Perhaps it is just me but has anyone noticed the wealth of concrete information on the development of this game?  Is this Mythic or is this GW that has decided to open some doors for the fanbase to pop their heads in?  As I am TOO familiar with SOE and their method of opening a door and then quickly shutting it before you can pull your head back out, I find this......refreshing.  Videos and podcasts on a consistant basis seem to be the norm, and not just the standard blah, blah, blah.  Instead, stuff like, this is our animator guy, this is what he does, this is how he does it and this it what it will look like in game.  Sprinkle with a little humor.  Podcast it.

I dunno, it just seems like they are keeping people posted on everything thats going on.  Maybe it's a method of making sure the hype stays up or maybe it's a way to generate anticipation for the release.  Regardless, I'm not used to it and I like it.  I hope it is a sign of things to come.

  Just a thought.

It is good business to let your customers know what product is being offered to them.

I think SoE mostly kept their stuff a secret because they weren't even sure of the crap they were churning out.

Also, I must add that the podcasts are hilarious.  I, for one, am really stoked to get the newsletter each time it comes out.  They way EA Mythic is handling things is by far the best.  If you are promoting a funny, brutal, PvP and PvE mix, you need to be funny to promote it.

    i love this too.

To many games just have static stuff on the offical site, and when it rarely gets updated its with more static stuff that you have seen before on fan sites.

The wealth of information that is avaiable, and easy to get, about this game makes a great game that i am pre-ordering as soon as i can here, *koff* some one in aus should pull their finger out and let me do this *koff* EB games*koff*, that much better as i get a sense that game is actualy progressing and not that ive spent how ever much waiting for a game that i kn nothing about...

That and GW staff are crazy, and thats kool.

As others have said, I adore the transparancy that Mythic is providing. I have to admit that Blizzard was rather good at building hype for their game and at the same time keeping a level of mystery to it that was appealing (Eccept for the burning crusade... the amount of people breaking their no comment contracts was just sickening and ruined a lot of the surpise for me)

Mythic is taking the oppisite tact. By being completely transparent and videoing or podcasting damn near every step of the process they are providing themselves a TON of free publicity, via the news/game websites and fan based video sites and other such such.

Also by doing this they are 'letting there chums' into the process. I don't know about you but if I met Paul Barnett on the street and he asked me for a fiver, I would feel like one of my old friends had just asked me. I would still say no... but I would not mind him asking.

Honestly, I live in Washington DC and Fairfax Virginia is just a 20 minute metro ride away, if I did meet Paul or anyone else at Mythic it would really feel like I knew them from highschool or something. Just the sheer volume of info and insider stories and videos they provide give such a sense of intimacy and Sheer enjoyment of the development process that its almost impossible not to want to play the game.

Paul Barnet was right when he called marketing evil.. Brilliiant and creative but PURE EVIL...

If I ever run a business I am so kidnapping their marketing department...

The Only other marketing I have ever seen that is that good were the ones for cigerette companies, but thats a WHOLE nother kind of evil

Agreed, Mythic are doing a hell of a job keeping folk amused and informed at the same time, im impressed.

Those $OE dumbasses think they are working in area 51 and every little detail is a secret. The funny thing is every secret thing that gets put to live by $OE on SWG NGE anyway is a pile of crap and might aswell have stayed hidden within $OE!

First off, let me say whats up to the mmo fanbase, been awhile since I posted. Mythic has been giving us a good amount of info before SOE took over. I don't believe mythic will close the doors on us after leaving em wide open. The last four days of the month are killer for me , I go on twenty times a day to check for a newsletter. Whenever I start to lose interest and sign off the forums for weeks to a month the newsletter comes in and resparks my interest. Look at the hype after the last newsletter(the one before the recent one) our hype rose and brought us in first again. Its a very good stragey.

Personally, I think they are lieing to us. They have the game done and are laughing at us behind the podcast camara. Mocking us...MOCKING I SAY!....But no, really I dont think they are further along then they let on. But the stuff they are showing is really cool so I guess I wont start the conspiracy website...for now...

I think they have a lot of the basics down, from what I have seen from a lot of the videos, but I bet what they are lacking most is pure content. It is typically at the later stages of development that the world gets fleshed out. I am guessing things like quests, itemization, zones (especially for the Elves), etc., are all quite minimal at this point. Not to mention that they have no even shown us the High Elves and Dark Elves, which likely means they are only semi-complete.

So yeah, in some respects I think they are pretty far along, but in sheer content I doubt they are anywhere near finished.

Mythic are really experts at marketing their games, DAOC would never have been such a sucess if  they hadn't done their advertisement in such a special way, And now they are doing thesame thing with WAR, but on a new level.

And thats just one of the thousands of reasons why i love Mythic, hope they will make a DAOC2 after WAR :)

I've always found Mythic to be a game developer that actually cares as much about the people playing their games as they do the game itself. The Grab Bag every Friday is just an example of this. Sanya would actually take questions submitted by players to the devs and get answers then post them in a weekly article. I have never seen another MMO developer go to this level. I always had a pleasant experience whenever i needed to submit a petition and they never just brushed me off.

It almost seems like Mythic doesn't have an NDA in place for this game. Most of the stuff they don't answer are about things they are still trying to figure out so they refrain from comment. This seems to be more out of an unwillingness to give the playerbase any kind of promises that players will turn around and try to rip into Mythic about than trying to keep some bit of information about the game from the community. It's a very refreshing change from the norm and I really hope it starts a new trend.

If you read the forums you will find, a few developers USE to play priest.

I do understand why they do not currently play priest.

Would you want to get harassed all day by your boss hearing: "Fix it, now. Fix it, now. Fix it, now." and "Put it in, now. Put it in, now. Put it in, now"; then go to play your character and hear:

"H3ALZ NOW, H3ALZ NOW, H3ALZ NOW!!!!" or "BUFFZ PLZ!......"

Playing a straight healer is a pain in the arse... playing a hybrid healer is a pain in the arse for that matter...

Thats one of the reasons I'm looking forward to WAR, only idiots will complain about me being on the front lines as  a War priest.

    siriously?

1 in 100 people actually do that and secondly if they do there like 10 years old and dont really matter to begin with.

Sir If I offended you I apologize.

But i will not apologize for the post.

I have played WoW on many servers since the day it came out and I have gotten the repeated tells asking me to heal on almost a daily basis. Especially in battlegrounds.

And the post was supposed to be humorous MAKING FUN of how healers work, and how players react to them, in WoW.

And for you to take issue with that post just because I aired my opinion (and not even an opinion really, I was just making a funny post based on my experiences) astounds and amazes me.

And if you think only one person in 100 does that crap, then either your on the best server in WoW or you have never been to any of the healer Forums (paladin, priest, druid, shaman, ect...) they complain about it constantly.

    /Rant Off.

Thats my story and I am sticking to it.

I totally agree with this. I do not play games to be a servant in the background, which is what the classic healer really is. Some may find that fun - I cannot argue with that - but the fact remains you exist to buff and heal others, which relegates you to watching timers and health bars. The other people get to get into the fight and mix it up, and might even get a chance to look up at the screen and see what is going on.

On top of that, healers are always yelled at and made to feel as though they exist to heal and buff every person they come across. And do not even start with loot - in a PUG, the fighters have usually looted every corpse long before the healer can get to them.

Well I know everyone will probably bash me for saying this but I really don't give a damn. But I think Warhammer really is trying to follow (and in some cases improve ) the path that Blizzard took with WOW. If anyone can remember in the development in WOW it was like a open book. They put it all on the table for people to see, and let us see exactly what there vision was for the game. Hell even during beta for a long period they didn't even have a NDA..

I think Mythic see's that they have another WOW on their hands and why not try to follow in the path of a game that was the most successful ever.

And btw the main reason why im now following WAR instead of AOC is due to Development team. They make you want to root for them and hope they can pull it off.. Its like watching a family memeber in a way, you cannot help but want to cheer for them. While watching the AOC development team is like watching every other MMORPG team out there.. All they seem to want to do is realease bits and pieces of info a little bit at a time, at their at their own pace.

It's just more fun this way, and I think it really speaks to community in a positive way.  Let's face it, the people that follow games in development for months and years at a time are the minority.  And being open with us is exactly what we want.  It gets us more excited, we'll talk about the game more on forums, and overall drive up the hype.

It can backfire in two different ways, though.

    1.  If they tell us something is in, then change it, people are going to complain.  Honestly, this never bothered me.  It's fun to watch the game evolve over time.  But still, some people get obsessed with some things, then feel betrayed if it gets taken away.

    2.  If the game sucks, then devs would rather hide behind an NDA.  I'm pretty certain that Sigil would have launched the retail Vanguard under an NDA if it was possible.  But that's not something we have to worry about here.  I've seen a lot on WAR so far, and everything points to a good, fun game.  It's obvious that Mythic is proud of their product, even this early in development.  And they feel they have nothing to hide.

    Seriously.

It's more like they HAVE to do it. Otherwise, the fans will go crazy with nothing to do but wait for the game. I know I will.

W eare getting lots of information and I dont blame them at all for limitiing what we find out. (for a couple of reasons)

First off if somethign is announced- then later sscrappped we get bombarded on every forum by the whiners.

Secondly, The really good ides - who's to say other game companies wont try to swipe them and get them into their games before WAR's launch (hasitly and perhaps bug ridden) giving that feature a negative cast and Making Mythic look like they were the ones copying the original idea/feature..

Openess in development would have avoided the debacle that was DDO.  Mythic has been so open, had they really humped the dog in some fashion, it would have been out for someone to catch and raise the alarm.

I've signed up for lots of MMOs newsletters in the past and at the moment I'm signed up for AoC and WAR, since those were the two games I've been watching for a long time.

I've been following WAR, since the Sept. before last when it was announced that Mythic was going to make it, and every single month without fail, the first thing I do as soon as the newsletter is announced is sit down and read every single last detail they throw out.

Getting AoC's newsletter every month is kind of boring, and I'm never looking forward to it.  This month their two "monsters" that they showed were a freaking python and a camel..... while the monsters that WAR showed were an Ogre Gorger, a Chaos Troll, a Tzeentch Horror, and a Tzeentch Screamer.  Not only are there more monsters shown, they're much more interesting.

In terms of class releases.  I KNOW that I'll be seeing at the very least some concept art about every new class that WAR goes in depth with.  They tell you How to play as the class, How to play against the class, and show you what you'll look like while playing the class.

The last couple months we even got to see some class animations.

I just think the sheer amount of info that is being put out for WAR dominates the competition, and the energy that the Dev staff carries with them from Con to Con as well as from Interview to Interview is awesome.  It feels like it's a group of my friends making a game, not some corporate group that tries to use buzz words and marketting hype to get me to buy the game.

The amount of screenshots and concept art and videos that are out there about WAR is comparative to the amount of text that's out there about AoC.  It just makes you go "No matter what they put in the next newsletter I know it'll be damn fun."

EDIT: To Dnomsed, I always preffered the phrase "Screwed the Pooch" as opposed to "Humped the dog"  It's more fun to say. :)
