what would you like to see in an mmorpg

zarakzarak Member Posts: 1

What are your favorite aspects of a fantasy based mmorpg?  What other aspects not currently in most mmorpgs would you like to see in the future?  Would playing a non combative role in an mmorpg appeal to you?  If so what kinds of noncombative characters would you be interested in?

Well, to be honest, my favorite aspect of a fantasy-based mmorpg is roleplaying.  If it were possible, I would like to see rewards for roleplaying.  It might add to one of the ways you could earn experience besides killing monsters, crafting, or questing.  Or maybe it would give you fame or something like that, depending on how you roleplay?  It would be nice to see a fantasy-based mmorpg where roleplayers could make an impact on the game, other than going around killing monsters and screaming "Foul beast, I smite thee!"

I tend to agree with Tymora on this one. The games that are comming out are excellent. And with a huge selection out and in the works for soon release a player can easily find the game that suits them. However  these games are usally called MMORPG...the RPG meaning Role Play Game...however most games are very lacking in the RP aspect of the game. I think Role playing should be more encouraged. I wouldn't expect players to run around saying 'Thee's and Thous', but players could at least put some effort into behaving more like the chars they portray.

WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY IS NOT A RACIAL COMMENT, I MEAN WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY!

Okay, after saying that, I would like to see some black character models in an MMORPG. Barely any I can think of that have black character models.

Competition and evolution are what matter, support, a feel of challenge and been heroic also does matter.

Combat with tons of mobs is the easiest way to bring some form of kind friendly cooperative competition, which is what I crave for.

An evolution(farming some will say) in which you get better and better and better and better and better, and always better.  No other system that crush that system (exemple: not giving everything to folks that raid if the focus is the group system for a player like me, but could be solo or even non-combat oriented).

Will I do some tradeskilling, unlikely, there is no thrill in it and the competition is not appealing to me, but who know, maybe if the fokls figure a nice system out...

I dont like to have to relly on other folks(raiding), but I can certainly handle 1 group of 6 or less...No ''bad consequences'' whatsoever from any other player that do anything on non-PvP servers, no rush to a mob, no camping, instanced zones, center everything on players themselves, I should not lose ANY option because of what someone else did, they could only improve my life(I prefer to limit it to the grouping experiment, and not opening stuff for the whole server, but whatever work here, as long as positive, but it suck to be on a server where nobody open anything, so leave it to a personnal level) or not change it.

What I would like to see in a mmorpg is a system where you actually do have to interact with others and not just a simple "hi" "by" deal. If the character doesn't interact with others there should be an insanity meter,Once it reaches zero he/she would start losing exp, health that sort of thing so then the community for the game would grow with interaction

That would be a GREAT feature, I will know from the start to not buy that game and waste my time there! :)

A good, no let me rephrase that, a non-mind numbingly boring combat system.  I have to disagree with UOAndrommie, I think the MMORPG genre at the moment is plain awful.  Each game that comes out seams to bit a little bit simpler, little bit more brain dead and a little bit worse than the last.

The only thing that seems to be seeing any note worthy advancement is the graphics.  Combat was a bit basic in the early days of MMORPGs but they haven’t added any real level of depth.
I'll compare Lineage 2 (I know one of the worst) with Asherons Call 1.  In lineage combat works this way:

    Melee

Target Mob, attack mob, use special attack, win/run away.

    Magic

Target Mob, cast spell, run away, cast spell, run away, repeat until you or the mob is dead.

In AC 1 (been a few years since I've played it mind)

    Melee

Target Mob, choose Weapon depending on mobs vulnerability (eg. Fire hammer for wood Gollum),  choose attack type depending on mob (choice of High, Mid, Low.  Best choice depended on mob type), win/run away.

    Magic

Target Mob, cast increase vulnerability spell depending on the mob, debuff mob, attack mob (spell type depended on mob, eg Fire Ball for wood Gollum).

I admit this is only a small extra level of detail but it required you new your mobs, there was a huge range of spells to learn and a large amount of weapon types (blunt, slashing, piercing, acid, electric, fire, ice).  I would of hoped this sort of thing was built on, not dumped and simplified.
I will no longer pay for a MMORPG that requires combat to advance if they are unable to make this combat fun and not repetitive.  If I wanted repetition I'd work in line production, at least it pays.

I fully agree with Magpie, unfortunetly almost all new games are repetitive (boring) as hell, fortunetly we have eve:)

I'd like to see a mmorpg with something else to do besides combat and crafting. Mosst mmorpgs have gotten the fight monster x times to level, and craft this x times down pat. Now they need to work on quest cause the last few mmorpgs I've played have had lackluster quest. Stuff like kill x number of creatures and come back" just doesn't cut it.

They want us to stay and play so they should make the game fun at every stage of the game.

The perfect mmorpg in my mind would be a game that had other stuff to do when you get tired of fighting or crafting. Ways to interact with the world and other players. Like say someone made Uber mmorpg, doesn't matter the setting to me as much but they have combat, and crafting but also they have recreational stuff as well. Like say bowling, golf, fishing, racing, and they also have an in game collectable card game. Ah they also have a guid system that allows for players to pool together and buy land and build on it. The guild leader can let players manage stuff on their own or he can toggle aan rts type interface and issue commands for people build here, gather resources, kill creatures here. This interfaceespecially comes in handy for guild wars. Players get rewarded for following orders by gettting points to earn guild titles or other benefits.

This game has a handful of races, but those races have been fully fleshed out with unique languages, and own style of weapons and armor. Crafters of a chosen race can craft their own stuff better than they can other races, but through hard work they can learn to craft other style of armor, and weapons. Learning multiple style of armor and weapons allows for that player to combine the different asthetic styles to create new unique looking stuff. Having some magical skill would in time allow for enchantments on said crafting materials.

Fighting wouldn't be level based but player sskill based, much like a fighting game is. Players can choose from many classes and as they level they get to pick claass or weapon specific powers or moves. How well the player larns these moves dictates how good they do instead of I'm high level so I can allways kill anyone 5 levels below me. Kinda like how Rune was, or a massively online soul calibur would be. No more click, hit the fight button and wait for your powers to cycle as you auto fight. Players with ranged attacks would have a 1st person perspective until they get into melee range.

Game A.I. should be able to handle perchers, and kiters. Also instead of just randomly scattered monsters waiting to be slaughtered sentient monsters would have their own towns wether it is above or below ground. The creaures would be scatterd varying distances from their towns. They would be doing specific random things like attacking npc settlements, killing wildlife, gathering resources, ect. So the player would come upon creatures actually doing stuff instead of just standing or roaming around a given place over and over. Sentient creatures would spawn in their cities, and if a group never reported back more creatures might come and investigate. Lone scouts might explore and observe players, or other npcs and if not caught report back and lead a rading party. The creature city itself could be attacked with either a powerful group or a large enough force. Under the right circumstance it could be occupied and turned into a friendly npc town, but it would have to always be on guard from the surviving former occupants, or their allies. The surviving creatures would set up a new town and it would grow the longer it was left alone.

Non sentient creatures would be random enccounters in their natural environment. I would try to get away from having creatures spawn in the same place over and over. Also much like faction if you have the right alignment you might be able to interact with normally agressive npcs.

There would be a pantheon, and the game staff would roleplay these on very rare occurences. Playing a priestly class would have certain bonuses and limitations depending on with God you worshipped ingame. Churches would have faction, and alignment that could be affected by player choices in game.

This game would also be pvp, but only from choices made ingame. It would be possible to play and not be involved in pvp, but it would require a certain playstyle. Like staying neutral in worldy affairs, or picking the right causes to champion.

Thiss game would be truly 3d, and you could fly and also travel below water. There would be dungeons, and towns in those environments that would require the right means of travel to see.

Not only could players own land they could also buy a ship, and this ship would be like a mobile house.

I could ramble on and on, and these are just ideas that I've come up with now and not fully fleshes out. Regardless I think they offer a fresh approach to a game that would keep me interested for a long time. It would come close to aproximatiing the pen and paper experience

I'd like to see more games that have a system like eq's. I mean their system of killing npcs and then they will hate ya, and everyone they know. I would like it to be different in a few ways though. The npcs die, and they stay dead, maybe they have a funeral in town or something, anyways, then a new one replaces them, and if say.. the bar keep is killing x so amny times, there isn't a bar keep anymore in that city. But there would have to be alot of cities for this to work, :O. Also, I'd also like to see a game with same type of thing, if you pk enough around a town, the guards will know your a pk, and keep you away. And the person you kill should give you a faction, like, maybe lets say, your a assasian, and you join the assasian guiuld in a particular town, they give you a mission to go and kill a member of the cleric guild to join, you not only get to join the assasian guiuld, but you get better faction with them, if you becaome a famous assasian, eventually the assasian guild will give you free stuff and such. I would also like to see a game where you can be a trainer... eq and other games made you have to run to a town to train, if you could just ask the assasian guild of your town if there are any masters near you, so you dont need to run abck to your guild to train. Also, your assasian guild could be raided by another town, or another guild in your town, and then that guild could be destroyed and all its members lost. Well, if ya wanna read what I wrote, go ahead, probably alot of mispelled words. :O

I kind of like the idea of a contentless MMORPG.  Kind of like how the show Seinfeld was supposed to be a show about nothing I would like to see a MMORPG about nothing.  The game designer could just concentrate on implementing a good set of rules, options, and customization and let the players create the content.  It is the one my biggest peeves about MMORPGs.  The designers never give players any power to do anything.  I think that rather than spend the time to create a huge plot or quest they could just drop in some powerful artifact and let a player find it and use it for good or evil.

I also like the idea of starting a game from the beginning.  All MMORPGs start out with premade towns, dungeons, and lootable monsters.  I like the idea of letting the players clear out areas and build cities/dungeons.  I also think it would be cool to implement what I call the Idea system.  All races would start out with very little tech and as players use skills they can randomly have an idea on how to do something better.  Only so many characters in game would get the idea.  Once x amount of people randomly get a certain idea it then opens to everyone.  Certain ideas would be limited.  As an example, one player in the game could be given an idea to create some powerful artifact that could in turn cause a major plot in game and would be the reason for the existence of the artifact even if the character that created it lost it or died a perma death.

Monsters could of course loot player corpses which would be how they would end up with loot.  Characters could also eventually be perma killed.  As a result the game would constantly change and eventually the game would get to a point that most other games start at.  I also think it would be cool to set up cataclysmic events in game that change most of the game world on a server.

This is all wishful thinking of course.

I like massively multiplayer...but I don't like the rpg part of it quite as much...or at least I don't like fantasy rpg a great deal. I like my games based more in reality or at least science ficiton...This is why I like EVE and The Matrix Online...

I would really like to see some sort of Massively Multiplayer Star Trek Game...

and on a completely different note....I want to see Crime Online...aka Grand Theft Auto Online...but only if it's possible to run your own gangs and fight over territory...similar to Planetside's system...just in a close to real life type setting.

kind of going along with what Magpie said...I'd like to see a mmorpg with a lot more depth to the combat system.

I'd like to see just about the entire idea of "improving your character" through Levels (or even 'skills' which take forever to increase) thrown out the window.

I think improving your character should come from playing the game and actually getting better at it, learning it's intricacies, improving yoru timing, working out it's strategies and tacticis. Rather then the current kill 10,000 more mobs and gain a level so your character is more powerful model. Who ever came up with the idea that character should go up levels and exponentaily increase in power should be shot.

Again agreeing with Magpie, it's sad that most games seem to be going the opposite direction. Dumbing the game down to the lowest level possible. The less there is to the game, the more they have to fall back on artificial challenges like camping mobs for hours on end to make the game seem like there's something to it.

IMHO the best part in an MMORPG is that it is an "Action RPG" type game. I can't stand just running up and pressing the attack button, but I love to strafe and jump and spin and all that goodness to dodge spells/missile attacks. I also feel that non-combative types should be able to increase their non-combat skills (however they should not be able to increase their combat skills since they are not participating in any sort of combat).

This will get some slams I am sure but read fully before slamming :)

I thought that SWG really made for a great new feeling "MMORPG" that allowed for a great PvP/roleplaying experience. Did I play for very long...NO...but I will back my opinion here.

First of all SWG was setup for partial failure with it catering to "very casual" players. I played a grand total of 2-3 months and had maxed out architect and polearm (I think that is what it was called). I know many people got bored becuase they could level to "end-game" way too quickly. Heck some of the hardcore people in the 2-3 months I played had already ditched some maxed out skills and gone and maxed out others. Leveling pace aside, there just wasn't a ton of built-in "game-driven" content.

Ok enough of the bad of SWG, now what I thought was very cool. The setting, player-made economy and mix of cities that was controlled by one faction or the other really made for some interesting roleplaying experiences for those that actually roleplayed in SWG.

As the 2nd or 3rd architect on my server that became a master I was constantly involved in speaking with other people just for business alone. The fact that I had put in a few hours hours led me to helping quite a few folks beyond my business. As I played a little more I really got into the spirit of the faction war and started denying business to anyone that was not a part of the Empire. This certainly starting leading to a reputation. My shop (luckily) was setup near my server's biggest guild, so I was fairly well protected by near-by patrols. Their master architect basically gave up doing business and they sent most of their high-end biz my way, which was great in my eyes ;)

The second thing that really made me love SWG (for a short time of course) was the fact that large numbers of players really role played the Empire vs Rebellion war very well. There were many times when I was personally and broadcast summoned to help defend one of our city or to aid in a raid on a rebellion city.  In any case, these battles were great and the posts on the offical forums regarding them were always in roleplay and very entertaining to read.

If SWG didn't level so darn fast and had some more content at release...I know that my friends and I would never had left...it really had some great stuff going for it...but it just had that major downfall for many hardcore players.

Is SWG the only game that had this kind of pvp roleplaying? I doubt it, but it was the first MMORPG that I was in that really brought the roleplaying and fun of PvP to my eyes. Even in EQ where people roleplay here and there just never got as immersive as SWG did for me.

I have played nearly ever other MMORPG made and I have to say the player community and roleplaying that I experienced for those 2-3 months in SWG is what I hope to experience long term again in a MMORPG!

I'd like to see a fantasy MMORPG where I feel like my character has some purpose. Many MMORPGs feel like you're just Guy # whatever number who can run around, cast spells and kill monsters. But I want it to be possible where a person could gain enough power that people would just look at him and say "Wow..."

Also, I'd like to see more roleplaying. I'm sick of this d00d crap, I want to hear people interact like they should be.

  • BrizahdBrizahd Member Posts: 60

Something I forgot but think would be cool is some kind of voice chat in a mmorpg. The key would be that you couldn't just hear everyone, but only within certain distance. The game could control the volume so people far off might only be barely a whisper.

I also dislike instant messaging, and server wide communication. I'd like fo it to require some kind of spell, or technology to allow you to talk across the world to someone. Wether it involves you having to scrye someone you know, or using a walkie talkie to contact someone. This would also add an element in that some people would use their magic or technoloy to listen in on other people's conversations. Might open up a cool market for information if it was done right.

Being able to mask, or somehow alter your voice on the fly like it does on the xbox would be nice. I could create my dwarf and then mess with the settings till I got the voice I wanted quite right.

I imagine much like how the ydo with names mods might have to alter people's voices if they made some that were just ear piercing or too annoying.

I could not have said it better.  I totally agree.  SWG is a roleplayers game, not for powergamers.

I agree to a point about the d00d chat. I don't feel "people should be acting a certain way" but rather I am very happy when a company provides both non-roleplaying and roleplaying servers.

Sometimes I like to roleplay a ton and other times I like laughing at all the d00d chat. Nice to have the option to do either. I think it is important to give each type of player the environment they really can enjoy. The hardcore d00ds and hardcore roleplayers seem to enjoy some differing play styles which really need their own homes.

I, too, would love to see an mmorpg where your character gets some kind of note-worthy rewards for staying in the Role-Play mode. Some of the stuff we see nowadays is nothing more than a giant chatroom. In my opinion, Titles like that shouldn't even be called RPGs.

A healthy game community, quality customer support, enough active ingame mods...those would definitely improve a lot of the current mmorpgs.

I also liked the idea about having different servers, for those who want to role play, & those who don't want to. That's definitely a cool idea.
That way, when we want to take a break from intense role-playing, we can switch servers & take a laugh break while listening to the infamous 'd00d' chats.
And the d00d chatters could also take breaks & come laugh at us role-players. ::::02::

I know some games have the characters get actual scars, to make it more realistic.
I'd like to see a game where how you play also affects the appearance of your character, & not just some battle scars.
For instance: If all you do is run around pk-ing, looting, etc; then your character could gradually evolve into a more sinister looking being, get horribly over-charged on goods at stores, find it increasingly difficult to get 'good' quests, heal slower, etc.
(picture dark, evil-glowing eyes, changes in hair, skin, &...muahahaha!::::23::)
If you're more into helping/protecting other players, crafting, sharing, etc; then your character gradually takes on a radiant glow, recovers faster after being hit, gets greatly reduced goods at stores, can tame & befriend creatures, etc.

Overall, I'd like to see a game that could really deliver on it's pre-launch hype; & hold our interests for more than a couple of weeks, or even months~the usual time when the boredom of treadmilling, poor community & customer service catches up to us. ::::28::

I would like to see role-playing rewarded in games too.

For example an orc would be rewarded for using force to obtain stuff rather than talking, for example going into a shop and demanding that shield for 1/2 price or he will beat the shopkeeper with a stick etc.

And a thief would be rewarded for staying in shadows, getting to know dodgy contacts and for STEALING stuff. Even if it is from other people. Maybe when the thief is killed the items will go into a lost property store to be reclaimed by their rightful owners.

Going into a tavern and bragging about your latest adventure would be rewarded. NPC's could hang around the bar and 'evesdrop' and those who do this would be rewarded. Dwarves would have drinking competitions, Priests could pray and meditate etc. Wizards could go into a library and read some books, which should be interesting enough for the player to actually read, and the character will gain xp.

Also characters like assassins would gain xp by killing without being seen, and by shunning contact with people, rather than socialising and mindless killing like most.

Rangers may have to spend lots of time in the forest.

There should be mini quests depending on your race/class which would allow you to get into character and teach you how to roleplay.

As well as rewards for roleplaying you should be PUNISHED maybe to the extent of being booted from the game, if you dont do this.

Also maybe you could choose a personality for your character. If you want to PK you could choose to be a murderer, you would get XP for killing and for not being caught. But you would get permadeath or something when finally killed.

    Just an idea

4 stars sucks :( i want my 5 stars back!

Good ideas bsherlockimage . I belief some mmorpgs are going to try and pull this off with skill based advancement rather than xp leveling, but rather or not it will be as extensive as your ideas, we'll have to wait and see.

Btw, bsherlock, I looked at the most recent info on Fable, and unfortunately, it is not going to be multiplayer imageand is going to be an XBOX exclusive game for right now.

I would like to see a game made that doesnt use the leveling treadmill system that 90% or more of all the games do. I really cant pick alot of differences out between most of the new games, because they all require "level 15 wizard looking for group".

That said i would like a game build kinda like on Old UO's skill and craft system. But with different races added. Territories for safe hunting, which involves 75% of the land, the other 25% all out race wars. In these 25% there would be sieges, land occupation all that good stuff.

In the other 75% of the land it would be awesome, player apartments in the city, you can only buy a big house if theres 10 or more people in a guild buying it. I think once a month one race could have the option if they wanted to attack the other races town. Just for one day, if they win, then they would collect a 10% tax from them for one month. Weeee. I wish i could make a game.

Each city would have elected officials, they could post there ad campains on the local billboards. If they win they could appoint a few of there officials, while the people voted in the rest. At the end of 2 months elections will be held. to keep them in or out. Officials could discuss alliances with races, with other elected officials. It would all be player determined.

I would have at least 1 if not 2 Roleplaying servers. Graphics would as nice as Lineage 2's. And have the ambient feel of EQ's dungeons. I would have a hit on my hands ")
