That game is great ! I was completly addicted to it for the first 2 weeks. The character creation is fantastic, the best i ever seen in any games. Leveling is pretty fast up to 15, you can actually solo pretty well up to 15. After 15 is when it start getting really, really, really slow and boring. Tired of running around trying to kill 20 COT's in Perez Park ? Why don't go kill 30 now ? Oh btw go Kill 20 more after that and when you are done kill 30 more of that other type. COH is not a MMORPG it's an online shooter ! Yes it's true, only difference between Quake in COH is that you have to overcome the frustration of always having the mob your fighting getting kill stealed by another player. That game has NO DEPTH, only thing you can do in that game is kill, kill, kill. It's just TOO BAD, i'm not gonna pay 15$ per month to grind my way to 40 doing the exact same type of missions over, over, over, over again.

Im sorry you had a bad experience with your missions, etc. I, myself, have had a blast with my mission lists and tasks. I havent really had a whole lot of Kill a certain number of X. My missions were indepth and very broad.
Just last week, I took out an Archvillian...and that was a lotta fun. Much better than running and pressing an attack button. I had to use strategy to take him out.
I havent just killed killed killed. I love roleplaying so I have encountered a lotta depth.
But if you dont like you dont like it. I hope you find a game that is better for ya!

Wow thats quite a vocabulary you have there kid. Simply put not everybody can handle MMOs. If some of these posters against CoH took time to read the descriptions of the missions they wouldn't have to kill <insert number here> Baddies all the time, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. Also if these same people read the description of new powers they may be able to solo better if they so chose.
This is a great game for a certain type of gamer and all of the hype generated to many newbies who couldn't punch their way out of a paper bag, let alone click a mouse. I think these people should post what level, archtype, and server they are on; so we can see what type of gamer they really are.

I'm quite sorry to hear that your friends and guild mates left your main game for one which you could not afford to purchase at this time.
perhaps you can get some sympathy on the boards for the game you play.
or of course, you can mindlessly bash games you don't play in hopes your friends do not move to other games.

I like the game, but i think the high end game needs to be discussed more. Im the type of gamer that levels to get to the high end game; which is usually where the fun stuff is. I dont enjoy the treadmill systems, and have repeatedly bashed it on many threads.
But if the game is good enough in the high end i might go through with it, if its not a crazy grind. I am curious as what are we to do at the higher levels? At 40 do you just start a new character? I dont think a high end mob will help much since they are no drops. Hrm scary, once i think about it more and more.
Like i said im the type of gamer, that will go through the grind to get to the good stuff. Not grind because that is the good stuff.
I have been playing since Beta and I still love it. I just don't think its for everyone. Its a social game at the moment, the enjoyment is from meeting people, and working with them to gain various victories.
I have not got a single character over 16, but I do have a few different types and I still enjoy going on missions with people, working on the tactics, especially the more difficult things like an 8 person mission for a higher lvl party member. They are tough, you gotta think and when you do win out over the odds it does feel good.
Having said that, I think it unfortunate that some people are being turned off the game at this early stage, really if you want high lvl content don't play the game yet, wait and see what happens after a few patches and the expansion. They did their best to get a good playable game out, before the big wave with WoW and EQ2 comes and washes over, and I can understand why they had to do that economically. But to do that they had to sacrifice a few things from initial release.
We already know the game will change dramatically due to the villain/PvP expansion, and some of the things they are also putting in like supergroup HQs. There is also the main storylines to go in, with invasions and so forth, so I assume once you get a character to the lvl cap the reward will be to be able to take part in these things as well as whatever they end up doing with the PvP bit.
But basically to me this game is about people more than objects or lvls, they have given us a beautiful world, were you can express some creativity in your choice of costume and powers, and I for one am still having alot of fun working with others on missions, experiencing new group dynamics, and learning the tactics for each power i try.
I am sure PvP will add an extra dimension once I have worked everything out on the computer oponants, and I can see this game being stimulating for a long time to come.
I agree its not for everyone, and like i said i have enjoyed myself. But ya to me and a few friends playing atm, we are getting burned abit. Mainly because all the missions are the same. But im just curious as to what the high game is?
I have asked this a few times on the main COH Board, and i get the same response. "We dont know either, but im sure it will be announced."
If its getting boring for you, dont log in. Go play something else. In a few days or weeks, come back and play CoH again.
Why do some complainers expect a game to be the end all of their time 24x7 for weeks on end?
Its a game, play it as a past time.
Here is a hint on how to make any game more exciting - dont play it all the time.

Control is an illusion!
i play alot of hours, like 14 hrs. a day, and i get bored of alot of games very fast obviously, but not this one yet.
heres what you have to do, make new chars, make all the different archetypes, get them to about 15 and start a new one. there are some chars i just loved playing, like my dark/regen scrapper and my grav/storm controller that i havent logged into for a week becasue there are so many more to try. Its not like your losing out to anyone, when the lvl cap is rumored to be moved up, pick your favorite and get him to 40 and be ready for it.
if you just pick one and lvl to 40 then yeah, you gonna get bored fast. if you like storylines, do them for each natural/science/tech/ etc..
not saying this game will last me for 5 months in its current state, but for longer than most games
There are a couple different types of missions and different types of enemies. If you compare it to other mmorpg's the missions alone are more impressive than quests. And the enemy AI is much more challenging than you see in most mmorpgs.
That said, its still boring after a while. It shouldn't be with all it has going for it, but I think the problem is in the drive to keep going. If you think about it, how many of you would quit such a good game before you at least hit the lvl cap? I can see people quitting an unfun game, but this game is fun...it just doesn't give you a reason to keep playing. I guess theres no drastic escalation like most games, not just mmorpgs, that gives you that feeling to keep on. Theres no epic dungeons or epic quests, aside from task forces which I wouldn't equate to epic quests. It just needs alot of work, it has a great base in great gameplay...and it needs to work off that instead of ignoring the problem.
For me personally, I find it a bit boring already. It is still fun but I tend to only play once or twice a week already, whereas I played EQ, DAoC and others 4-5 nights or more a week.
I guess it really boils down to what you want from a MMORPG. CoH does what it aimed to do very well. Be easy and fast. The group tactics are fairly easy for figure out with seasoned group of MMORPG junkies playing and it just turns into a run around to contacts, get missions and do them senario.
I think that there are 3 things in this game that make it seem more repititive to me anyway.
1) It's setting. The city landscape, though well done, is a bit repetitive in appearance. I love seeing new areas that really look different and are distinguishable. The setting alone really doesn't allow for the amount of diversity that fantasy MMORPG's provide.
2) The bad guys. The are a very limited number of types of bad guys. In most MMORPGs the creature lists are quite extensive. I don't care if some of the creatures are big killer bees or not, there are tons of different mobs.
3) Quests, whether a little different or not are just boring to me. The quests themselves are like "tasks" in most MMORPG. Knock EQ all you want, but some of the quests in EQ were amazing. You would have to see 12 zones, a dozen different people and numerous mobs to finish some. Granted I hated the "camping" quests, but so many were just really cool and well done.
I guess writing this and rereading it makes my boredom come down to one basic problem : lack of variety.
I really enjoy the variety available in games like EQ and DAoC. The lack of variety in CoH (bar the huge amount of cool player characters running around) is what has made it less intriguing to me.
I think CoH will be a hold-over game for me and many people till WoW and/or EQ 2 hit the shelves.
Beta'd: Neocron, Planetside, ShadowBane, Horizons, City of Heros, Saga of Ryzom, Lineage II, WoW Stress Test
Played: EQ, Shadowbane, DAoC, SWG, Anarchy Online, Asherson's Call 2. Earth and Beyond, City of Heros, EQ
Playing: WAITING FOR WOW and EQ 2
One thing that I would definitely say is that if you are the type of person that prefers to solo for the bulk of their playtime, that you will most likely grow tired of the game much faster. While soloing for most archetypes and power combos is viable, it certainly isn't the same experience as with a group.
I love the game. The game is great, but the reason why I love it is:
1) Its simple. Ever here someone say "keep it simple, stupid". This is it. Simple things are usually very fun. Take Tetris for example. Thats a fun game and its probably because its very simple.
2) Mission system is cool. I think the missions here are great. They build on each other unlike the AO mission system.
3) Debt system works nicely. Its a love and hate relationship. I hate debt, but I really hate loosing XP or levels for someone elses mistake. So Debt is better.
4) Its not done yet. Every other MMORPG that I have seen were released under the premise that the game was done. This is it and have fun. However COH is not done. There will be more with COV and probably more after that. So play to level 40 (or however high you can go) so that your prepared to deal with those pesty Villians.
Get it, Love it, Play it.

interestingly there seems to be plans for occasional updates in addition to expansions.
in other words, free auto patching updates every few months like AC1/DM/2 does plus big expansions now and then that have to be purchased. should make for a "new game" type experience on a fairly regular basis and keep things fresh.
well, unless of course you are a 10+ hour a day endgame grinder, and lets face it, that type can't be kept happy with a game for more then a month anyway.

Agreed.
I said it in beta, and I said it upon release...the game has not depth and it will get boring fast. I still bought it, but I know the love affaie is waning...too bad, could have been a long term fun game to play.
I sometimes wonder if PGers understand the idea of mmorpgs or rpgs (for that matter). By nature, there is no end-game it is the journey (and how you take it) that makes the game enjoyable for me. It doesn't matter whether the game is CoH or D&D - you take the trip & live the character. It shouldn't be - I must be lvl 40 to have ubersomethingsupercoolcrushkilldestroy item so I can give battle to ubervillainyouwilldieatmyhands.
I think the lvl to mission aspect of the game is great - Every indoor mission I have done is winable (that doesn't mean I haven't been sent to the hospital (quite) a number of times). Each mission requires it's own strategy for each archetype. And I find that enjoyable.
I enjoy grouping in this game - everyone has been very friendly (and I was not a big grouper in other mmos). I have also been a sidekick for a few missions (which was also very cool).
I have seen some people post that they run out of missions?!? This I don't believe unless they have turned down meeting every contact a current contact wants to introduce you to. My lvl 12 tanker has 10 contacts & I always have 3 mission running.
Not everyone will like this game (so be it). I showed CoH to my nephew last night - he liked the look & feel of the game, but said without loot he would not play it (unless there is a free trial). What could I say - he wants loot & thats the end of that.
My other nephew said that loot was not that important to him, but as yet he has not signed on either. Both as still playing AC2 (which I personally couldn't stand).
Well that's my rant. Of course, I am a bit older than most of the people posting here & playing the game. I started playing rpgs when they were the "new" thing, that no one else was playing. Boy am I old!

Edit: I just looked under your user info and you are older than me, but I'm not sure how to define "a bit older" I also looked at other ages in the CoH forums here and seems like the average age would be in the upper 20's.
39.. Got 23 years of computer game experience now... I always hoped MMORPGs would be the more mature peoples Online games...
Boy how wrong I can be at times... Maturity did not come in a gift box at a certain age, of that I am sure now.

Control is an illusion!
Well i haven't got this game and i might be wrong on many points
If i get it correct you kill bad guys, level kill more bad guys, well that part is just like any other rpg offline or online, but no loot?? you get cash?? easy is nice but i'm trying out horizons right now, not all bad but dumbed down to boredom, compare it to a game like anarchy online and eve that is very hard, judging from the screen shots CoH looks very nice but if there is nothing to look forward to, say like getting a plane in ao, or better ship in eve i have a hard time seeing how this game will be fun for any longer period of time.
Another point, economy, $50 is not all cheap, for me in sweden that is like 450-500skr about a regular offline pc game, add to that $15 a month + that crap eu tax you have a game that is rather costly, and it seems that you pay $50 even if you download, considering no printed manual or box i think it should be cheaper, a 7 day free trial or something is nice as well, not all fun to shell out $50 on a hyped game just to get bored to tears after 4 hours, the monthly price also includes a comic, nice touch i guess if you live in the states, but for others you will not get it but still pay for it.
Maybe the $15 monthly tag is "the new norm" but if you also have to pay $50 for the game itself i think it is a bit much, when i started playing everquest back in mid 2001 i got the gold box that had the original eq, kunark and velious in one box, payed less then $30 for that, question is when is $17 to be considered the norm, or $19 or $21, considering many games are released in beta i don't like the development.
There might be a "demo" of CoH i haven't checked back on the official site in a while, and maybe the download is cheaper, if so i appologise, i like games like eve and ao that you at least can try out for a few days before starting to pay, but as some have mentioned above this game might be just right for some people while others hate it.
Adding that i'm 34, i currently subscribe to eve, anarchy online, everquest, neocron and horizons, and project entropia but that one is sort of free
