Howdie folks!
I quit playing SWG slightly before CU, just the sound of it repulsed me! Time went on, not even a thought for the game! After just a year i began pondering on SWG's new features, what would it offer? Would it be the same? Will i enjoy it just as much as before? So, been the curious individual i am, i downloaded the 14 day trial.
Well... without sounding PISSED OFF, WHAT IN GODS NAME HAVE THEY DONE TO AN AMAZING MMORPG? As soon as i created my character, i was on edge. What will i see next?! A whole load of new proffessions?! Hundreds of new features?! Obviously, i was in denial. When the HELL did jedi become a beginners proffesion!? The amount of time me and thousands of players took grinding proffesions to unlock the famous force sensitive slot.. and BANG some fool thinks " NO, we NEED more money.. just hand the bloody jedi out, we'll be loaded old bean!"
I dont even know WHERE to start, i'm sure all this has been covered, i'm just an angry gamer wanting some answers. (Like many others!) Many people have claimed SOE were after more money, well sure.. they are! But why would they ruining a perfectly amazing game and lose thousands of players? The old, classic SWG was extremely fun to play, especially from launch. fair does the bugs were crazy, but the game was fun to play! When did beginners become rich? A few missions into the game i was loaded! It's been said many times, but SOE seems to be aiming for the "young" audience. So they can run around with thier bright, glowing and dangerous light sabres and feel special! In the good old days, jedi were pretty rare, people would surround them and admire thier abilities, you would often come across players asking "What proffession did you unlock on?" I dont want to rant on, but you know where i'm coming from, it's simply deranged to be blunt! Theres many people out there claiming the servers are become "more populated"..... MY ARSE! The good old days, PvP everywhere! Traders selling thier goods! Entertainers dancing, docters healing! What do we see these days? Absoluetly nothing! I dont intend to go on, and i am sorry, i just need to vent somewhere, like many others!

bud... i miss it just as much as you, i was elder jedi and stuck with the game all the way though the CU and quit the day the NGE was announced...
i miss SWG more then any other game... i feal sry for the ppl that didnt get to expirence THE BEST GAME EVER MADE!
no joke, SWG was the best game ever made, it was just porly managed by F*ck Bag Julio and Smed.
I'm just curious does the 14 day free trail let you off of the space station now? Granted you would have seen the same nothing on the planets but if you were just on the noob station you probably would see even less.
SWG was a great game but it was so buggy, flawed, and unbalanced it was probably doomed to go down the crapper anyways. The NGE was just the flush of the toilet. Since SOE never had a clear direction for the game it was impossible to fix anything. Even when they tried to fix a bug or two they would usually screw up more than they fixed. Patch after patch it was a nightmare. If nothing else SWG proves that you need direction and you can not have alpha classes in a mmo. Just the thought of playable jedi in the game was bad. They should have been left for boss fights and NPC's. Oh well none of it really matters now the game is a joke.
FoE
"Our Enemies are sacred cause they make us strong."
SOE/LA were losing subs and believed that SWG could be like WoW. What resulted from their belief was this abomination.
--When you resubscribe to SWG, an 18 yearold Stripper finds Jesus, gives up stripping, and moves with a rolex reverend to Hawaii.
--In MMORPG's l007 is the opiate of the masses.
--The absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence!
--CCP could cut off an Eve player's fun bits, and that player would say that it was good CCP did that.
Well the New Iconic Star Warsy Housing purge and Server merges are coming!!! That means more players dont it??And the posts praising the Devs for the new CH and the New server merge and purge boggles the mind. But i just dont see paying for a turd wrapped in SW toilet paper is a good thing..Why play a product thats worse than what it was before??
I usualy don't think about it... But yesterday they were playing SW movies on TV... Just when I heared that music that was played on loading... Oh man. Damn you SOE/LA! Damn you...
I hate to watch them anymore just because the music reminds me of planets or special places I loved to visit, it just makes me sick.

I totally agree. The hum of a light sabre igniting sings "suckkeeer" to me. And the the duel, chants "we", "ripped", "you", "off"
I wouldn't have thought it possible for anyone to ruin Star Wars for me, but SOE/LA did it.

Well with the way Lucas rewrote the original trilogy can we all really say we are totally surprised with what has happened to swg?http://www.speedtest.net/result/7300033012
One has to wonder how "amazing" SWG was if you quit playing it!
Look, I hate the NGE as much as the rest of everyone else, but unlike most of the nay-sayers, I actually gave the CU a chance before I started whining about it (and quitting before it came out) and I gave the NGE a chance before I started whining about it (and quitting before it came out).
(Editorial, I don't think the CU was really that bad, it was in better shape then the Pre-CU and aside from the additions of Combat Levels and a few profession tweaks (healing was over powered) it was pretty good - I think)
But I am getting a bit tired of all these "AMAZING PRE-CU GAME" post. The FACT is that SWG PRE-CU was not amazing, it was not perfect, it sucked! It had potential to be a great game, but it was horribly unbalanced, lacked content, and was bugged to high heck! So to refer to it as anything close to "amazing" is simply a gross misstatement of the facts and it is these types of melodramatic overstatements which lead to the NGE.
How can we (as a player base) expect SoE (as much as I hate them for mismanaging SWG) to pay attention to what players want and say when the players have no grasp on reality? If I was SoE and all I heard was how AWESOME the Pre-CU was (when I know that it was not great based on subscriptions dropping like third period French and comments about the game before the CU) then I would ignore them as well.
You cannot expect to get a good revamp when you don't have a realistic grasp on what the problems are. Don't get me wrong, I doubt SoE would have gotten it right, but the CU was a step in the right direction so at least they showed some potential to do the right thing. The problem that killed the CU was the whining Jedi that quit the game before it even came out because they lost their "I win" button.
Now, I can understand the frustration because they "worked hard" (ie spent lots of hours playing the game) to get a Jedi and then get NERFED to high heck (welcome to SWG!). But, the bottom line is SoE screwed up when they forced Jedi out and the NERF was needed. You may hate it, but it is true.
But the unwillingness of the player base to face the facts that the population of Jedi was way out of control and the overpowerment of Jedi was also way out of control is what doomed the CU and forced SoE to give up on the existing player based and move toward the NGE.
You want to blame someone for the NGE, blame all the players that quit the Pre-CU before the CU came out. Blame all the players that whined about the CU and quit without even giving it a chance. Blame all the players that never really gave the CU a chance and quit out of selfishness and spite. In other words, blame yourself!
Those are my thoughts.

i think u missunderstand us when we say "AMAZING", this is because, what we meen by AMAZING is that the game drove are life! we couldnt sleep at night because we were playing the game, we were surrounded by the best story ever told, Star Wars! And if you look at it the way you do, yes it was buggy and needed a lot of work, BUT! there is no game out there that, 1.) was so emersive in a world that ppl loved, Star Wars, 2.) there was no other game loved as much as SWG, and 3.) the game was AMAZING. it had the best community then any MMO ever created, and the resen for that was, everyone had 1 main char. so everyone knew everyone. ppl may say that everquest is the best mmo ever, BS everquest was crapy compaired to SWG. nuf said...
i speak for everyone that ever played SWG when i say, "I have never, and will never, ever, have as much fun as i did in Star Wars Galaxies. I will never LOVE another MMO like i did SWG and will never feal the same about Star Wars...Never..."
.. it was a mistake.

After the attempt at copying WoW's combat system (the CU) failed to attract WoW's playerbase, the folks at SOE decided to focus more on copying Planetside's combat system (the NGE) and therefor success. They have been wildly successful at this new goal, but there are still some folks who continue to subscribe to the game because of the whole "Star Wars" thing. Rest assured, SOE has their best and brightest minds working on driving the subscription numbers towards Planetside's level. They know that nobody plays Planetside for things like reading or complexity, so they quite rightly got rid of those things.
Sadly, the changes in pricing of the Station Pass will affect Planetside's playerbase numbers, so the folks at SOE are going to have to work that much harder for SWG to match them. I for one, have full faith in the SWG team to achieve this goal.
I hear you and agree, the game had potential and there was a HUGE desire for a Star Wars Universe. It was pretty consuming! But I still hold that the reason the NGE is here today is because of the selflessness of the player base when the CU was announced and rolled out.
Granted, we can debate the "chicken and egg" theory for months (or years) as to what would have happened if SoE did SWG right from the start, didn't rush out Jedi just to save subscriptions, and if SoE knew how to release quality code rather then sloppy code. But, none of that matters because the "fact" is that the CU was needed. The game was out of hand. Who was responsible for it being out of hand is easy (SoE) but they were also the only ones that could fix it.
IMO, the CU was the step in the right direction. Unfortunately there was typical SoE mis-steps that hurt the CU's chances and unnecessarily chased people away. Most of these were things that if left at the simplest state would have been great additions to the game, but they went to far with them.
For example, the Armor Revamp was AWESOME! Adding Recon, Battle and Assault armor classifications was good and given then different advantages and disadvantages was good. Making a "real" choice in what armor to wear was what was needed. What was not needed and really spoiled the entire Armor Revamp was limiting access to the types of armor. Telling Pistoleers that they can only wear Recon armor was not needed. Why / who cares who is wearing what armor. It simply was not needed. As a result of that one implementation, many people were upset that they could no longer wear the armor they had and the armor they thought looked good. It simply was not needed. But, that is an easy fix.
Another Example and probably the thing that hurt the CU the most was Combat Levels. Personally, I think having them was a good thing. It was much better then the "difficulty" ratings in the Pre-CU in which everything was RED and it meant nothing. Combat Levels provided a much better indication as to expected difficulty. The problem was, they didn't just leave it as a "rule of thumb" they made it into "LAW"! They made Combat Level the determining factor for everything. Rather then tweaking Creatures Health and Damage and resistance to the appropriate levels based on the desired combat level, they reversed engineered it (and poorly) so that everything (damage received, damage done, health) was all based on combat level. It no longer mattered what your weapon was, what your accuracy was, what your defense was, it only mattered what you Combat Level was. If you use a weapon on a CL 50 creature and a CL90 Creature you did completely different damage soley because they had different Combat Levels. This is where the whole thing fell apart. Combat Level wasn't an "indication" it was the "determination".
That problem was a bit harder to solve, but was fixable with some AI / PvE revamps. Overall, the "failure" of the CU was "to much change all at once". They should have rolled out the Armor Revamp first, then rolled out the Weapon Revamp, then Rolled out the Balance Revamp, then by the time they got to this point they would have (in theory) had the PvE Combat Level issues resolved and rolled it out.
Forcing everything out at once, uncomplete and untested, was the downfall of the CU from an inplimination perspecitve.
Anyway, doesn't matter now. SWG is dead and I for one am glad that I was able to return to my real life. Well, somewhat...

alot of the posts here are echoing my sentiments exactly. I think SWG was by far the best game i have ever seen in my life and i miss playing my jedi to this day!. I played from the beginning and stuck with it all the way up the NGE. I enjoyed some proffs so much i had them on other servers just to be able to play them when i dint feel like playing my jedi Col "Dwolfenstein Godsize" of the intrepid server. I have been scanning the forums of Blizzard,Bioware and all the others hoping and praying another "SWG2" is in the works,
/crosses fingers
If anyone hears of this actually happening i will gladly offer up my first born son if you let me know!!
LONG LIVE THE EMPIRE.
Sincerly,
Col. Drwolfenstein Godsize.
