The land is so lifeless and boring...

level 28 walking around all over going miles and miles without seeing another form of life, no little bunny wabbit, no birds, nothing. The land  for a mmorpg that is supposed to be HUGE is pretty lifeless besides little of the players i see running around and the npcs who are just signpost with heads.

i have yet to see a critter walking around the wilds of vanguard besides the stationary ones at some of the noob and racial towns like with rindol fields.

Granted, it's been a few months since I played VG and it was in beta then, but it's not just the lack of "critters".

There's something sterile about the game world, as beautiful as it is.  There's a lack of ambience in the wilderness.  There are huge gaps of land with no mobs, npcs, etc.  Mobs only stay in their "camps" like other older MMOs so they don't give the illusion of being creatures in the world...that's fine except that it's not congruent to your expectation of the world that is so large and realistic.

For example, near HZ I think it is...a few chunks over near the horse track...   There's 2 camps of NPC mobs nearby, and then further away there's a camp of scorpions (IIRC).  There's a pretty large gap between all three of these camps with NOTHING in between.  No wildlife, no ambience, no life period.  Just ridiculously large tracks of monotonous land.

Anyway, that's from memory so things may have changed since then but then again maybe not.

Well one thing i must agree on....went into a major city .... and no quests or anything ... I couldnt be wrong and I sure didnt look long enough as i got very very lost ... but I saw all the standard city stuff but no quests .... I eventually ran into some diplomacy quests and they were interesting but that was it...

Anyone know more about New Targonor?

I know i should be asking this elsewhere ... this place is nothing but a giant flame war ... every forum board on this website.

Nope, not to the level of WoW and UO that is. Occasionally you might see some non-aggro antelope or some crap as with the Lomshir Plains, but that's also the only thing. And it isn't exactly a critter since it's as strong as the magic wielding bandits and super bees around.

90% of the time if anything exists, it's meant to be killed by some Missive or Quest. That's why the world is so devoid in a lot of areas far removed from any quest NPCs or missive tasks. The seas are empty, islands are empty, stray too far from any city and yeah you're going to encounter a really really empty world.

I must admit i did run into that problem in Thestra .... now i must say i pretty much was on the roads..So anyone have any other experiences off the road in Thestra? Some towns ....three rivers ... and Renton keep as well as some elven outposts including Veskels had some content around it...I give it that...but heading south...(as i said afraid to go off the road)..i didnt see anything...got to the city and it was devoid of quests....but like i said...i got lost and didnt explore much .... If anyone has anymore experience let me know...

Now i did just randomly go to an island...found some pirates...who were giving out quests...who wanted me to fight some undead pirates on the otherside of the island...but as far as island hopping...that is my only experience .... unlike others on the forums I will not speak for the other islands or other parts of the world i did not see.

This is one of the very things Asheron's Call 2 suffered from when it was released and it continued until it's death. A large world that looked nice but was completely dead save monsters to kill.

Without posting miles again, in short I can sum it up : gem is not complete.

Don't be upset, every beta has huge unpopulated spaces. Ofcourse not every beta costs 15$ a month + 50$ initially.

If you ask me though, this is a new invention of our visionary, called the "hardcore beta".

    That is a gross exageration.

I know, because in a few places I also saw some water. No fish, but there was water...

    I saw some rocks too.

Endless complaints about this game, and I just don't get it. There are tons of woodland creatures, critters, etc. throughout the entire game. In fact, the wild areas are the most realistic I've seen with actual wildlife creatures (like elk and bears and mountain lions) habitating those areas as opposed to random mobs and other fantastical/mythical creatures. I appreciate this touch to the world. Of course, there are those fantastical/mythical creatures and mobs, but they aren't placed haphazardly all over the place. The developers did a terrific job in making the natural world seem....natural.

Sure, there are also vast empty spaces but you have to look at it as content to be added in the future. The lands of Telon are HUGE and no MMORPG developer has had to contend with filling up this much space. Also, land near where plots have been laid (for player housing) tends to be very sparse. In both of these two instances, I really do believe Sigil will add more in the future.

UO had the best world.  It had a healthy balance of lands and creatures.  They even went to the extent to naming different kinds of birds.

Maybe it depends on starting area, but yeah, I know some have a lot of realistic wildlife types.  IMHO, the problem is that they don't behave realistically, they just act like any other mob.  Even most bears will run if you start swinging a sword at them, nevermind a deer,  Most animals run if they even see a person coming too close.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

There are a lot of critters, just not fluff critters. Given the engine problems with what's there already, suggestions to add to the graphics load with fluff are probably going to fall on deaf ears.

It's not the lack of critters that is responsible (alone) for the bland feel.  The art direction somehow missed the mark slightly, and Qalia as a whole is pretty bland, from desert landscape to architecture. ( I spent a couple of months or so in beta, then in release til mid last week, mostly in Qalia.)

Since the scenery is monotonous, and you spend so much time looking at it (because of the interminable travel they're so proud of) the effect of dullness is magnified by boredom.
