There were around 350 people on the main English-language server (Terra) when I looked last night which is more than enough to keep things interesting if you're a social animal (or you want to kill or be killed). /Edit - In all honesty, 270 people is a fairly decent amount for the size of the neocron world. Sure, 500 or 600 would be best, but half that is better then nothing. Some people kind of figure it out after years and years of waiting: its not happening. Don't worry, you'll get there.
The fact that nothing better has come out is completely a matter of opinion...you have a very skewed opinion if you think neocron is still a great game.
Finally, to enjoy a movie, or music, or any kind of solo entertainment you don't need other people to like it. If you want to eat at an empty restaurant and have stale food go ahead (im sure you're talking out your ass on that one), but when it comes to a MMO the games fun-factor and livelyness come from population. A properly populated mmorpg is fun as hell, an underpopulated mmorpg is boring as hell. If theres anything I really really REALLY hated about neocron was the fact that I had to go FIND a fight when I wanted to pvp. With less then 100 people on a server at night, I had go run around looking for a fight in order to get one. In a populated pvp based mmorpg, fights should be constantly coming to you... whether you want them to or not. Theres pve based mmorpgs that have more pvp then neocron...simply because the population is there for it.

Neocron is not perfect, but it still has not much competition in its particular niche - that is, a blend of FPS and MMORPG. I have tried Project Entropia, which is technically in the same category, but I was not impressed. Planetside I do not know, but it seems unable to draw many players either.
Of course, that does not mean things will remain that way. Fallen Earth, Twilight War and Tabula Rasa are all supposed to have similar gameplay. Two of them even have a similar theme (post-apocalyptic). I guess Reakktor will have to improve on NC to survive that competition, and IMHO Evolution 2.1 is a good start.

I said; no better MMO is currently available. I play basically everything that comes out, and the moment I play a game that is more rewarding then NC I will cancel my account straight away. It has not happened yet...
My opinion is skewed? Camping a forum to stop people from trying a game you dislike is far worse then posting on it to encourage people to come play a game that they enjoy. And for someone who seems to want to be taken seriously; I can't understand why you would have that quote in your signature ( from that great MMORPG designer StanLee2 )
As for finding a fight.. yes. you do have to look for one. no you dont always get a fight. yeah its a problem. When you do the pvp is still far more gratifying then anything else you have to choose from right now.

Honestly I think Neocron is an amazing MMORPG game, anyone who says different obiviously has never played the game. It has amazing style and gameplay not seen in other MMOGs. The only drawback is that not many people in the USA play. I really whish they had the funds to support a larger AD outlet of the game in America. If they even had 500-600 people on every day and a few more on the weekend, this game would be top notch the best MMOG game. This is coming from someone that actually works on a very successful MMOG.

Speaking of being taken seriously, if you quit presenting OPINIONS as FACTS you might get a little more credit. I can sit here and say that apples are way better then oranges all day, that doesn't mean squat. Its an opinion at the most, and nothing more. Gratifying pvp comes from risk vs reward, having something to gain and something to lose. There is nothing to lose in neocron other then a medkit or a psi booster, and in the same way theres nothing to gain. Op wars are fun, but way too small. Try and have a 50v50 op war and the hampster running the server will blow up. If pvp were as great as you THINK it is, the game would have a huge population. But it doesn't...because it sucks, pvp included. At least thats my opinion, and 99.9% of the mmorpg community share the same one.
I have access to computers all day at work, since KK did nothing but fuck with me while I played thier game ill return the favor for a long time to come.

Neocron *DID* have 500-600 people, even hit 700 on Sundays at launch. Anytime there was more then 350 people on the server, it was unplayable. The game code is WAY too poor to ever support a large playerbase, so you can do yourself a favor and stop dreaming.

the population is very low now.. areas that were once populated by dozens are now virtually empty
id imagine that its partly because of the fact that the game is just getting old, but i honestly think the main reason for the pop decrease was Neocron 2.. at least this was why i quit.
i used to be really angry at reakktor and 10acle, but now when i think about neocron im just sad... because i really miss the game and how fun it used to be... in fact last week a friend and i downloaded the trial to see what it was like as of late, and it was fun remembering the game, but we also were reminded of NC2's problems... and were reminded why we quit the game :
- First, the fact alone that they updated NC1 and released it as a new game (NC2) with a higher monthly fee immediately brought my respect for the company way down (especially when the games additions did more harm than good)
- the new player models are not attractive... they have a higher poly count, but in my opinion they ruin the atmosphere by looking so corny. players used to look like cool rugged battle-hardened cyberpunks, and they all had a very distinct design. Tanks were buff and menacing, Private eyes looked like all-around badasses, Spies were thin and agile looking, and Monks had the cool trenchcoats and looked very mysterious. now they look like rigid barbie and ken dolls with MANY ugly vertex problems... vertexes on the fingers and sleeves pulled in the wrong direction during animations (try pulling out any tool and looking at your hands and sleeves in 3rd person), vertexes on the backs of characters that indent into the character when you run, or look upwards... even simply rotating your character, you can notice the texture and vertices being stretched awfully along the waist. Why? well, the old models were low-poly so these problems were not noticeable, but 10acle created the new Sims models, and hastily dropped them into the old playermodel rigs, instead of re-working the character rig and making the vertices stay in place.... Basically, the new playermodels look bad, and animate badly -- DRASTICALLY detracting from the world's once immersive atmosphere. In fact, in the trailer video for "Dome of York" (Neocron 2), they used the OLD playermodel of the male private eye sitting at the table! I have an idea that this was because of the vertex problem with the new private eye mouths (the vertexes on the lower lip stretch a foot out from their face), or the fact that the old private eyes just look better (however I believe it was manipulative and somewhat mean of them to use the old Private Eye playermodel in the DOY trailer video... when you cannot even make yourself look this way anymore!!)
Plus, all the npcs in the game, except for hookers and strippers, still use the old character models from NC1. there are even NPCs that use the old models of the Tank, Private Eye, Spy, and Monk playerclasses! they hastily added some new lighting which I assume makes the game look better in some places, although I have not noticed it, BUT it has a very negative effect on all the OLD models (which 90% of the game is populated by), making their models look even more polygonal (ie you can see defined triangle shapes on NPCs chins and stuff). any NPCs that you might find otherwise that DO in fact use the new playermodels, are incorrectly textured! (jacket texture on skin and face etc)
- i did not like how they dramatically changed the location of everything in the game.... PSI shops were eliminated, so if youre a monk, you basically have to ask on Helpchat where the hell to buy spells and monk equipment. there are "smuggler" NPCs that are scattered in the most awkward and difficult to find places all over the game that monks must buy from, when players using heavy weapons or rifles can just go to any clearly marked weapon shop. i DARE not think that making PSI equipment very hard to find, was one of their solutions for balancing the monk class. On top of this, they still have not updated the Nav-Ray! (And how many years has it been since nc2?) The Nav-Ray is basically a system of visible 3D pathnodes that you can activate to help lead you to a shop or something if you cannot find a shop or whatnot. Well, they still have not updated the nav-ray destinations, so if you search for "Neocron Weapon Shop", and start following the path that appears, it will most likely bring you to some pointless shop that sells "Neocron Magazines" and says "you have reached your destination", so basically you have to ask players on Helpchat for help with this as well, if you do not already know the locations of weapon shops, which new players would obviously not know.
Another thing I highly disliked about the dev's choices in NC2 was the fact that they would sloppily spawn new decorations randomly, and use cheap tricks to cover up areas (for no reason), instead of professionally editing the game's map files. Go take a look at Tech Haven, you might come across some signs that say "Retail Area", and when you follow them, you are led to a large room that was once a small underground shopping mall. But now, they added some overly bright christmas tree models (inside a dark cyberpunk underground research laboratory), and admins have spawned a stack of "countertop" models with a chair on top to create a makeshift podium. They also spawned chairs everywhere in the middle of the hallway, and covered up the old shop entrances with spawned decorations. You can actually walk past those obviously-spawned blockades and see the now-empty octagon-shaped shop rooms down in that mall place, which is now some sort of sloppily constructed Christmas-themed church. So, there are still 3D signs in Tech Haven that say "Retail Area" "Archer & Wesson Weapon Shop" "HEW Weapon shop" etc, but they are too lazy to actually edit the map file and delete those signs -- because they - for some reason - took out ALL weapon shops in Tech Haven!! Even though the Nav-Ray still points to various places there and there are signs pointing you to non-existant weapon shops... Not very professional or user-friendly. This trend seems to be popular all around Neocron's world ever since NC2. I recently explored a zone in the outzone called Industrial-A. On the side of the area in one spot, there were sliding doors that opened into another room with some street merchant shops, in fact the Nav-Ray still points there. But they have now made the doors un-openable for no reason. I do not know why they wanted to remove these shops, but the point is, instead of editing the map file and removing them, they just lazily made the doors un-clickable. As I said this trend of sloppily removing game content for no reason is present throughout the whole game and its disappointing and frustrating. The newbie area of MC5 has even been dumbed down. Its size has been greatly reduced by spawning more fences enclosing the newbie area even further, and instead of keeping all the mobs realistically spread out everywhere in MC5, they decided to make 30 of them all spawn in one valley in a big snake and scorpion orgy. Or take a look in HackNet, the virtual traveling space for hackers. Its a series of walkways with teleporters that can lead you from one destination to another, but all the normal movement physics still exist.... in fact you are still a guy WALKING in those flat energy platforms. What happens if you fall! Uh-oh, zero HP im dead! Wait no, now my HP is full again and im just walking on the bottom of the pit.. and this hacknet map is obviously just a big cube. What the... there is a teleporter down here and it leads out of HackNet. They INTEND for players to fall down there and use the teleporter to get out! That's like designing a Deathmatch game such as Unreal Tournament, but never perfecting the wall collision code, so players can sometimes walk through the walls, then putting "teleporters" on the very outside void zones of the maps, so if players walk out of the walls, they can get back in via teleports. o_O How professional. The game has basically been made very user-unfriendly, awkward, unprofessional and unattractive since NC2.
- My third reason for quitting was the new HUD. The new HUD alone confirmed my suspicions that Reakktor simply wanted to make everything "prettier" instead of more functional. I wish they'd have realized that especially in a game HUD, you must have a perfect balance between functionality and eye-candy, because it is present the entire time you are playing.. Personally I believe their attempt to make everything prettier didnt even succeed. The models have more vertexes but that does not mean they look better, and the HUD has more useless pixels and frills on the side but that does not make it more attractive..
- A new HUGE gameplay problem that i noticed when we played the trial version again - the DOY bots. The world is huge and at South, is Neocron city, and all the way North, is DOY (Dome of York). Im not exaggerrating when I say this - there are extremely tough DOY-sided mobs on the entire northern half of the WORLD, excluding the few western zones where the swamp and military base is. Even the grassy plain areas around Blakkmist Dump that used to be populated by a few dinosaurs and wolves, are now CRAWLING with DOY-faction-sided defense bots. How is this balanced? Neocron has 2 or 3 Stormbots stationed about half a mile apart, and would be easy to sneak by. On top of that, these Stormbots are only stationed in the zones directly by the Neocron city entrances, not the ENTIRE SOUTHERN HALF of the world like the DOY bots are in the northern half. I cant imagine what they consumed on the night they decided to do this to the world of Neocron. About 45% of Neocron's world is now unexplorable due to these scattered instadeath-mobs... unless youre capped or are driving around in a defended vehicle (meaning, you are capped).
Most of the gameplay itself still rather fun, probably because they would actually have to work hard to change it and screw it up. At least the PvE is fun. PVP is nonexistant because of the low player pop now. In fact, an enemy faction guy installed my implants for me. I'd imagine he didnt kill me because if he did, he wouldve pissed off 10% of the current online players.(me)
Neocron 2 is still a fun game, but I would not pay for it for the above reasons (basically the release of NC2 and the drastic changes it brought).
Try the game if you want, it has a free 10-day trial, but I'm fairly certain you will encounter all the problems that I did, however maybe you wont be as depressed about the game since you never played NC1, because you will have never seen what it ONCE was....

I havent had any probs with kk or c2p mehself....hadnt played in along time....came back to check out E2.1 pops are pretty good...but trial is still on
zoneseek = uber nubcake
the only reason i dont play neocron is cause click2pay is bad mmkay
I will play neocron when Evoi. 2.2 hits the market... And the 30 Days freetime for old players wil be fun :-)
the population is very low now.. areas that were once populated by dozens are now virtually empty
id imagine that its partly because of the fact that the game is just getting old, but i honestly think the main reason for the pop decrease was Neocron 2.. at least this was why i quit.
i used to be really angry at reakktor and 10acle, but now when i think about neocron im just sad... because i really miss the game and how fun it used to be... in fact last week a friend and i downloaded the trial to see what it was like as of late, and it was fun remembering the game, but we also were reminded of NC2's problems... and were reminded why we quit the game :
