A complete preview of LOTR (by someone who's never played it)

1. WILL IT BE FUN TO PLAY?  Yes, of course it will, for those who want to play a polished game with a great story and lore.

2.IS IT A BIG GAME? No, at the moment its relatively small compared to other MMO's. But there will be many expansions which will make it (eventually) a huge and satisfying representation of the Tolkein world.

3.IS IT A WOW COPY? Of course it is. Its the lore and the story which will be the most important for those playing. The actual game mechanics are secondary. Therefore, why spend time and money re-inventing the wheel. IF you copy you may as well copy from something that works.

4.WILL IT BE TOO EASY? In terms of time to get to level 1-20 it will be about the same as WOW,there will be no SIGNIFICANT diferrence. Why should there be, this game is made for the masses, there target is not Lineage players, nor EVE or Ryzom. Levelling will seem fun and interesting, nothing more nothing less.

5.ARE THE GRAPHICS AMAZING?No, they are not NEXT GENERATION. They are very nice and will not offend those hoping to see a recognisable world (film, book, imagination). The game cannot be next gen graphically, it has to work for everyone and NOW. The cartoony graphics are a matter of taste, do they lower the recommended specs (as opposed to creating a real world look) of course.

6.PVE WILL BE GREAT. PVP IS RUBBISH. If you mess up the PVE with a LOTR world behind it then you shouldnt be making games. PVP will be restricted because they have to work within the guidelines they were given when they bought the rights to produce the game. IS THIS A PVP GAME? No, if PVP is your thing wait for WAR. Yes it has the monster PVP but......

7. WILL THIS GAME BE HUGE. Yes, it will be huge, it will never be as big as WOW, but it will be a huge success. Firstly, because it has the biggest name ever for an MMO (SWG also) secondly, because they will make sure it is polished to a diamond before release. The game is smaller to assure this.

8.WHATS NEW? Monster play? (created to represent PVP) new, but forced? Smoking pipes-nice for RP and aptmosphere, urrm, real innovation? Not really, why risk bringing the house down due to bad foundations. Games WILL be released with brand new, revolutionary ideas, this is not it, never will be and never should have been expected.

9.IN 2 YEARS WILL IT BE VERY UN-COOL TO SAY YOU PLAY IT? Yes, this will be the new WOW. Be afraid, be very afraid, of admitting you play LOTR. Because it will be a polished, well made, designed ,  and hugely popular game.

Personally im not bothered about LOTR, i probably will play at some point but im in no hurry. This is just my opinion after sifting through some of the opinions on this forum. Which has its LOTR obssesives, trolls, flamers, nut-cases etc. You can get a fair idea of something if you can weed out the garbage from the people with agendas. These are opinions from someone who has never played the game but they will be closer to the truth than a lot of the agenda led rants i see.

This is the best example why someone who did NOT play the game should not write a peview.

The graphics are _not_ cartoony - this is just a lame insult from those who are disappointed in something else and want to bash LOTR, either for simply trolling or I don't know what reasons. NOT true..

And yes, the graphics are amazing, not because they are DX10 (that would be the "nextgen", no?), but because they are very detailed, carefully done and artistically sophisticated.

The fact, that they run smooth like a dream on a toaster does not diminish this :)

As i said it was a personal opinion and i never ATTACKED the game, which i stated several times i think will be fun, enjoyable and a huge sucess. I do not understand your hostility, i believed by calling this,A complete preview of LOTR (by someone whos never played it)this would indicate the nature of my opinions, which were gathered while reading information from this site. As i said there are many different opinions from informed individuals, nut-cases, trolls etc, the sad thing is i know which category under which you fall, you probably do not.

  • DonnieBrascoDonnieBrasco Member Posts: 1,757

The problem is that you are representing something that we (who played the game) really don't like: someone mislead by trolls. Only in 1-2 points, but that is bad enough,

Anyway, forget everything you just wrote (it will be better for everyone!), and jump in the open beta in 2-3 weeks:)

No hostility towards YOU from my side at all - but writing previews by assuming and collection other people's opinions is a very, very bad idea imho! :)

How on earth can you preview something you haven't actually previewed / played? How about opinion? You don't sound like you are very clear on the definition of the word "preview" and it is by no means "COMPLETE"

You points are vague and extreamly subjective. "is it a WoW copy'? for example...how is this a preview??? You didn't "preview" anything.

pre·view also pre·vue  audio  (prvy) KEY

    NOUN:

    1. An advance showing, as of a movie or art exhibition, to which a selected audience is invited before public presentation begins.
    2. An advance viewing or exhibition, especially the presentation of several scenes advertising a forthcoming movie; a trailer.
    3. An introductory or preliminary message, sample, or overview; a foretaste.

You message should be titled "MY OPINION OF LOTR (by someone who's never played and doesn't have a clue what its about but will compare it to WoW anyway)"

The only solid point you make a stab at is the PvP which sounds like is your major gripe since its the only real thing you hit on.

Since you never played it yet and it is still in closed beta...........enough said.

I actually kind of like the fact that this guy posted this because it gives an opportunity for people who have played to respond to misconceptions that others may have.  I have played it.

A lot of the points this guy made are somewhat accurate.  I have major doubts about the PvP as well.  You can call it PvMP, but it is still two players fighting, and that's the definition of PvP.  It may become popular or not.  The PvP area is actually very large and you can even be wargs or giant spiders if you want.  You also have the option of taking over enemy strongholds, so that could be engaging.  If the PvP portion becomes very popular, they might try to expand it by adding more dedicated areas, which could work even within the confines of staying true to the lore.  With future expansions you may get to see some pretty diverse monsters you can play as, and be involved in major battle areas, allowing you to even fell a part of the major battles from the books.

The graphics are not cartoony at all.  Nor are they next-gen.  But they are gorgeous, and are far more enjoyable than the WoW graphics.  Everything is pretty realistically rendered, and the countryside is absolutely beautiful.

The mechanics are similar to WoW, no matter what people say.  But that's going to happen with pretty much any fantasy RPG.

The main difference with WoW is that the quests are very diverse, expansive, and engrossing.  They are the real purpose of playing the game.  You really get a sense of being drawn into the LOTR world and being a part of its story.  Its pretty amazing at how well they've developed the quests to keep you interested and moving along through the different areas.

The world is also HUGE.  You really get a sense of trekking long distances across diverse terrain, through environments you recognize from the books.  It's very amazing actually.  It's the kind of game where you could just wander around for hours looking at the scenery and be engrossed.  I would actually say it feels huge, even at this early stage, and despite the fact that the such a relatively small portion of middle-earth has actually been unlocked.

    I agree 95%.

The 5% that I don't: mechanics are not WoW-like.   They are generic western MMOG-like, or you might call it "Everquest"-like :)

Wow was a game that did NOT bring anything new to the MMOG genre, but tried to collect what works and eliminate that doesn't. LOTR is kindof the "next step" in this direction. You can call it a "sophistication" of an existing genre.

The next-gen MMOG is yet to be seen :) Lotro was not even designed to be one - and that is actually good news, as the result is convincing so far anyways!

Oh, and I forgot to add: the world DOES feel huge - I can't understand who came up with the idea of LOTRO area being "small"... I am lvl 12, only reached Bree recently, and just the Bree area feels huge to explore, and that is only a small part of Eriador, which is only one of the many later-to-come areas. When all the regions (Rohan/Gondor/Mordor) will be added, the area will mindboggingly enormous, imho :/

How the hell can you write a review for something you haven't played? You have no basis what so ever to tell people what LotRO is like if you haven' t played it! Graphics aren't good?!?!? And you say they're cartoony? Open your eyes sir! They are not at all cartoony. Have you played with the high resolution client? Oh, wait, you haven't even played the game! You my friend are one of those so called trolls and nut-cases you that you stated in your speech. Of course this isn't the best game, but it isn't any thing like WoW! God, AC II is built the same as this and WoW. Its the 'generic' western MMO setup. WoW didn't start it either. Even if the mechanics are similar it is changed enough that it is its own MMO.

I was going to post the definition of the word 'Preview' but I see Torak already beat me.

I've played WoW, and LotRO feels nothing like it. If I were to say it feels like any current MMO it probably would be AC II, also made by Turbine.

It makes me sad to know some one believes they can write a preview of a product without testing it.

HUH? It will be polished, well made and designed, but I should be afraid to tell anyone i play it?? If its a hugely popular game in 2 years wouldn't that meet the criteria of "cool"??? I guess i'm getting too old to understand kids these days...

What kind of nub gives a crap about what other gamers think is cool or not?

I don't even agree with most other gamers, why would it matter to me what these eejits think of the game I play?

This is just silly stuff IMO.

And for the record, your review sucked.
