The ultimate MMORPG?

I am what you call the hardcore MMO gamer, I enjoy almost only MMO's and will probably do in the future too. Now we have come to the age when all game developers drop one MMO after an other. World of Warcraft was the first, really big hit and now we have more games coming that will compete for the throne as the most sold and played, like Warhammer Online and Age of Conan.

My question to You is, what is the ultimate MMO? All opinions are welcome.

I'm looking for a game that has great depth in its lore, a crafting system that doesn't take 1 hour to master with the right materials and ofcourse a flowing, good gameplay. I don't care about any monthly fee cost, I'm glad to pay 15$ a month for a  good game.

Post links, screenshots, or anything else that might convince me to start playing the game you post.

due to the fact that everyone has different likes and dislikes it would be very hard to make the perfect mmo.  but in my opinion Age of Conan would be the closest thing to it if it lives up to the hype.  warhammer sounds pretty cool but it is not as good as aoc.  world of warcraft is ok but its too cartoony and they made it even more cartoony in burning cursade.

I totally agree on the WoW part :/ The game was at first really good but I've done almost everything you can do. I want a game that is more challenging and makes you want to explore more. The world in WoW is too small also, with my epic mount and all the flight paths it got reaaally small.

LOTRO  Currently in Beta but soon yo go live. Shaping up to be a good game.  Only real problem is the lagg. There are some other issues they may want to address befor long, but those are fairly minor for now.

If you want a game with great depth and history then Everquest is the game for you.  With new expansions and updates downtime (EQ's worst fault) has been lowered, Graphics have been updated and are not cartoony like WoW, aand with depth comes many different choices like the 16 different classes and 16 different races, many different starting cities and many different paths that you can take to become the best player possible.  Everquest also has a great community, along with its sequel EQ II which would be another good MMORPG even though i feel EQ is the better of the two.

How is the gameplay style in EQ? Is it like WoW where you can run freely or is it "click to move"?

It is a run freely game with the arrow keys or any keys u want for movement.... all things on interface (such as spells skills and abilities) can be reached by keyboard shortcuts, or u can just click on them; like WoW.... One difference with this is EQ is primarily a First person game unlike WoW that is third person.. then again EQ has multiple views by pressing the F9 button and u can play in third person as well even though, personally, i find first person to be better because you dont have your body in the way of targeting things

There is no ultimate MMORPG, the only people who say different are retards and people who have taken too many business classes in college

OK, something less abrasive.  The nice answer is, the ultimate MMORPG is what your dream MMORPG is.

--My ultimate MMORPG is a cross between Eve, *Original SWG, and some other stuff I want but have not seen yet.

*The current SWG is an abomination, a crime against MMORPG development and customer relations, a travesty, and just plain sucks.

--In MMORPG's l007 is the opiate of the masses.
--The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence!
--CCP could cut off an Eve player's fun bits, and that player would say that it was good CCP did that.

if you never have played everquest you may love it when you first play it.... However I am gonna warn you about it right off the bat the leveling in the game is very long and tedious and if you want to level at a good speed you'll need to group too... unless somethings changed I haven't played for so long >_<. Anyway it was an awesome game for me back in the day and if you never played it you may want to check it out its got huge zones and lots of places to explore. EQ however is an older game and has lost a lot of its player base and im not sure how many players are left but I doubt its an absolute graveyard.... besides if the new mmorpgs don't satisfy people maybe they will start to think about going back to their roots >_<.

Haha, I know what you mean, I played SWG for ages before they screwed the game up. I cried blood when they wanted to make it more WoW-like.

There is no such thing as the ultimate MMO, it's just too hard to create.

If it was possible I'd look for things such as:

    * Huge Explorable World- an evolving & dynamic world, not a static one.
    * Questing- Dynamic Quests with as much emphasis on small party quests as on raids of not more than 20 players.
    - Solable, Small Party (5-15 players) quests available at all levels.
    - Ability to solo at least 50% of time, 5 party quests 90% of time.
    - Medium & Large Raid quests available for those who want to partake.
    - Instances should be the exception not the rule at all levels of the game.
    - Avoids excessive grinding.
    - A variety of meaningful, unique, and challenging quests for the most part avoids the kill and collect grind.

    * More emphasis on exploring and less on rushing to reach the level cap.
    - I realize players decide to rush to the top but could there be game mechanisms that reward you just for exploring? Maybe some large instance spaces (Guild Wars) where a party of 5 (or less) could explore just to see the wonders of the world and find good loot along the way, with no particular quest in mind? Note: I don't care for GW because all quests are done in instanced space, a personal preference.

    * Epic Loot available in a variety of locations (not just the large raid locations).

    *Casual Players supported.
    - An avenue for casual game play.
    - Is there a way casual players could compete head on with hard core players in PvP? Prol not.
    - Could there be other ways?

    * Professions/Craft System that produce items that are actually valuable
    - In depth, but reasonable craft system- the ability to build structures (Tale in the Desert) and change face of virtual world.

    * A place in the MMO which you can call home- build structures? Dynamic quests that pop up in your home zone?
    * 3rd or first person view from any angle. (all though for situational awareness I'd never choose First Person)
    * Built in Voice Comms (for those that want to use it)
    * PVP zones on a PVE server- when you cross the line be ready to fight...why not?
*WoW's Loot System- It's very fair, it has options, "round robin", "group loot", "roll for need", "roll for greed".

    -----------------------
    Past MMOs- Planetside, WoW.
    Current MMO:
    Current Games: L4D, Skyrim
    Tried- ATITD, EQ2, SoR, Vanguard,SL,LOTRO,SotNW,SWTOR.
    Anticipating- GW2, Planetside2

EQ was the game in its time, but not now. Once EQ fell into the hands of SOE the glory that was an awesome MMO quickly evaporated into the hum drum of what is today's MMO uniformity, level grinding and mass raiding. Conan does look promising, but I'm not sure it will have the 'substantive' element that makes for a true 'in depth' MMO, however I am looking forward to it.

That having been said you can't imagine my disappointment with Vanguard, to think this was The Great Brad that created EQ.

The cartoony element never really bothered me as I though the richness, warmth and vibrant color made up for the new plastic shinny reflective effects you see in the newer graphics. WoW had a wonderful sense of belongingness, community and so many players made the world seem genuinely alive.
