There's no solid numbers on this because its all speculative at this point no matter what people tell you

The only thing I can tell you is all servers on the weeknights and weekends are at Medium for the exception of about 5 servers which are labeled at heavy,

During the rest of the week everything is at medium.

The numbers aren't that closely guarded.  You're looking at a figure around 150k.  This isn't blank speculation.  It's a number reported by multiple big name game outlets who have reliable sources.

    I dont think so lol

You show me links where EQ2 developers give current numbers and I'll stick with that.  In the meantime, Ive never seen official numbers (and game outlet stores do nothing for me in terms of proof)

No offense to you.  I just go by things officially and not through second and third party guesses. I work for SOE as a volunteer GM of sorts and I dont even know the answers.

Developers know nothing, its the marketing people that have the crunchy numbers and real statistics on numbers of subscribers.

3rd party sources usually get its database through the marketing department. for 150k, i think thats the old amount.. considering reading EQ2 forums.. 103k is the semi-round figure.

All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.

If you only rely on official information, you must have a really hard time navigating through life.  Take some risks.  Risk does not translate exactly to loss.   Often times a gamble is the wise course.

Of course, since you do work for SOE (volunteer or no), you do have reason not to like the reports by some.   A bias can affect ones ability to accept risks.

Sony doens't release numbers for individual games anymore but according to their annual report SOE has 680 000 total subscribers not counting Vanguard. It’s a fair bet that more of those are in EQ2 then EQ1 or SWG at this point, and the rest are smaller games like planetside and the Matrix online.

according to mmogchart.com eq2 had around 170.000 subscribers in july 2006. All time high for eq2 was 500k in 2004

I get through life very well without knowing the official numbers for EQ2.  My point of my reply to the OP is that no one knows the true answer and its been debated on EQ2 mmorpg.com forums for years now.  I don't know how me refusing to say what the amount is when I dont know is me having a hard time navigating through life.

Often times a gamble is the wise course.

Alrighty then.  Then again, I have no idea what this has to do with the original posters question about subscription numbers.  Do a search on this in these forums.  Thousands of posts were already done and it always resulted in the same debate with no answers.

Seriously, what are you talking about lol.  Just because I dont know the exact answer of subscription numbers and just because I dont like to post what the numbers are if I dont know myself does not make me a bias sony player who cannot take risks.

I appreciate your concern but I seriously think you read too much into my post

Late last year one of the devs let slip that subs have increased since EoF came out, unfortunately I can't find the link.

I personally felt a significant drop in population when Vanguard came out, and to a lesser extent, TBC. Some guilds I know lost half of their players. The vast majority of those have come back and the popualtion feels no different than before those games come out.

EoF sold more boxes in the first week then either DoF or KoS did in total, so it’s a safe bet subscriber numbers have climbed over the last 1.5 years. Not enough to make up for the drop in the first 6 months after release though.

It's more appealing to casual gamers. Also a lot of people hate SOE for good reason and won't play their games anymore.

I can state the reasons here:

    • WoW was the more polished product on release. Not without problems, but very good for an MMO release. EQ2 had bugs, lag, major class imbalances and other issues that took at least 6 months to work out.

    • System requirements. WoW could be played on a low-end machine even back in 2004. I have a colleague at work who plays on a corporate Dell box with integrated graphics. EQ2 at launch was a system killer, very much like Vanguard is today. A lot of people left because of this and only today can a low to mid range system handle it. Those who play today are reaping the rewards, EQ2's graphics are amazing and certainly in the top 3 MMOs at the moment.
    • Blizzard had a massive fanbase with their previous Warcraft/Starcraft games that sold millions, and many of these went to WoW when it came out. EQ2 only had around 400k EQ players to draw from, and many of those decided to stay put, or go to WoW for the reasons above.

    • WoW has benefitted from a 'snowball effect', many players have started because their school friends/colleagues etc are playing. Looking in the general discussion or WoW forum there are many people who have had enough of WoW or don't really like the game who are still there because their friends or guildmates are still playing.

But as we EQ2ers know, at this time EQ2>WoW. If both games were lauched today with all xpacks etc included, it would be EQ2 that would go on to have 8 million subs and not the other way around.

    I think you're dreaming.

There was a spike in sales after EoF's launch but since then people have been quitting by the hundreds.   Just look at www.stationexchange.com.   Level 70 characters selling for less than $100 with no bids and more popping up daily.  Many people labeled EoF "strike three" and that's why the servers are barren.

Why is that? Everyone seems to agree that EoF was a excellent expansion packed with content and was acclaimed by both players and the gaming press. Also the servers are far from barren, as far as I know the only servers with a population issue are the Euro PvP servers and they've been like that from day one.

The only barrier to new blood coming in to the game is feeble marketing and scarcity of boxes in the stores. Certainly here in the UK I can't find the game in any local store and even the online stores that carry it never have it in stock more than a few days before selling out.

You really underestimate how much hatred there is towards SOE in the marketplace. You can't screw over thousands of gamers and not expect a domino effect of negativity.

You must not be looking very hard.  Try re-rolling an alt on any server.  Populations are extremely sparse from 10-60

EoF was the worst expansion to date.  Most players were already level 70 and it offered very little content for that level range.  Most people rerolled  Faes but quickly wore of the novelty and then the mass exodus began.  People have been quitting and selling their players on Station Exchange in droves and the prices on characters have gone from in the $300-$400 range to under $100 if you're lucky.

I must agree. I have always wanted to try Everquest (any of them) but after waht SOE has done I cannot bring myself to do it as I see it as a waste of money.

I really hope that they sort it out and We can all get on to playing great games.

Sorry if this sounds like a flame but it isn't.

    I wish you all well.

Maybe your problem is that you are playing on an SE server ;)

Seriously, on both servers I play on there are instances of server lag almost every night indicating they are still packed to capacity. I’m also seeing far more people return from other games then people leaving.  My guild has been a smallish one since populations plummeted pre KoS but since EoF came out we’ve had to pull out of our raid alliance and set up out own force because we have so many people returning there are just not enough spots available.

There is a natural drop in activity after an expansion has been out for a while, that coupled with the release of Vanguard and Burning Crusades means there are not the same type of crowds there were just after EoF was released but this doesn’t indicate a drop in subscribers.  Most of the people that ried these games are still playing EQ2, though many of them didn’t stick in Vanguard or WoW.

Really the only people I’ve hear complain about EoF are the hardcore raiders who don’t think EQ2 allows them to be leet enough for their liking and who think every expansion needs to be aimed squarely at them and no one else. Many of these have moved on to Vanguard, but no one even noticed their passing.

The PvP servers could use some love as well, although EoF did iron out some of the basic mechanics there is still more to be done in that area before much can be done with the overall PvP experience.

EQII must be doing well because they have not invited me to play a 30 day trial as they do every 6 months with EQ.

Game publishers won't reveal their sub numbers unless doing so reveals that they are kicking arse (WOW) or expanding their player base (EvE)....

I've played both WoE and EQ2. EQ2 is far far far better. WoW is for kiddies.

Now, whenever I've been online with EQ2, most servers have been medium to heavy (any time of day). They aren't lacking subscribers.
  • OBK1OBK1 Member Posts: 637

On the european Runnyeye server I can find players in just about any level range, nothing barren about that server! I like EoF but they have to be careful not to overdo the expansions with more and more huge landmasses, original EQ really suffers from that. No one plays in the original areas on EQ1 (at least not when I quit that game).

I started playing about 2 weeks ago and have never seen a lack of players at least not on the US non exchange pvp server I play on. I know this becuase I can barely quest without getting killed by one group or another.
