Not constantly no... But I leave games and then come back if they are good enough. Mechwarrior games.. Anarchy Online... But play one game for ten years and ignore the hundreds of pearls released during that time? Never
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force"
I could play the same mmorpg for 10 years. Heck I think I could play the same game for the rest of my life if it was good enough.
But it would have to be a very good game. A persistant world that feels like a world. Not a linear progression grind. Very sandboxy but without forgeting to have fun gameplay. It would have to be much more dynamic than existing games. A world that develops it's own history as it goes along.
Basically, if someone took the dream game in my head and turned it into a real game then, yeah, I would happily play it for the rest of my life.
Yeah, same for me. Sure THE game definition is quite vague but if my criteria are fulfilled I could imagine myself playing even more than 10 years.
Questions is why I quit my previous games. If for a certain game the answer can't be given anymore aka the issues I have with certain game are not existent... well then!
If the MMO companies changed the way they ran their games I probably could. They would have to drop the practice of making sequels and stick to investing in their current title: monthly updates to the story line and periodic facelifts to keep the game looking modern. I can't imagine them doing that though. They like to make the big splashes with new titles and expansions.
Playing a game for 10 years sounds scary but if you found a game that made you feel like the first time you played UO, SWG, EQ etc, you would be happy to live in that world for a long, long time.
Even singleplayer games like deus ex, half life, had stories, worlds, you could be happy to live in year after year . One day i hope they create a MMO that you can grow with, they can have my money happily.
That is why I think back to the Paper and Pencil days. The experiences were always new and fresh. The MMORGs that are offered today miss the boat when it comes to the experience. If you could develop a convincing on-line world with enhancements from player developed content and the development team keep pace with enhancements to the actual engine. I think the developers loose site of the forest through the trees and go after balance issues, etc.
I think anyone could as long as it was good enough. (For most people the game would have to have a way of never getting stale, boring, or repetitive.)
Such a game probably won't ever exist though.
No doubt, there have been games as amazing as such....but they are always ruined by the dreaded PATCH.
Look at Ultima Online. Used to be amazing. Now it has ninjas, samurais, necromancy, and a completely new system.
Games will be made that are amazing, but when it comes down to it, MMO's will always get ruined because the companies will upgrade the game to something worse than the original.
Let's add Trammel to Ultima Online!
An upgrade that ruined the game.
Sure you can upgrade a game consistently, even change it entirely, and still have it be absolutely amazing, but usually game companies only succeed on the first go around, never the second, and absolutely never the third.
Same for Movies. The sequels never do the original justice. Many times it's the same with video games, although not always. Whether it's #2, #3, an expansion pack, or a major patch, game developers......well to be honest most of them SUCK. They lack the skill, knowledge, experience, and intuition to be great.
Just look at MMO's in general. In fact, look at console games too.
Grand Theft Auto was a success! Let's copy it and make games equal to, crappier than, or a tiny bit better than it!
Everquest seemed successful, let's copy it to the T.
WoW seemed successful, let's copy it too!
Game Developer #1: Let's steal ideas from everyone else because I lack the creativity to think for myself!
Game Developer #2: Let's do something original, but I lack the skill and intelligence to make it high quality!
MMO Game Developer: I know there are 4 extremely big flaws in my game that keep it from being the best it could be, but instead of fixing those 4 flaws, I'm going to upgrade the UI and add 3 new monster skins to the dungeon that is so bugged no one can enter it!
Game Devs rather steal other's ideas and never have any of their own, or they have original and good ideas, but don't have the skill to do it good enough.
What the heck is wrong with game developers? Are they all retarded? DO THEY EVEN PLAY THEIR OWN GAMES?
As long as a video games are under the influence of MONEY, they will never reach their true potential.
The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil.
From what I understand UO is going to be 10 years old, Not sure how many people have been playing from that start that are still on but I am sure there are some.
Currently I'm playing Wow and having a good time. I just got my 3rd level 60 yesterday in fact. My ultimate goal is 5 level 70 characters with all primary professions of 375. I figure that will take a total of 40 more days /played. This seems to be about 8 more months based on the amount of time I play. What I'm going to do after that, I have no idea.
On to the topic. playing the same game for 10 years. LoTR is coming out very soon. They have a pretty good deal it seems on pricing. The pre-order special is interesting. Something like, pre-order the game for $50 and pay an additional $199 for a lifetime subscription. I calculated that it would cost about $1.86 per month if the game stays alive for 10 years. This is an interesting idea, because I could always logon, even if I have another subscription like WoW or another game, if I needed a break or just a change. No credit cards, no subscription cards, ever.
$1.86 a month for a lifetime membership to a game that costs 9.99 a month to play. Not too bad. However, the game has to be around for 10 years. That would be 2017. Assuming they do not raise the subscription rate ever, it would cost 1200 to play the game for the same 10 years. Saving $1000.
I think I could have played SWG in its original form for 10 years if they hadnt screwed it up. It was very open ended and let you constantly change your character. Could have been another UO if they had stayed true to the original vision.

I see no reason why any1 wouldnt play a game for 10-15 years. All it takes is to have a game that can fit into various schedules and demands. A game with good crafting, good combat, great (and meaningfull!) PvP, good graphics, streaming updates to keep pumping in new content and MOST IMPORTANT a good, no, a GREAT developer with endless money supplies to keep the new content well designed, well polished, well balanced and on time.
I think atm Vanguard comes closest to this type of game, it has Adventuring, crafting and diplomacy as a fulltime activities. They arent as balanced as Id hope them to be (up to your own opinion though) but if they were balanced, you could theoreticaly spend years playing this game becuase once u get bored adventuring, you could switch to crafting for a few days/weeks, then diplomacy, then back to adventuring. Throw in housing and guild management and you have a game that (potencialy) does not bore you for a long periods of time... if only Vanguard wasnt released too early and mising so much content and polish... Thats why great developer with endless money supplies is very VERY important.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
I could play the same game for 10 years, as long as it was paid for by someone else But seriously, 10 years isn't all that unheard of, this is creepy, but my friends 40 year old dad plays Everquest 2 from like 12 to 4 in the morning, gets an hour of sleep, goes to work, comes back late and does it again. And again. And again. He LOVES Everquest 2, and has been playing it since day 3. That is dedication, and if I had a game that was like that for me, then I would play it for 10 years no problem.

To name 1, i am still playing Might and Magic 7.. Best game EVER.. The graphics suck, yes.. But it OWNS
Not sure how long its been out, but i think i know every crank of that game, and i still find it amusing and cool.
