So I've decided to update my memory to 1gig, and was wondering what I should be shopping for? I have two memory slots, and currently have 512 DDR SDRAM. Which brand do you recommend, and how much should I be expecting to pay? What would the difference be between some cheapy brand and a better known brand? I have a DELL 4550 with P4 2.4GHZ/80GIG/ATI AIW 9800 PRO 128. The max memory is 1GHZ for my system. Would I notice a huge difference? THank you.

I'm not sure, how would I find out?
Well looking at your specs I would say you are using DDR RAM.Normally SDRAM is found in computers that are nearly 3 yrs or above. The key you need to know is whats the pc type ie pc2700 or what.Because this determines its compatibility.
Normally its written in the invoice sent with the computer. If not ring up dell. Also watch the motherboard some motherbord have only 2 DDR slots and companies use 2X 256 sticks to save money rather then 1.Meaning if it is so you need to buy 2 x 512 sticks or go with less memory.
As for mmorpg not seen one that needs more then 756 RAM at the moment with exception of planetside.Graphics card is the main thing after this and you have a great one that would last you thru 1 or 2 years easy.
Can someone explain the difference between pc2800 and pc3200 and so forth and how it relates to price?
Why does planetside need more?anyone?
pc3200 is faster then pc2700 .It is advisable to buy the same type as you have because it can cause one RAM stick to move faster then other and crash the system. So if you have pc2700 stick with it and buy the same or change all the RAM if you want something like a 4200.However the speeds are not that much different to bother with a total overhaul.
Many difference in speed is if its SDRAM or DDR.Most post 2001 computers use DDR anyhow.
As for planetside needing more then 512 RAM well its playable but will lag bad in a big battle no matter your card.SoE says its because of the sheer size of number of players in one location for a FPS.Some say its poor programming with memory leaks .Pick which one you want but fact remains you need more then 512 to enjoy it.

The first thing you should do is look at the documentation that was provided to you by Dell.
In there it should say what type of RAM was installed in your system. There's no need to acquire faster RAM as it will be a waste of money unless you replace ALL of your RAM with the same speed. (provided your system will accommodate the faster speed) This has to do with the speed of your FSB.
You can go to Dell's website and find out what RAM to use then go shopping or pay what Dell charges. I'd go shopping
