Everyone is looking for a different playability.  This game definantly has a niche market.  I played the BETA and then never went to the store to finalize the sale.  A hack and slash at best.  I have to admit the graphics are excellent, the engine is superb and several other games could learn from it.  Not the game for me, but I know several folks are enjoying it.

I started playing the game on Friday and thought "this is a cool fun game"

It is very easy to pick up and play

Fun can be had with low characters instead of the usual have to get to 50 ala daoc and have the most uber loot just to be able to start having fun.

There are no hang ups about not having equipment and loot worn by older power gamer players....theres no loot at all.

But by Monday i've realised i will just move from zone to zone hittting stronger mobs as my toon levels. By exploring ...okay getting lost, i found new zones populated by first level 10 mobs..then a zone with level 20's, next by level 30's.....you get the idea.

The variety in character creation is amazing....but i don't feel the urge to continually follow the game through the same route for each character.

If i didn't have a real life mate on coh i would have probably cancelled my account by now.

i was in beta for about 5 days, by the last day i didnt even log in. personally its to simplified of a game.. the char creation was awsome but thats probably where i spent most my time lol.  the gameplay is ok but there is nothing after the 1st 14 levels worth going for... there is no end game, there is no real way to improve your char like health, defense ,strength you say its in form of infuence but all influence are is a potion you use it, you get bonus to health defence accurace or strenggth for about 15-20 seconds.. thats not enough for me.

Have you even played COH? I hate it when somebody obviously hasn't even played a game (or played just enough in order to trash it and go back to their old MMORPG grind in EQ or whatever else...)  I see so many posters just spewing junk based on what they *assume* a game is like based on what they maybe briefly read on forums or casually overheard in a conversation...

#1. In COH, "money" = "influence".  You gain influence when you save civilians, defeat mobs, and complete missions, and you can use influence to buy enhancements and inspirations at stores or from contacts... Later on (after the first months update, players will also be able to trade influence to alter costumes / buy new costume options as well

#2. There ARE rare drops.  True, this game does not emphasize loot.  In fact there are no "items" exactly, but rather enhancements that you slot and combine in your powers to customize them or increase their various attributes (eg. range, damage, healing, duration, recharge, etc.)...  The drops (when you kill a mob or save a civilian) come in the form of Enhancemets (which upgrade your powers / skills), and Inspirations (which are the "potion" like temporary powerups that the quoted poster mixed up with "influence")  There are three types of enhancements, of which the rarer ones are much more effective: 1. Training Enhancements (which do their own level in enhancement, and are useable by everybody... The common ones) 2. Dual-Origin Enhancements (which are origin specific to two particular origins, and do twice the enhancement that Training enhancements do), and 3. Single-Origin Enhancements (only useabe by one origin, these are the most rare, and also the most expensive to buy and you can only buy them in higher level stores... They do 2 times the enhancement that dual origins do, or in other words, 4 times the enhancement that training enhancements do)

By eliminating loot, everything is shifted to customizing skills (powers).  It fits the genre because superheroes do not typically run around looting thugs corpses, or buying uberarmour that will make them more powerful, or selling the things they've stolen off defeated criminals... Rather, superheroes gain experience, and "influence", and improve their own skills / powers... Your powers do a variety of different things, probably more than any of your "loot" would do in an item driven MMORPG, and your costume is much more customizable than armour so you're completely unique in appearance (without having to grind for hours to get money, and dye your new armour a new colour, or find a cool looking helm to match...) In my opinion, this eliminates alot of what made item driven MMORPGs boring and tedious... The fact that many Item Driven MMORPGs keep your interest by feeding you new "item carrots" that force you to forever grind a bit more to search for that ever desirable but never fulfilling item that will *presumably* make you more UBER than the next guy... To me, that is not fun... And new items are not really new content... They are cheap easy ways out of providing new gameplay experiences, and *fun* to keep people interested... (it's like the devs don't have enough content to keep players interested, so why not throw them another bone / carrot to hunt for, not that it will make them happy, or have fun, but at least it will make anybody who doesnt have that carrot have less fun... :p

Yeah rup I pretty much did the same.  Had access to beta for about 3 weeks but lost interest after a couple of days.  I believe there is an awesome game here for the right type of player.  Unfortunately I am not one of them.  This is by far the best game currently on the market so you yourself might wanna give it a whirl.

The most annoying shortcomings of this game basically entail 2 things(for me):

    1) Lack of loot.  Yes there are inspirations and enhancements but they are all the same just leveled.  That makes about 40-50 types of things mobs will drop the entire game.  Cannot play 3/4 of the way thru the game just to get an artifact.  I do not know how the devs could enhance this area the way the system is currently set.  Again....do not know why but the lack of nothing to get from neighborhood mobs and most boss mobs for that matter just kills the experience for me!  Generic from beginning to end.  Great story arcs and missions though image

2)There is just simply not enough abilities for each archtype.  I felt very very constrained in developing my character.  Yes they have some awesome superhero powers and sweet graphical effects to back them up but I think this area is a lot shallower than people are making it out to be.  Again....something just felt totally wrong with this part of the game.  The devs did a heck of a job with what is there but I do not see ample diversity no matter which archtype you play.  Yes each archtype pretty much distinguishes itself from another archtype in types of powers BUT this is the only difference.  All characters eventually level and are able to add an extra slot to a power and when this happens it feels like nothing ever actually changed.  This causes the already shallow power diversity to multiply tenfold.  Some may like it but I find it utterly boring and disappointing.

Even though I was allowed to beta for three weeks prior to release I was unable to upgrade any of my characters past level 11.  Yes I know that is not level 40.  The boredom was just to much to handle and I only ended up playing for about 6 days.  Yes this is a short time.   But in my 25 years of playing games not one reeled me back in after this type of boredom set in.  I found myself thinking man this is such an awesome game why is it so boring for me?  Besides the couple of points made above  (which are really not that bad to many players) I do not have the darnedest clue why this game became suckified in such a short period of time???  I did not level to 40 and get a cool artifact or finish a story arc but the game itself was unable to keep my interest to make it to such a point.  After all these years waiting to play this game I ended up playing for 6 friggin' days...lol.  In the end though I think the devs did an absolutely impeccable job with this game!!!  They communicated with their community a %1000 better than any other devs I have seen.  All of them should feel great satisfaction knowing that game information was perfectly timed and greatly stated.  So happy but yet so sad.

But sorry just not my cup of tea! image

Its all a matter of taste and personal opinion no person is right or wrong.

I would say if you fancy something different then give it a go as its fresh and fun.

For me tho I have had the game a week and I have no real urge to play it, I think im getting to old for MMORPGs now cos each one I try lately I loose interest quicker and quicker.

Oh and to the guy who said anyone who hasnt got a char past 20 there opinion is worth squat, why is it worth squat?  You can see in the manual what your powers are gonna be, fair enought different mobs maybe different strategies but it is still repetitive(well at least the missions for me that is).
