORPG from the source material of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. For example though, if they made the Nazgul's helmet look like the one from the movies, EA could sue Turbine. They basically can't copy anything from the movies without licensing it from EA.

The legal gyrations are unclear but I don't think EA is allowed to make an MMORPG from their movie license... Not sure about that though.

Actually, EA eventually signed an additional deal with Tolkien Enterprises and worked with them on the series.  I believe the events of The Battle for Middle Earth 2 focus on the conflicts in the Northern part of Middle Earth, something which is barely mentioned in the movies.
