Dungeons & Dragons Online: Two New Services

TaeraTaera Community ManagerMember CommonPosts: 1,078

Turbine indroduces two new services to DDO: Character Renaming and Guild Renaming.

Turbine's Customer Service Team now offers new services for your DDO characters and guilds!

As of today, you can change your character or guild name by purchasing one of our Premium Services.

Character Rename:

Your name should reflect who you are. Perhaps your tastes have changed or your character has grown in an unexpected direction. Maybe you've met a beautiful elf and would like to get married. Whatever the reason - if your name no longer expresses the true you, you can update your character's name through the new Character Rename Service.

Guild Rename:

Did you pick a name for your guild that you now hate? Have you thought of a newer, better name? One that reflects where you guild is now, and not where it was a year ago? You can now change your guild's name to better represent yourselves in Stormreach.

"nice" price @ $19.99 for renames.. business mind alike.

Some games don't give you an option to change your name. If you really want to change it, the $19.99 should not be an issue. Just pick something you like when you start and don't worry about it.

Looks like they're trying to find new ways of getting money. A guild rename for $20? I'm no DDO player but isn't it easier just creating a new guild?

    Ridiculous prices.

Now, now, let's not begrudge Turbine trying to turn a few extra dollars out of DDO. I mean, they have to get some cash out of the game, because they sure don't have the playerbase to count on for that $15/month.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO, Rift (beta) and WoW (on occasion)

OH MY FREAKING LORD!  ROFLMFAO!  I can't stop laughing at this!

How could this possibly NOT be seen as testament to the things I've been saying about how this game is dying!?

DDO is so hard pressed for money (since they have such any itty bitty number of subscribers) that they have to start going asian (Sorry, that's not a racist thing, it's a fact of how many asian games are!)  in their game and offering junk in the game for real life money.

Your downward spiral continues!  Good bye DDO!

  • I really don't think people think the rename fee all the way through. If the process of renaming was completely free how many would just go out and scam their little hearts out before renaming their character so no one knows its them. Same way for guilds, part of a mmorpg is if you have a bad reputation you have to live with it to a extent. The renaming fee is enough to discourage people from going out and acting like a complete jerk knowing they can rename later.

Hell, they might as well sell their own gold and platinum too, while they're at it.

Not an issue? We are talking 20$ to change that name floating over your head, 20 dollars!

OMG! I can't believe it!  I'm going to re-install the game and re-activate my account right this second!!! PFFFFFFFT!  I would rather eat glass.  This game is dead...give it up.

There is actually a valid reason for charging for a name change, it is not just so they can suck more money out of their players.  One thing that people like about MMOs is the sense of "community."  This means that as players go through the game they can develope good/bad reputations.  If name changes were totally free there would be no way to track the a-holes that steal loot, etc because they would just change their name and voila no body knows who they are.  At $20 that's a reasonable fee for someone who really really wants to change their name but it's also enough to discourage people from doing it just to hide their identity because they've been a jerk that no one wants to deal with.

It's easy to point at companies like Sony and say it's all about raking in the cash, but sometimes there is a valid reason.
