combat question

I'm wondering in pvp combat , if there is friendly fire stray cannon fire. If a friendly was directly behind an enemy and your shots went right over and hit friendly. Would they take damage or not? Also can ramming damage be done?

No friendly fire; there's too much grief potential.  Friendly ships do block your line of fire, though, making line formations the most effective way to concentrate firepower.

There's no ramming damage for the same reason (grief) but you can ram other ships to drive them off-course or push them into the wind.

Unless your in like a situation where 3 different countries are in the same battle you may end up shooting ppl that arent your current target i think

I think those mechanics are going to take away from the realism of tactics, but because of that it will add a whole lot of depth to the strategy.

I'm sorry, take away from realistic tactics?  I wish you would explain yourself better.. I'm not really understanding what you're implying.  I think it's pretty realistic, in that in real battles, it is pretty stupid to ram a ship unless you were the vikings with ships designed for ramming.. which wasn't during this time era anyways :D

I am pretty sure in real life, those that did the ramming were more screwed than those that were being rammed.  I'm not sure how it will add to strategy, since i was under the impression that strategy was like battle planning outside of a fight such as "Take this port to make a choke point" etc., not on the spot choices in battle.  But, i dunno.. maybe i should look it up :p
