Alot of MMORPGs out there brag about being able to give us Epic PvP Battles ie 100+ players per side. From my experience with Shadowbane this is not the case, what we get is a massive lagfest, GPFs galore, low frame rates to the point of stand stills, lag deaths. These Battles lag the servers so bad that you know one is going on cause half way across the world mobs spawns freeze up.
So I ask myself are there any MMORGPs out there that truely can support these events or is it all hype?

I suspect Lineage II will have a special cluster of servers to handle castle sieges. Yet it hasn't happened yet so it is too early to say if lag will occur.
The real key to epic battles is to have dynamic loading in which the CPU load in a server cluster is dynamically balanced. EVE-Online apparently just put this in. Perhaps some EVE players can fill us in on how it is working.
The only land based MMOG that will have dynamic loading seems to be Dark and Light with their licensed BigWorld Technology engine that just became available during the middle of last year. This is one of the reasons I am really interested in this game.
Sometimes, it is better to say nothing at all. Cause big mouths results in big words, and big words travel like bacteria.

From what I've heard (never seen it), DAoC's realm vs realm battles get pretty big, I think that is around 100 or whatever.

I had quite a few such battles in SWG, all the rebel factions joining together and raiding imperial bases and vice versa.
The lag was chronic however and peopl died more times from going line dead than actually from being shot. I imagine if they can sort that problem out the battles will be a lot more fun. And the good thing was that everyone felt the need to join in, because imps really felt obliged to fight rebels and vice versa.
4 stars sucks i want my 5 stars back!
MUAHAHAHAHAHA
Yes eve dont have lag now but i need to wait for big event as this is true hardcore test for lag;) hundreds of players:)
about lineage 2 -> 2 weeks of repetitive slashing mobs to have fun for 2 hours in castle siege? nah its not for me;P
if its going to be lineage2 that has it then they have some work to do. right now if there are 25 ppl sitting in the town with there stores open its a lag fest like trying to get to the bank in UO
So far, no game I have Betaed or played was able to handle really large player concentrations (100+) while running at average for you system graphic and sound settings. Several though, have been able to handle large player concentrations when the detail levels were turned well below what one would normally play at.
In other words, if you turn all your settings to "stickfigures and blocks" mode you can engage in "epic PvP" battles provided you are running a high end machine, but if you have your settings on "16 bit sidescroller crap" you'll lag like a 386.

Stay away from Lineage ][ if you value your money. The PvP really isnt that good in that game and any die hard PvPer knows there's more things wrong with Lineage ]['s PvP system than the Peace Talks in Iraq.
Lineage ][: You can PvP till your blue in the face...you get no XP...however if you die, you loose XP. You can get an occasional drop, but if it's a consentiual PvP (purple rather than red) you hardly get any loot from the other guy.
If you're running after a red PvPer to take vengeance, he can simply log off...logging off in Lineage 2 is instantaneous (sp) so when they hit log off their off and you just missed out on a PvP fight.
You're better off browsing these forums for another PvP mmorpg. There's some decent ones out there. Lineage ][ isnt one of them
People who have to create conspiracy and hate threads to further a cause lacks in intellectual comprehension of diversity.
Lineage 2's open PvP would be alright, except that it punishes you for killing players around your own level, but has little consequences for lowbie killing.
"The body is but a vessel for the soul, a puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny. And lo, the body is not eternal, for it must feed on the flesh of others lest it return to the dust from whence it came. Therefore must the soul decieve, despise, and murder men."

dang... harsh yet effective. But I would say social outcasts instead of rejects since a MMO does require some social skills (yet for some of them out there I still wonder).
There are zones that will let you PvP without punishment or turning one red when Chronicle 1 comes I heard.
I dont know but i dont see how it could handle it. I remember in beta walking into Gludio with a
2.54 p4, 512 ram, 9700 pro and a very fast cable modem. Brought my system to its knees. Granted my system is starting to age a bit, but still that was probably 100 people maybe sitting around town. I couldnt imagine trying to pvp in that mess.
My Lineage 2 ultimate server
Roleplaying only server - no tards allowed
Exp grind cut in half - I dont want to grind if its not fun, im not going to play.
Add some more content, preferbly cooler dungeons and a better chat system...
Had these things i would be all over it, sad thing is i think alot of other people would to but do they listen?
I hear ya, 7fold, my system spec are similar to yours and Gludio also DE town did the same to me, my comp would come to a grinding halt with frame rates of 3 fps!
As far as NCsoft listening to the community I think they are deaf and dumb, we screamed at them all during open beta about Adena farmers, Bots and Ebayers but did they listen ... NOT ... this alone convinced me not to purchase this game.
I sincerely hope other developers and publishers out there open their ears and eyes. The ones that truly do will succeed. We the gamers want a level playing field, not to be out classed by folks buying items from Ebay. We are gamers not cows to be milked for monthly fees and then ignored.

There's only one place to find truly Epic PvP battles. And that's World War II Online. There's nothing else like it in existence.

Last memorable Epic PvP battles I can remember date back to my time in UO (Ultima Online). I believe it was '99 when I saw the beginning of the Color Wars which lasted a good month. It pitted 5 factions against one another and they all wore different colors. I was part of what would be "purple" and we often allied with "blue" against "red", "orange", and" green". There was a rogue faction though that later came about called the Nakids who pretty much wore nothing or random colors and fought anyone they saw.
The battles got pretty intense too. Often castle to castle fighting, I can remember holding the "gates" of the castle back many times with spells of fire wall, poison field, a few demons here and there, and the like. We had huge 100+ raids on other castles (and were raided ourselves) as well as house to house guerilla-style fighting that took place on the outskirts of our castle stronghold. I can remember us getting infiltrators at one point who marked runes (used to teleport to locations) right in a vunerable section of our castle. They then would give it to their own team who would open gates and teleport whole armies into our castle. Eventually the dust would settle, with us "purples" and "blues" loosing. All and all it was one of the best times I had in UO, and in an MMORPG as a whole.
I miss those days.
I must admit Neocron has the capacity for some pretty awesome large scale pvp. Not like 100's but 20 or so people on each side. Its an fps based rpg but its much different then like quake capture the flag or something.
I mean youve got like tanks spewing giant Area weapon fire, psi monks blocking entrances with electrical fields, Snipers skulking around invisible on roofs and moutains only appearing to take a few shots at an enemy soldier, deadly drones flying around in the air attacking people, People dancing around each other as if they were sword fighting except they have automated weapons. Then theres the healer type monks that can ressurect the dead and provide protection and healing so the fights could go on for a long time.
Unfortunately the game is really badly designed to get people to participate in these large scale fights so it almost never happens.
