The X1600 will be a huge upgrade, and I doubt you have a PCI-E slot so I gave you a link to a AGP card. It is only 104$ so if you are on a budget, it isn't overly expensive.
I have no idea about onboard graphics cards but i do know i ran this game at its inception on a pentium 900,i think thats how it was named.Anyhow i only ran a very weak video card and even now only use an agp card.If you goto to the final fantasy xi main website there was a link on there somewhere to check your machine and video card.I used it myself along time ago.You will download a file that is similiar to a game scenario only uses the same situation as being in a heavily spammed jueno/whitegate areea. It will show you if i remember correctly ,your framerates. They should be around 30 or higher if you hope to enjoy any gameplay.
If the link isnt there anymore im sure it is somewhere if you google it,such as .....search FFXI compatibility or something similiar.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Actually, the benchmarker will give you a score throughout the demonstration which will give you an idea as to how well it will run at low and high settings. FFXI tops out at 25-30 fps anyways, and runs just fine between 10-15 fps. Here's a link that explains the scoring.

I wish more companies would put out benchmark programs like this. It solves a LOT of problems for buyers and players.
I wholeheartedly agree with that. That way, you don't go downloading or buying a game only to find out when you get home that it looks like crap or runs like it's got a house strapped to its back.

No. FFXI's graphics code requires a specific hardware feature ("Transform and Lighting" (TnL) hardware, to be specific) in your graphics hardware. Any nVidia or ATI graphics card will provide that feature. Intel integrated graphics hardware does not. It's not a matter of your graphics hardware not being powerful enough. A specific feature is required, and you don't have it.

FFXI isn't a graphics hog. It's a CPU hog. Graphics are mere flawless with older cards. So you should be fine if you have a 2.0 GHZ CPU at least.
I'm afraid that's not correct. You are right that FFXI does not place great demands on the graphics hardware. Even an old nVidia or ATI card will run it well. But if you don't have TnL hardware, it won't run, and the Intel hardware he's got doesn't have TnL hardware.
