EVERY MMO out there sucks!

everything sucks .... its either a super grind fest which you gotta play 24/7 ... or else you're left behind and your friends all move on past ya ...or its boring as hell with no switch hitting game mechanics .... or too shallow  ... or too buggy .... or too desolate ... or ... well you get the idea ....

i think the genre is officially dead in terms of innovation and originality .. and the only people left playing are the true addicts to the grind and virutal mmo ego ....

game companies right now are just using flashy franchise names and super addictive gameplay parameters to hook their monthly subs into your charge card ....

mark my words when i tell you the next big MMORPG to come out will be something cheesy like " AMERICAN IDOL" and come with usb microphones and webcams ...

i think i need to leave this genre and find the next big thing out there as far as creativety is concerned ... im hearing RTS games may be making a comeback with some innovative stuff out there ...

crap i might even get into FPS again ...

although my ultimate dream is to find an immersive detective game that lets you scan over complex evidence create a case files on a killer and that groups you up with maybe two or three other cops and the killer whom ya have to find ... not an MMO but an online rpg

i guess the only MMO id be interested in ... at this point .. would be a bladerunner/outland type dark gritty sci fi type thing ... a little less grind a little more intellectual

bye you're just one to leave.  considering there are 14-20 million plus new MMO players from WoW(people who have moved on but want to play an MMO).  kinda leaves you typing at your at your keyboard spitting into the wind.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

I think the guy was kinda blunt but in a sense truthful. The selection of first rate MMORPGs over the past year or so has sucked.. I don't know how Guild Wars get so rave reviews. From a PVPer/Socializer point of view its utterly horribly having basically the whole game instanced. I played WOW for 2 years before that game put me to sleep. I'm surprised i lasted that long with the horrible PVP that WOW has. What are most PVPer's waiting for? Warhammer Online said to be released 4Q07. Why WAR? Because it comes from the same game company that produced the legendary above all Dark Ages of Camelot.

I don't know if saying they all suck would be the best way of putting it but they are all virtually the same. I'm seriously considering going back to playing DAOC after a couple year absence. Why? For one I'm a gamer. Secondly there is nothing in the immediate horizon game wise that interests most of us long time MMORPG players. Any game can have a grind fest *puke*.. I'm considering Vanguard but negative press has me on hold also lol.. So the OP does have a point. Not much creativity let alone ingenuity has been in recent game releases. Yeah they get prettier but under that they are nearly clones.

Top tier MMOs require big budgets to get off the ground so they are painfully mainstream. Barring the "boutique" MMOs that are either browser based or made to accommodate total populations of 10,000 or less, you aren't going to find any originality.

If you want games that are original, you need to start watching the indie scene. Keep an eye on The independent Gaming Source, Game Tunnel, and Man!festo Games. MMOs are few and far between in the indie scene, but they do happen every now and then. But if you're just looking for originality, you need to step away from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and EBGames.

That was called Majestic. It was put out by Electronic Arts back in '01 and it was very entertaining and very creepy (especially if your significant other answered the phone and didn't know what it was all about). Unfortunately it got the axe alongside Air Warrior, Multiplayer Battletech and Motorcity Online when EA lost it's mind and canceled everything it could get it's hands on.

While the OP, as somebody else put it, was blunt he did have legitimate reasons for being displeased with the industry right now. When I first got into MMO gaming, it was a bold exploration into the possibilities of building games around a community. My first endeavor was NexusTK; and while today looks very childish and archaic...back then the only other competitors were (that we knew of) were The Realm and Ultima Online. Before we ventured into the 2D, zelda-esque MMO hack'n'slash, the only other thing we've played was original Diablo 1 over Battle.net

For years, we saw EQ, Anarchy Online, and many other MMO's begin to spring to life. We all had ventures in Everquest, and I remember everybody getting all excited when Kunark came out. The interfaces were SCARY....today's EQ is nothing compared to what I originally had to play on. 166 MMX, 128 megs of RAM, 32 Meg Stealth III card....yeah, very intimidating stuff.

We were still dealing with scary commands, key macros, graphics settings....but we had fun.

Years later....I've sat down to play World of Warcraft, and despite the nice looking graphics and exciting feel....I get into it feeling the only thing that's making me enjoy it over original EQ is the lack of spell memorization times and food requirements. Other than that, it was only the same game with graphics.

I've been trying to find a good MMO as of late. I miss the days of getting on, meeting people, tackling monsters and quests and exploring. But a lot of the new games feel small; the battles for some reason aren't as intense in the new 3d models as the stiff boxy EQ fights were. I find myself missing NexusTK's spacebar slapping combat and insane spell macros. I miss days when we'd play on Rallos Zek PvP on EQ1, and have an all halfling Anti-PK guild. For some reason, trying it in the new games just isn't the same any more.

The grind of MMO's isn't the shine...the ones that were fun to grind in brought something new to the table originally. Umpteen clones later, it feels too much like playing Dark Reign after I've spent years playing nothing but Warcraft 2 and Command & Conquer....yeah, it's kinda fun, and it looks different and all....but its still the same. Play for a week maybe, and then sit idle for a month, and then meet the oblivion in the uninstall.

It's in the developers hands. Right now we have a ton of clones out there, and a few gems here and there. It's up to the developers to make sure those gems shine; and the other games still have a chance to be polished up into something good. I originally wasn't too sure about Guild Wars when it first came out....waited a while until Factions was released. Now I own all chapters of it and have had a stable Guild for a year now.

I guess its just the cold harsh truth of any game industry....you hit a boom, and suddenly everyone tries to cash in on it, and suddenly the market floods with cheap knockoffs and half-assed design teams working on a deadline. First Person Shooters have this, RTS's have it, etc. We'll just need to wait around and see what new gems get polished up soon :P

Well um, don't put your hopes in fps games right now. I'm a long time fps player and still give most of them a try, and I can safely say there is nothing going for that style right now. In fact, that genre is so lacking right now I know of some very long standing clans that are falling apart because there are no new classics making their mark. The rts field is wide open though, I'm still having a lot of fun with Company of Heroes, it's just a very well made game, and it was made to have fun instead of being too into itself. Hard to explain that one.

MMORPG. I'm not feeling it yet, going to have to wait for some of the ones in the works to come out.

Never give up and never surrender!

Unfortunately it isn't really in the developers hands. To get a game on the shelves, stores want to be sure they will make money stocking it, the guarantees can be in the millions for advertising and such, they don't want something that will take up warehouse space forever.  Development costs are now in the millions themselves. Most individuals or small companies don't have that kind of money, and to develop a game that can hit the shelves generally some sort of outside investment is involved. Being that investors don't want to lose millions of dollars, they in a way have a right to insist on some known quantity. Knowm
quantities in the MMO world tend to deal with some sort of WoW or EQ derivative, and the large amount of them understandably makes some people want to puke. Known quantity = lack of or only mild amounts of innovation. So there might be and probably are tons of innovative ideas that would be the next MMO that you would REALLY want to play, but the fact that people don't want to risk millions on a might or maybe prevents them from coming to light. My only current hopes are on Tabula Rasa....

I agree completely with what you say, unfortunately. It's the truth: Companies would rather invest in something that follows a proven successful formula vs. experiment with a new direction. But it'll eventually come to a point where there is an open market, and the companies will realize they need to rejuvinate and reinvent the genre. EQ was sort of a big leap for sony to try, and in my opinion was a miracle it became as big as it did. I mean, let's be honest...it was like Quake for D&D players.

But I have faith. Look at Three Rings....love it or hate it, Puzzle Pirates is a success story.  It's an mmo (not an rpg) game where everyone's pirates WHO PLAY PUZZLE GAMES TO KEEP A SHIP AFLOAT. Very successful.  Had a friend recommend it to me a while back while he beta tested it, and we've seen that community boom. The other day I actually was shocked to see a RETAIL BOX for it at Wal Mart.

A company I'm going to follow is the newly restarted Acclaim. 9Dragons wasn't anything exciting, yet, but it has potential to expand into something good. It has some innovative concepts in it, so we'll see what happens after its beta. 2Moons sounds like it could either put them on the map, or fall into another cliche. We'll have to see, and it could easily go either way. If they can pull it off though, it'll change things up a bit. It'll reach a broader market with its costs (free with optional in-game ads that'll boost game play), and marketing it to a more mature crowd. We'll see what happens.

Not computer games, but have you tried any free-form games? They often run at role-playing conventions. In a well put together free-form each person acts in real time as a character with his own highly detailed personality, goals etc. Some of them include situations very much like the one described above (although with 20+ other people around all of whom have their own plots to worry about).
