gay haters?

i found this on wikipedia.org

Although successful, World of Warcraft has received its share of criticism. One of the most recent of these controversies had to do with Blizzard's treatment of a transgender player when she made a guild for other gay or gay-friendly players

this sounds like they dont like gay people.  now dont get me wrong i am not partically fond of gay people nor do i promote bein gay is ok, but messin with people on a online game bc they are different is just wrong even if they are gay.  i dont see why they couldnt do this bc its just a game and it shouldnt be that big of a deal.  maybe this is old idk but i just noticed it.

Not sure about the thought process behind this policy as they call it. If these players wish to potnetially subject themselves t oharassment...thats there business not Bizzards.

Ive seen the story a while back.

TBH in my world inside my brain where the sky is a lovely shade of dark purple we are free to hate EVERYONE for any reason. As long as the hatred is doled out equally amongst all groups, ethnicity and skin color as well.

That being said Blizzard lets a lot of things  "slide" .

I remember in CoH  there was a group of potheads that had a really good name  i think it was something like "420"  they even roleplayed stoned super heroes.

Cryptic squashed that once they became popular and had 50 ACTIVE members. So just chalk it up to devs being terminally afraid of pushing the envelope.

    What is your physical limit?

You really make yourself sound like a hallmark of acceptance and tolerance with this one.

"now dont get me wrong i am not partically fond of gay people nor do i promote bein gay is ok"

Not even the abigous Seinfeild quote "Not that there is anything wrong with that"

Really dude this attitude is part of the problem.  Not  that you have to condone a lifestyle, but really you might wanna go out meet some people, you might just find that Gay people are just like every body else.  Thus undeserving of your general unfondness.  But kudos for pointing out that it is not ok in a online game.

The fact that you call them "gay" makes you sound like a hypocrite.

How can they hate gays? when they have Elves prancing about in WoW.
  • ferofaxferofax Member Posts: 82
...there will always be people who dont mind dishing out discrimination as long as its not them... try doing it to them and they'd probly fume like hell. ive no qualms with gay people, and i dont mind calling them gay, because like it or not gay is what they are, no need for fancy words like "transgender" or whatnots. if somebody has issues with gays being called "gay" then i sure as hell would like to know what to call them without offending any of them...

I personally don't agree with the lifestyle gay people choose to live, but there should be no descrimination against them because of who they are.

At the person who says elves are gay...grow up. Firstly, there are elf females and and I don't get why they would be gay, and if you think elf males are gay just because they have long ears that's just sad. So why do you hate elves? Hmmm...

Personally I dont care if a person is gay or not. It really doesnt matter to me what you do. I am always curious though as to why people have to bring this shit in to the game? Is being gay such a big deal to gay people? Why do people think the world needs to know what you are? Why do you think people care? Every guild I have ever been in had gays. How do I know they were gay? They would talk about it ALL of the time. Every chance they had. Why?  What difference does it make while we are killing a dragon if you like the same sex? People just need to know where to draw the line. If you are gay no you shouldnt be ashamed of what you are. You also dont need to go on about it constantly.

I would love to know what the name of the guild was or how Blizz even found out about it.

They found out because the members were using global to promote the guild. They were letting others know that they could join the guild and not be afraid of constantly being harrassed. It backfired though because it stirred up controversy.

The thing that bothers me is what does being gay have to do with playing WoW? Why do people even need to know you're gay? I have no fondness for the gay lifestyle either but they do bring some of it on themselves. When is the last time you heard someone announce they were coming out of the closet and then proceeded to tell the whole world they were heterosexual. Yet gay people make a big deal of it. Who cares? Race, sexual persuasion, politics etc. have absolutely no business being ingame period. I agree with Blizzard 100%. If they allow this the next thing you know WoW would have a version of the Ku Klux Klan or the NAACP in the form of guilds. It's a game. Play the game and keep all of that stuff out of it.

FYI: Gay haters, are usually gay themselves, they haven't 'outted' (sp) themselves just yet.

The reason WoW did not allow them to have a guild of only gay/ transgendered players is simple: by doing so you alow other groups to align themselves by race, religon, or sexual orientation. Then you have these guilds begin to hate one another, just like they do in 'real life'. Law suits would soon follow, then the government gets involved and try to regulate the genre. I appreciate all people being able to be who they are. But please, leave that stuff behind when you play the game. There are much better forums in which to express yourself or your views.

The problem with this is that you never know the whole story. I don't really think Blizzard gave a clan problems because they were gay. However, were they trying to push an agenda on the boards? Were they in your face? How were they advertising themselves?

It would be the same with any other group. Let's say someone wanted to make an extremely right wing, evagelical clan. If they disrupted the forums or tried to use the forums for propaganda or pushing their agenda, then I'm sure Blizzard would have to step in.

But if they just made a post advertising a clan that was "open to gay/lesbian lifestyles" and left it at that AND THEN Blizzard gave them problems... well, that could be an issue.

Listen, people don't have to like any particular group of people. All they have to do is to adopt a live and let live set of values. Otherwise it goes both ways. People can say they hate one group but is that group trying to shove their beliefs down the first group's throats?

"FYI: Gay haters, are usually gay themselves, they haven't 'outted' (sp) themselves just yet. "

Another factless based 'They' say comment with absolutly no basis in truth. People hate and discriminate for a large amount of reasons but to say that gay-bashers are themselves usually gay is nonsense.

I have come to this conclusion about homosexuality. " I'm not."

Thats it. What you do is your business.

Heard it was something about a Gay guild not letting people in because they were not gay. And that was what Blizz didn't like. Don't know the full story but that's it in a nutshell.

Reminds me of Barrens chat on my old server.

Terms such as "Gay" or mispellings such as "Ghey" were constantly used as an insult. I slapped them down for it. Looking back maybe I should have just reported them

I thought the whole idea of playing an MMO/MMORPG was to relax and escape from this world's issues for a little bit?

Gay/Non-Gay and racial discrimination, outside the game context (Alliance Vs. Horde in this case), should not be in game.

If you want to be noted for your sexuality then load up IMVU or whatever and go about your "online sex life".

In Blizzard's defense, i think they made a very rational decision to ban the gay guild. Imagine this gay guild becomes popular on the server, there will be everlasting mocking/discrimination/raiding from other faction etc because we don't particularly live in a gay loving community. As a result of this, Blizzard will be the victom of players' conflicts, which they should prevent.

On top of that, why the hack would someone make a gay guild like that. this is a game based on war, not romance. If you want to find your gay groupies, then go to a gay bar.
  • NatoBNatoB Member Posts: 114
they banned the guild becoz its a form of discrimination, same reason they wouldnt have a "Blacks Only" guild.

You ask why does Sexual orientation come up in game? simple. People want to join guilds where they can feel comfortable with who they are. They don't want to have to edit themselves just in case there is someone in the guild who doesn't like gays. It isn't easy not talking about your partner the person who you love. I mean something as simple as "hey Guys I have to go, my Girlfriend wants me to cook dinner" (this doesn't look bad until you realize that I am a woman saying this).

Then there are those guilds full of kiddies who are always on about how "fill in the blank thing" is "Gay". Heck if you are gay it just becomes sooo tiresome having to listen to the little pinheads go on about stuff like this. It is nice to know that the guild doesn't put up with stuff like that. It is nice to know that you are in a guild that is full of people like yourself and those who are comfortable with you and the person you love. It is really too bad that someone was disiplined for advertising that her guild was "GLBT friendly" not exclusive, Friendly.

Yeah bigotry is something that should be kept from all games. It really doesn't belong there. It's too bad that you run across it quite often in the mmo's and esp WoW's PvP servers. So keep the bigotry away from the game. I don't care if you hate folks that are Horde or Alliance because that's part of Wow's lore, but leave the RL bigotry out of the game.

This just in: Blizzard apologized to the GM of that guild months ago, and created the Guild Recruitment chat channel in part due to this controversy. The Game Master who chastised the leader of the guild in question (OZ) was found to have made a mistake, because they misinterpreted the "Sexual Discrimination" policy and in doing so, discriminated against a player.

This is a very old story, and was cleared up months and months ago.

    Currently playing:
LOTRO, Rift (beta) and WoW (on occasion)

Basically since I remember the whole incident. There was a guild that was advertising themselves as being "GLBT friendly". Someone took offense to the mention of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgendered (GLBT) friendly guilds advertising in General (this was Waaay before the guild recruitment channel existed BTW). A GM told the guild leader that she couldn't advertise that way. The issue was brought to the forums and caused a HUGE uproar. Blizzard found out just how many gay gamers they had IG, and how POed they were that the GM acted in that way. Eventuallly Blizzard apologized to the guild in question and the whole thing basically faded away.

It is the reason why people don't play with real names, I think RPG is short from ROLE PLAYING GAME. In table top games I have played gay characters and I'm Straight (from Hell ;P). "I'm not discriminating, I hate everything" my friend used to say :) I have few gay friends and they don't make issue out of it, not in RL or in any community. Try to play gay character as a hetero or vice-versa, if you feel disgusted, maybe the problem looks in the mirror.

How many female toons you see in any MMO is realy girl or woman? They are JUST toons, not who you really are. I have acted gay in RL just to annoy people. Don't be so deadly serious about thing that in most of civilized countries isn't big deal. Or maybe we could star PA or clan for in-bred hillbillys as well? When I blast you to thousand bits in SWG: Jump to lightspeed with my X-Wing I don't care where you from or what you do.

And elves are gay!! Just watch Orlando Bloom in LOTR :)

Ant Top Gun is gay :)

And please, I hope no one takes me too seriously, I'm 28 and I play computer games :)

    Take care!

Why bother, let everyone start their own guilds

There are even maybe guilds with real weird people (stockholm, sweden) thats what we should care about instead.

But a homosexual friend invited my to a homo web chat....and damn they where hostile to me....they said i was a idiot and and throw me out.

Its almost the same when I (a Darkfall lover)  visit a WoW web chat....i hate those people...

let me say a few things about some of you replies.

to the sayin someone is gay is bad, thats the name for it.  gay, homosexual, quer, fag, its all the same thing.  i said gay cause i thought it was the least insulting and everyone says it more than the others and is more commonly said. im sorry if i offended anyone.

since everyone is sayin what they think about bein gay is right or wrong i will tell you what i think.  i think it is wrong.  the reason i think its wrong is because you cannot reproduce.  you cant have a kid of your own.  sure you can adopt one but its not truly yours.  you are ending your bloodline.  your family tree has one less branch because of it. the world will get smaller and smaller when more people become gay.  there will be less reproducing.  what will happen when there is a nuclear holocaust and only gay people survive?  we could become extinct.  i know that is takin it a little too far and probably wont happen but think about it.  to clear a few things up i was talkin about the havin babies not just havin sex.    men and women were made different for a reason.  it doesnt matter what you believe in we were made different for a reason.  now to go against that is wrong in my opinion.  i think its just confusion in the brain or somthin.

now just because i dont agree with bein gay doesnt mean i have a problem with them.  i treat them the same as anyone else who isnt gay.  i dont pick fights or anything like that with them.  please dont go sayin i hate gays or stuff like that cause i dont.

well there are my thoughts on it.  please do not get offended by this as i was just merely expressing my opinon on this.  i have my thoughts and opinons as does everyone else.  we are all different.
