Lawl at the double exp

Well im currently a business major in college so i took the time to really think why they would give double exp. Ive come to the conclusion they looked at the few days with the highest in game population and highest subscription ending dates. A funny thought though is this. 2x exp would make the game more fun. Hence making it a big deal, doing it on the weekend, and advertising for it. So why the F dont you make the exp faster ALL the time. You wanna make real world money dont you sigil??? If you disagree with me youre not a business minded person. Anyways...i had a couple days left on my buddy key so i figured if 2x exp would make the game worthwhile. Nah i played for about 2 hours, got level 8, saw 1 other human player who didnt respond to my repetitive hello's and said id rather go get banned in some counterstrike servers for my lewd sprays and trash talking. Way to keep the game immersive sigil...way to keep the game immersive.

You've nailed it!  I've seen this course of action before and it is basically saying, "Please don't quit on us!  Look!  Let's have a fun weekend together and I swear you will love me again!"

That is THE dumbest "Business Minded" statement a Business Major could make. As a Junior Exec I can say for certian you don't set the standards for being "Business Minded", and I sure don't. Two suggestions I have, take them or leave them:

    1) Don't knock a Strat, even if it looks a bit silly. Off the top of my head, for example:

    a) If they increased the XP for kills to double, it may cause problems if they chose to do so again, stopping them from offering the "special" again.

    b) It would also greatly increase the speed that players would reach max level, shortening the play cycle for players and possibly loosing customers.

    c) Or Sigil is just short-sighted...

    2) Don't insult folks for no reason. You never know who's out there, maybe even a new networking contact. Why burn bridges BEFORE you get to them?

That's all. I'm not saying I don't agree with you, just that nothing in a Strat is ever simple, and you never know who disagrees with you...

I'll start my own SWG... with Black Jack... and Hookers!!!

    In fact, forget the SWG!!!!

Having to up xp gain to make the toy fun again is bad in my book. Yet if you look on the boards and see topics like Vanguard appreciates its customers! it's astonishing how people are attached to something. A desperate fight to not let the "gem" fail.

The bonus is well placed if you take into account what you said, Rover64dd. I quite agree with you.

In the end VG is on the road of faith as far as I see it. The most rational argument so far was: Try it in 6 months earliest. Also the special titles if you sign up till end of march(?) is giving another hint.

We'll see what is to be in the near future.

For someone with a business degree (EDIT - Working towards a business degree), I think you've missed it.  Double xp doesn't make the game fun.  In fact, more xp just means you "beat" the game all the faster.   There is no race to the end.

The key to making the game more fun is to make the player completely forget about xp all together.  Make the game engaging and immersive enough that the amount of xp you get is irrelevant.   Any company that can do this has a winning business model.

  • NevarionNevarion Member Posts: 274
Sure Deathstrike2 but the point of it all is binding customers as for what you said how it should be isn't the case. Hence the origin of the OP point of view even if a short term conclusion at the bottom line.

Double xp, special titles and other stuff is in my opinion to keep the customer base happy and tied to the product.

I think there are several components to why they gave double xp.

    1. One is a carrot to keep people playing after their free month is set to expire.

    2. A second reason is there are a fair number of fence sitters out there; i.e., people who haven't decided whether to play or not yet, and this could draw some of them in (so they buy before they miss out on double xp).

    3. A third is to placate that portion of the population that is frustrated by the state of the game.

    4. A fourth is to get people a little more advanced and into content Sigil thinks they will enjoy more, so they don't base their decision on whether to keep playing based on the very low level gameplay. And also, it gives them more of an investment into their charaters. It's harder to abandon a level 20 character than a level 5 one.

    5. And of course it gets the game some more publicity.

It should be interesting to watch the self styled "hardcore" reaction to this, in what is surely the first of many moves to bring the game into the mainstream to salvage subscriptions.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

    1. I can knock any strat i dont like.

    b. Youve missed the point of the MMORPG. Unlike Half-life the game is unbeatable. End game is often the highlight of MMO's.

    2. I can insult whoever i dont like.

and by business minded i meant profit oriented. WoW is profit oriented. Tons of subscriptions, main stream entertainment, etc. If youve noticed the trend with all forms of entertainment the mainstream hollywood big guns lots of action movies greatly outprofit small Indy type movies. Business minded = search for greater profit. I think you above anyone here know that the opportunity cost of creating and indy type game rather than a mainstream fun for everyone type game is huge at best.

Or maybe they just wanted to do something nice for their players on the 1-month milestone.

Maybe you just have to not be retarded to see that.

Your first sentence is a fragment and your second sentence ends with a preposition. Are you also a business major?

LOL is the acronyn which has spawned a new word to the english language "lawl."  Although I dont agree with the OP its obvious the author is more in touch with the current form of English language than you are.

Back on topic, sort of. There are many of us in game who actually believe the levelling rate in VG is far too fast already; and yes I did less adventuring this weekend because of this event. Even so I got my main 2 full levels (20/21) and 2 new characters to 8 and 6 in a total of about 5 hours.

Blurr has it.   I think it was just a "Thank You" from Sigil to those people who are going through a rough time for the game right now.  I don't think you should read more into it.

Now on a separate note, I find it very interesting to contemplate how much XP they should give to players to make them enjoy the game and feel they are progressing.  They have to cater to both the hardcore and the casual so picking this balance must be tricky.

I wonder are they using some elaborate data mining tools to figure that out.

In a competative market, making another WoW is pointless. Making niche games, and Target Market games, is the best way to ensure a solid market strategy. That's why Coca Cola sells dozens of different Sodas, and not just Coke. What's easier, cost effective and more likely to succeed? A Coke Killer or a Sprite Killer?

Speaking as a code monkey...I can think of a perfectly good reason to put up double XP...proof of concept. Now that they know they can do it, they can put it up whenever. They also have a degree of confidence that if they do have to throw it on in an emergancy, they wont screw the pooch further, thereby pissing off people even more.

So in short, the only answers are negative towards sigil and show that the game sucks? Can't you even pretend to be objective ever?

They gave double exp this weekend as a thank you for everyone who is continuing to play the game they released too early. Next.
