not very good news for WAR. There a ton more 40k fans then fantasy. I think it will destroy war.
However, this game may not be on the market for 3 to 4 yrs
Are you saying that sci-fi is more popular than fantasy? Take a look over the MMORPG's today and you'll notice a different truth. And what do you actually mean by "own" WAR Online? It's not like it's gonna bankrupt it or anything xD

Uhh does that link actually work? tired to c & p it but i got nothing...besides it can be confirmed all it wants doesn't mean it'll happen. Of course I'll be honest I have no interestin the 40k world at all.

WH 40k is a great IP to have... Hopefully Vigil games is competent enough with such a HUGE IP. While most of my Warhammer experience is from the fantasy side the 40k side always seemed more like Warhammer on Steroids Basically what I am saying is that the scope of 40k always seemed huge. Star Wars was too big for Verant Interactive and the SOE to be truly successful with and 40k seems to dwarf Star Wars in every way. Then again, it makes for alot of expansion packs hehe.
Wonder why Relic aint doing it, says they were advertising for MMO devs. What games has Vigil done?
They have some NCSoft people according to the interview. Their site is www.vigilgames.com
From that site:
Take one legendary comic artist, one technological guru, and add a host of experienced artists, designers, programmers and managers, and you have a recipe for groundbreaking gaming – you have Vigil Games. Vigil is on a mission to develop the kind of experience that gamers remember forever.
As announced in mid-March, Vigil Games recently became a part of the rapidly expanding THQ family, and we ourselves are looking to grow. Fast. Check our JOBS page for proof.
Vigil Games is located in sunny Austin, Texas. Austin features a rare mix of outdoor activities, nightlife, artistic and cultural diversity as well as technological sophistication - while still maintaining affordable living costs. Check it out!

Just checked them out, cheers. So they must have impressed GW and THQ to be given such a major IP as their first MMO. With an IP like that announced devs are gonna be lining up to get a job with them. They should be able to easily get good experienced talent.
I might contact them for a job, I could be their tester, im very dedicated, I need little sleep and I'll work for a blanket in the corner and beer.
"AJ: Perhaps a detail, but we have actually inked one deal that gives THQ the worldwide, exclusive rights to develop interactive entertainment products based on Warhammer 40,000 for all genres on all platforms. In terms of time scale, the agreement is intentionally set up to have a long enough term that THQ can really design and develop a top-quality, innovative MMO based on our long-established and market-leading Warhammer 40,000 property."

hmm it all depends on how much middleware they use etc. They could be like most everyone else and be licensing the engine (bigworld, unreal3 etc) get speedtree to do all the flora on all their locations, physx or havoc to handle all their booms and flashies. Depending on how much they are doing completely inhouse etc it isnt beyond reason that 2-3 years could be enough to show something.
Lets look at EA Mythic. 4 years (or so ago) they had announced Imperator Online and had some screenshots and stuff up. Was scheduled for 2007 I believe? Maybe 2006. Anyway. 2 years or so ago Imperator was shelved indefinately and rumors of Warhammer came to light. Last year EA and mythic joined forces and Warhammer Online is coming late this year.
Age of Conan became common knowledge when.,.. E3 last year? Maybe a couple months before hand and it too is coming this year.
I think the length of the agreement between GW and THQ, not to mention the breadth, is to demonstrate GW's full support of THQ. And there are hints in there about far more than an MMO. There cuold be action rpgs coming, shooters, more RTS's, maybe full RPG's etc. Hopefully though they wont push out a bunch of crap with the WH40k label slapped on it. I really hope they have seen how bad Lucas handles their own IPs
I'm just saying don't expect to see it before the end of 2008 at the absolute earliest. The part where he mentioned the duration of the license is what makes me believe it will be a game that's 3-4 years out.

hehe well 3 has always been a questionable one for me :P 4 or 5 is a few. while a couple is 2. :P But its all neither here nor there. I would expect no sooner than 09 for good gameplay footage to be completely honest. Mythic I think re-used alot of the base stuff from imperator for Warhammer. VG uses Unreal3 and look at its state of release after 5 years (and maybe a switch in unreal tech?) I hope they take their time with it though. With Warhammer, TR, and AoC all coming this year, STO coming probably next year and Marvel sometime soonish there are far too many to choose from!

Ok now that i've seen the actual article I'll comment...first im not sure if i can trust anything thats main house is THQ, sure their strat game is great but...look at the list of games their houses are primarily linked too it makes me question what their design team will come up with regardless of veterans they picked up.
IT does take up to 3 to 4 years for games to come out to the press and launch. We may not know about the game being in existance until its a year or two years away from its launch such as the case with Ages of Conan because companies keep a pretty tight veil of secrecy.
Mythic has definitly been working on Warhammer for quite a while more than likely a seperate small team started the design for the game while they were concentrating on Imperator. Until the game was ultimately ruled lame, a waste, or just not going anywhere and shelved. Its really not that uncommon plenty of companies take on a couple of games at once, work and design on both then if one simply just isn't going to work it or there's some polictics involved it gets dropped.
Considering there's no real said plan for if and when this 40k game will come out expect us not to see much of it for atleast 2 to 3 years maybe even longer if they plan the game really well and don't simply clone it from something else. Even with middleware and other systems they still have to learn how to use those systems and put them together. And you can't just buy a program that writes the gameplay you have to do that by yourself. All that plus testing and writing the networking code yea middleware does not cut down on production time really all that much but it does up production costs!
At this point they simply have the rights too the 40k world and video games that go with it.
Please Refer to Doom Cat with all conspiracies & evil corporation complaints. He'll give you the simple explination of..WE"RE ALL DOOMED!
I'll admit it: I'm definitely less interested in WAR with this news. Yes, I love Warhammer, but honestly I'm tired of medival fantasy MMOs. If the 40K MMO won't be coming out for some time, then yes, I'll still be buying WAR. Hell, this game looks tight enough that I'll probably buy it anyway, but in the long run, the life for this game is going to be much shorter for me with a 40K MMO on the horizon. We'll see what happens, though. If it turns out they're just developing a MMORTS, for example, I have no interest in that genre.
From GW's perspective, this was a smart move. Blizzard beat them to the punch with WoW before they could get a Warhammer Fantasy MMO off the ground, and as such every ignorant fanboy out there who looks at WAR automatically thinks "z0mg they are ripping off teh wow wtF?!??" If GW can get a 40K MMO out the door before Blizzard gets a Starcraft MMO up and running (if they ever even pursue such a game), I think it'll put a lot of weight in GW's corner. Not to mention that Warhammer 40K is more popular than the Warhammer Fantasy universe.
Either way, very interesting news. Hopefully we'll get some specifics soon (like what genre the game is actually going to be).

I will reserve judgment until I see some actual information, obviously, but I will say this much: I doubt this Warhammer 40K MMOG will 'own' WAR.
For one, I have serious doubts about the ability of some fairly inexperienced developer to MMOGs making a top-notch MMOG. Sure, it has been done before, and everyone must start somewhere, but recent efforts from newer companies have been fairly disappointing. I just do not trust THQ to pull it off quite yet.
Secondly, I think that while fantasy can be considered to be overdone, it is overdone for a reason - the mainstream MMOG crowd seems to like it. There is certainly room for another good sci-fi MMOG, but they will never topple high fantasy MMOGs in the foreseeable future.
I am indeed curious what the focal point of the game will be. Mythic has RvR, a concept they developed previously and added to in WAR, but what will THQ do to distinguish their game? Should be interesting.
will go a more combat (maybe even fps) route. Kinda like Huxley is gunna do.
This is just a gut feeling, got nothing to back it up.
Also remember its very early days. If they dont come up with really REALLY good ideas GW will just pull the plug.
Id be suprised if they let some1 without alot of mmo exp develop a warhammer game. Also I can see EA Mythic trying to steal this one as a project for after WAR

From what they say, while the company is new, the devs ain't. So it is not that these guys are perfect nobodies, they all worked on some other MMorpg project.
of course this could mean a lot or nothing, but still...
I personally do not believe they are making a MMORTS. It makes no sense to NOT give such a project to Relic or at least use Relic as advisors as they are like the Gods of RTS.
So, it is either a MMOFPS, a "small" MMorpg (not taking the whole ip) or something different. They mention the gameplay will be innovative, but of course that could be Corporation bullcrap.
Still, a traditional MMorpg scheme does not work well with Warhammer 40k unless it is necromunda. And that is unprobable "hey, wehave this huge IP everybody knows and you get to do a game for it! Great, we will take this obscure game offshot only 10% of the people actually know and do it on that!!1111"

GW prob wont let this go ahead. They wont want their 2 games to fight eachother. Think about it this way.
If you were going to build two theme parks, would you build them on the same street? Hell no, you would build them ver away from eachother. Maximise ur exposure + customer base.
Now think of it the same way for this. Release WaR now, and 40k in line 6 years. thatway people will play both games. Hell by the time people have finished with 40k you could bring out WaR again and live like fat rats!!
