So, I was over at a friend's house playing the closed beta - and overall I'm impressed. I like the intro storylines and as a moderately devoted LOTR fan (loved the books and movies but haven't delved into "hardcore" Tolkien like the Simillarion) I was impressed with the game's feel and tone.
Here's my problem - I really want to break my ties to WOW but I'm not sure that LOTRO is "different" enough. For example, the early level combat seemed very similar to WOW, as did the quest system.
I'd like to hear from those who've made it a few levels into the closed beta about some of the things that make LOTRO really unique from WOW. I will say the trait system looks very cool, as do the titles, but I'm curious to find out how they work. Also, I'm curious to know if there's good class balance at upper levels or cooler armor (except for a few examples I really hated the starting armor).
I have three months left on my WOW account (like an idiot I let my subscription continue), but if there are compelling reasons to do so I'd be willing to eat the last $30 on WOW and go buy LOTRO.

This is by far more roleplay and casual minded plus the community is generally more mature.
If you play 40 hours a week you will burn out fast.
I treat LOTRO as a cozy casual game until Age of Conan or Warhammer releases but i have bought the lifetime account because then i always have a game to retun to and in time i'm sure this game will shine bright on the sky.
It just need some more endgame content first and a better craftsystem.

As far as content goes, there's nothing really in the way of raiding content. However, that's not to say that some won't be added in a few months time - it's just a shame Turbine didn't learn from the mistake Sony made releasing EQ2 with no end-game content.
The first player character I saw was called 'Elroond' - that didn't exactly impress me I'll be fair though, the other characters I saw were generally named reasonably. The guide at character creation kinda pushes an expectation on you to come up with certain name styles.
hmm, that must be US beta, because in europe beta last night i saw running around...................wait for it.........................................................ooopsididitagain!!
how fecking annoying!
grow up you twat!!
come on codemasters, kick em out.
You can't have 3 vowels in a row to prevent all those legooolas and so.
<Sprite|work> *Zoue* There's been a huge outcry on the Official and Beta Forums as well as accross the internet about the inability to create a character with 3 concurrent vowels in their name. Can you comment on this and what steps you are taking to rectify this gruesome situation?
<LOTRO_Patience> Zoue, you should see the picket line outside on your behalf. It breaks my heart every day to cross it.
<Mithril_Miser> Ah, Zoue. All I can tell you is that for every good name that's blocked, there are thirty Aragooorns and Laaagolases that get blocked. It's a noble sacrifice, and we salute you.

If you're looking for an alternative to WoW that is less of a time sink and lends itself a bit more to RP or game immersion then LOTRO will do you fine. If you're looking for something different to WoW, then i'd suggest waiting for another MMO such as Pirates Of The Burning Sea, Age Of Conan or Stargate.
LOTRO is so similar to WoW it's eerie, even down to small touches like CTRL+Right Click to see yourself in armour links, professions being almost identical, even the pet UI is the same.
There is also a concern with what LOTRO is going to offer in terms of end game content and if it can generate the same staying power as WoW, especially with some of the other MMO's coming that are trying to offer something truely different to WoW.
Personally, I'm still undecided despite having been in open beta since day 1 so will probably wait until they do the first update and look at what's added end game wise before looking myself. Ultimately I only see it as a stop gap before Age Of Conan or Chormicles Of Spellborn though.
CoH/CoV - D-Zol/Kinslayer
Auto Assault - Slayer
WoW, LOTRO, DDO - Kinsul
Matrix Online - Tempest

Actually turbine has stated that they are holding back elder play content for release. To give the beta testers something to look forward too. They also have selected testers who are testing the end game content in a special beta to work out the bugs. They do not plan on launching without end game content. It actually makes since to me. This way the vast majority of beta testers have something new to discover and look forward to after launch.
I felt compelled to jump in and make a simple comment:
If you presume that Turbine will be releasing content patches 1-2 times per month as they (supposedly) have said, who cares if there is end game content?
I like the idea of having raids for the social aspect; I would have to say most players I met want it for the greed (loot). Those of us who already read the forums already know that raiding won't grant you loot better than what you can craft. So again, who cares?
As long as there is enough content to keep a player involved in the game, there will be enough raids (or party quests) to keep the social aspect of raiding alive.
If you are a hardcore end-game raider, move along, as LOTRO (sounds like it) won't be for you. I am a former wow raider and I am embracing this as a VERY good thing!
