It has the potential, but wether or not Turbine will realise this is a whole different story. I belive it WILL do well, but how well it will do depends entirely on Turbine.

I have not played yet, but from what I've heard the game seems to be a good, polished game. It will get a fair number of subscribers and all of that jazz, I don't know about number 1, but it definitely won't bomb with its quality and the LoTR fan base

I can honestly say that as of now this is just "another mmo". Because it really doesn't have that special something that will blow peoples mind. There's nothing really innovative nor new in this game right now.

But I do think (read; I do hope) that with future expansions this might change for the better.

Personally I think they're making the same mistake that gave SWG problems, which is that it's set in the middle of the story which can't be advanced without changing the game drastically. Same sorta thing as the Matrix Online too. It's nice to make a game based on these IPs but I think that the fact that the storyline is so set detracts from the gameplay. You know that your character will never really matter in the story of the game, because you've already read the story and you know what's going to happen. You know frodo goes to the mountain and tosses the ring away and the good guys win. I highly doubtt hey're going to have events to advance the story such as the movement of the fellowship and all that stuff. If they do they'll shortly end their game, and if they don't, the game will stagnate.

Its a great MMO but I don't really think it'll become the next big thing because so many MMOers don't like its setup.

    Currently: Playing EVE Online
Previous: FFXI, Dragonrealms, sad little stint in WOWland.
Awaiting: Fallen Earth, Hero''s Journey, Tabula Rasa, Age of Conan.

I think it will be a good solid business, not surpassing WoW's American/Asian sub numbers, but still doing well.   And the success will be well deserved.

The only people who will ever play an MMO are the ones already playing? Not saying it IS gonna be the next big thing. But It is gonna be a huge sucess. We get an MMO in the real deal FINALLY.  And Turbine did a great job, whether you like the game style or not, you gotta give them credit.

    See you in the dream..
The Fires from heaven, now as cold as ice. A rapid ascension tolls a heavy price.

I for one love this game and think it'll be a huge success, my point was that a lot of grind-loving so called 'hardcore' MMO fans bash it all the time in this forum and other places. Why? Because they really have nothing better to do.

So far I am having fun with this game. Though I will say this, it is a bit linear for an MMO and that will definitely turn some people off. That is not necessarily a bad thing so much as a matter of taste.

The storyline quests are awesome though, the dwarf starter quest was freakin awesome!
