Hey, I just downloaded Guildwars E3 demo and it was only a 62kb zip file.  after the installation was completed it only takes up 15.6 mb.

The have been talking about streaming data to gamers while you play.  This sounds great but I wonder how much slowdown it will be.  There website says that the game works on 28.8 modems.  Can you stream in houndreds of megabites at that speed and have the game still playable?

This game sounds too good to be true!

    Actually, first ask yourself...

Are hundreds of megabytes really necessary with todays compression methods?

A streamlined engine really need that much data?

If you think about how much information is really necessary in an MMORPG to be transferred its really quite little.

x,y,z coordinates, action type = probably 2 hex digits. Mapinfo = location scenery compressed code + monster info (probably 2 digits).

Not much info at all really. While you stay in one area info about surroundings could be slowly streamed to your comp. If it's properly compressed could be less than 100 k per 1km (in game distance) blocks.

Remember that bit about background being blurry till you get closer? Could influence streaming alot. Also since maps are instanced, no stream neccessary ingame except actions and few other commands.

This is where core-game design comes in.

Most other mmorpgs are built using existing technology and code (including WOW). Putting bits that weren't optimised together, making an even bigger messs. Ever ask yourself why even the dumbest game on your comp takes up at least 1 gig?

Arenanet have designed everything from the ground up. Everything was built to maximise efficiency. Hence the awesome graphics with reasonable vid card requirments, hance the uber streamlined net code.

Not only have they designed everything, but they are also real good at it and have come up with innovative new ways to improve on previous code.

The demo "should" prove me right.
