People who dislike Vanguard say it looks blah, and people who enjoy Vanguard think it looks amazing. I for one think it is the most immersive world since UO/EQ. The Kojani coast and forests, the deserts and shores of Thestra, the Qalian tundra; for the explorer in me they are all awe inspiring. Looking up at the battlements high above the Dwarven starting area of Bordinars cleft, looking down at the city of Khal miles away and thousands of metres below the Thestran human starting area, I could go on and on but the world is fantastic and bustling with life and fraught with danger.
Everyone has an opinion and we are all individuals. I guess it comes down to finding a game world that you want to be in. I wish you luck in your quest for the same. And finding something to post positively about I think would improve everyones outlook on life itself.
Oh well, back to work!
I like this game, but I think it's blah too. Yet again, we have a game that has really high graphical specs, but lacks good art direction and has tons of bump mapping. I play the game, by myself. My friends don't want to play it because it's laggy and tough on their computers. I am glad to say that it's far better than EQ2 was originally. And if they don't dumb it down like they did with EQ2, then I'll keep playing.
But the graphics.... I just wish these developers would spend some money on artists from time to time. But art is subjective and I agree that some like it, and some don't. But you have to admit, the textures are poorly done, and the bumping is ridiculous. I do like the trees though.
Vanguards art director was Keith Parkinson up until his passing, and Brom also has art credits in Vanguard. I don't think, I KNOW it's a matter of taste where art is concerned. They have some of the best fantasy artists of our time working on Vanguard. Textures poorly done? Have you even looked at the ground? I know it's subjective, but the textures in Vanguard are just so spot on I can't wrap my brain around how someone could say that. Sometimes it's like people are playing a different game than me.

I agree with you about the landscapes actually. My first impressions when I entered the game was good. (thestran human/halfling area) Out in the open, the landscape is very nice. I also like the character models and the weapons & armor. And as I mentioned, I do love the trees. However I was pretty disappointed when I got near some buildings (stone buildings especially), this is where the bad texture maps and over bumping really show. And I can agree that art is subjective. But it does seem to me that infrastructure, world landscaping, and character models just don't fit together somehow. Possibly different teams working on them without proper coordination maybe?
And this may be due to some technical reason with the world being so huge. Or possibly neglected near the end to focus more on the coding to get the servers as stable as possible before release. Who knows.
It also lacks a lot of the details and extra touches that WoW is so known for. Go into a house in WoW and you'll be inundated with typical items and accessories you would expect to find in a lived in house, this kind of thing is missing in Vanguard. Farms with actual crops and stacks of hay, ambient wild life from butterflies to seagulls and squirrels and rabbits. I ran around the wilds of Vanguard, starting from the Vulamne home town to the northeast and direct north shorelines. Once I left the typical newbie areas, finding animals, mobs and other points of interest were very rare. It reminded me of early Anarchy Online, you have all of this beautiful, but empty space with little life to it.
With PvE raiding, it has never been a question of being "good enough". I play games to have fun, not to be a simpering toady sitting through hour after hour of mind numbing boredom and fawning over a guild master in the hopes that he will condescend to reward me with shiny bits of loot. But in games where those people get the highest progression, anyone who doesn't do that will just be a moving target for them and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay money for the privilege. - Neanderthal

No worse than WoW being considered akin to Looney Tunes. Let's not have double standards on these boards now.
Im starting to feel sorry for those of you who spend your extra time trolling the vanguard boards. What kind of sad miserable person follows people around who like something trying desperately to dissuade them from doing what they like? Thats like following around people who drink Coke, and because you dont like it, you have to go anyone enjoying a coke and piss on their gate about it. You guys come to the Vanguard area just to be disrespectful, and its pretty immature in general. So you dont like it, great, say it, and move it, on. Dont be so sad as to invest precious minutes of your life doin this. Seriously go play a game you like. And stop the broken record trolling please.
P.S. If you people spent more time complaining about things that mattered instead of investing all your energy on ragging on video games, perhaps youd accomplish something positive. Then again from some standpoints, you are right where you belong, not bothering the rest of the world.
See, this is a common source of misunderstandings in the world, the tendency to believe that everything is about YOU.
No one -- I repeat, NO ONE -- is trying to dissuade you from anything. If you like Vanguard the way it is, more power to you. You can play it from now until the day you die, and it won't make a bit of difference to anyone posting here.
People post criticisms of this game not because they want to ruin your fun, but for several other reasons:
First, they want Sigil to know why they are dissatisfied. How else will the game improve if the developers don't know what's wrong with it?
Second, they want to warn people who are thinking of getting the game. If those people want to believe the fanbois over the critics, then that's their problem, but at least they won't be able to say they weren't warned. It's no different than the way you might warn a friend against seeing a terrible movie.
And finally, there's the matter of setting the record straight. I see all kinds of dishonest and/or incomplete reporting coming out of the fans on this board. There is nothing wrong with trying to set the record straight.
As for "broken record trolling," how is posting a criticism any more a waste of time than broken record fanboyism? Neither person is playing the game or "accomplishing something positive," as you so vaguely suggest.
You know what's immature? Telling someone to go away because you don't want anyone else to hear their opinion. Fans are scared to death (and rightly so) that people will read the bad news and not buy the game, and Sigil will get what's coming to them for releasing a turd. Negative comments can't ruin anyone's fun. If you find them so painful, you don't have to read them. But there are a lot of people who want to hear the bad as well as the good before they buy.
Have I ever looked at the ground? We look at the ground all the time, and this is one of the problems, it looks great up-close (cartoonish, but very detailed) but it's like it wasn't designed to look great from a distance. And 99% of the time, we see it from a distance. Even just the distance of a few paces, it loses it's fine detail, but lacks attention to macro-detail.
As for being cartoonish, I only object to that, because people bill it as realistic, and I prefer realism. Vanguard's graphics are more like cartoon textures on realistic models. Yes, look at the ground - it's very stylized, looks distinctly drawn, with colors that aren't really a natural sort of vibrant. Look at trees, with all thier bump mapping, and the flat shade of brown many of them use, like in the wood elf areas. They don't use real bark rextures as inspiration, I can tell you that. I'm not sure what they use, but it is cartoonish.
Also, I think all that bump-mapping they do actually causes problems, such as being inherently low res. You can't bump-map subtle variations, so in some ways, a lot of textures actually lack detail. Like sand, where they try to bump-map the grains of sand, it just doesn't work realistically, it makes the grains of sand look huge and unrealistic. Same with bark, or dirt, rough stone, and grass. Those types of textures need the sort of detail that can't be bump-mapped.
I don't know about those two artists, but suspect that maybe computer game art isnt thier strong point, or maybe direction is a lot more difficult than making good art, I dunno. That maybe that something else caused some sort of problem. I'll read up about them later, so thanks for the info.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
I'm clearly dealing with an especially simple minded person here, but I'll respond to your idiotically regurgitated queries regardless:
What game are you playing and why are you here again? And why would you care if Vanguard succeeds or not. Unless you are again another one whose outcry for help is because Vanguard is taking away your games subs. Otherwise why care about a game you obviously dont like?
I'm currently playing World of Warcraft, but have subscribed to and beta tested numerous games over the years.
I do not care in the slightest whether Vanguard succeeds or not. I am concerned only with whether the game is improved or not to the point that I will be willing to pay for a subscription.
I am even less concerned about the idea that Vanguard might be 'taking away my games subs'. Vanguard is a niche product for hardcore gamers. It was always going to be a niche product for hardcore gamers. World of Warcraft was designed to appeal to the masses of casual gamers, and it has done that and more as it discovered millions of potential new gamers in the market. There is no fair comparison that can be made between them. They are not in competition with each other by any means.
I do not dislike Vanguard, and certainly not obviously so. I've been thoroughly disappointed with it after looking forward to the game for years, but I'm still hopeful that it might be improved over time and I still consider myself a potential future subscriber.
Lol, just as a suspected, another WoW troll. I smelt you a mile away.
Actually, he answered you in a respectful and truthful manner. Don't just read the "I'm currently playing World of Warcraft" and dismiss him as a troll. He gave his opinion of the graphical integrity of Vanguard and that is that. We don't have to fight over what games we play, or what style we like. There are parts of Vanguard that are awesome graphically, and there are places in the game that lack, well, for lack of a better description, refinement and detail. There are even a lot of places in WoW that lack refinement and are statuesque when there should be more movement. Sometimes you just have to take things with a grain of salt and hope they get better.
I really like Vanguard and currently play it every day. There are a LOT of aspects in it that are great with or without the graphical setting. I also see what a few are saying. I've played WoW before and I hate their graphics, but I totally understand what elements give it the life and belonging they are talking about. It's not a sin to be subjective and call an orange orange, but I can appreciate the taste of the orange. I like the realism in Vanguard over WoW, and I hope everything comes together in a couple months and we can all appreciate a fine piece of work.
It's ok to bash Vanguard, how else will it get any better. If everyone thinks it's perfect, then it won't fire up someone to improve it. Whether we like it or not, it needs improvement, and I'm all for a better experience in my gaming.

I'd like to add that for me, at least, it's mostly just a matter of liking discussion. Isn't that common? To have opinions, and to want to discuss those opinions with others? Do we really need more of a motive than that? I'm still playing Vanguard, but even if I weren't, it's possibly I'd want to discuss my reasons for dissatisfaction, before moving on to a new game.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Don't worry about the negative nellies. These are people with such empty lives that they post daily on message boards dedicated to things they don't like. Imagine how empty one's existence one must be for this?
I'm at a loss. I can't stand liver. Stuff makes me gag and retch. Oddly enough, I don't eat liver. Some of the clowns here remind me of that. They can't stand liver either. Except, they keep eating it, gagging and retching all the while, then screaming about how foul it tastes. I'm in the LotRO beta. I found it entirely uninspiring to the point where I had no interest in logging in. I'd rather sit, and do nothing at all. Never once have I posted in the LotRO forums, I don't leap into every thread there spouting some bullshit about how I'm on a mission from god to save the consumer from uninspired gameplay to cover up the fact that I get my yayas from pissing on other peoples parades. Or the old, "I'm entitled to my opinion" claptrap. Yep, you sure are. And we've heard it. 10,000 times over. At this point, it's well beyond expressing your opinion, and into "Hey, look at me, I can piss in your face, too!" territory.
You probably have a life. I was bored by several games to the left. I spend ZERO time on those boards telling peopel incessantly why. It's such a negative enterprise and my life isn't fueled by such things.
DnL, huh? Why stop there? Why not say it installed a dozen different viruses on your system, or maybe reformatted your HDD, causing the loss of thousands of dollars of data? Caused testicular cancer, and now you're gonna die?

People who dislike Vanguard say it looks blah, and people who enjoy Vanguard think it looks amazing. I for one think it is the most immersive world since UO/EQ.
