Thinking of giving this a shot! Got a few questions for all you vets.

Ok, I am just in the process of buying a new computer and starting up a new MMORPG.  I asked in general what would best fit my play style and had some really awesome answers. All the same, I have heard some pretty negitave things posted in various places and I wasn't sure if it was really worth the investment.

A bit of background. I've played WoW a nice bit (considering returning to it actually), Guild Wars and CoH. GW was fun but the level cap is 20 and it was SO EASY to get. I got 6 lvl 20 chars all with the best armor. It is a joke and the community as a whole are very childish. All the same my guild was great so the experience was enjoyable.  WoW is a great game, but for some reason it doesn't really "feel" right. I think I could be playing something else that is more "me". I am a casual player (about 20 hours a week) and I really enjoy the whole DnD concept. I wasn't a hardcore older player but I did play and I played the mini's game, love the concept.

So here's a few questions I have concerning the game, and hopefully you guys can help me out!

First off, how is the end game content? Is it just similar to a raid or is it all instance based? How is grouping and PuGs? Is there any solo activity? What can you do in towns, etc? Are there Auction Houses and is high end armor actually worthwhile? (GW was HORRID for this, a 10 million dollar item could be worse than a 5 p sword you craft. Its all about the looks).  Basically I am curious if there are things to do, apart from just the instances. I know (or at least have heard) that you basically just start off in a city, but there is no "outside" world per say. Everything is instances, similar to Guild Wars (is how I picture it) so maybe you vets can share some insight.

Also, is the game fun, especially for a casual player? How is the player base? Also, are the servers populated well enough that starting off, you could still get groups and advance well or are there only a few thousand players and grouping is rather difficult? The one thing that is both good and bad about WoW, all their servers are basically populated enough that getting groups is rather simple. Still in a game where I figure most of it is done in groups, I figure this would be pretty important aspect.

Anyways, thats pretty much all I can think of for now. I know a lot of people have a love it/hate it relationship with this game but I heard it's come a long ways... Hopefully thats the case! Oh, one last question (sorry for the onslaught) what is the current level cap and is it hard to obtain? I heard it was very low, GW's was low and you could power level to 20 in a few hours....

Thanks for everyone who replied! Sorry for so many questions and such a long post!

There is a free trial for this game that will probably answer most of your questions.    The game runs very stable and you should probably have a fun week with the game even if you decide not to subscribe.  I agree sliming needs to get recognition for poster of the month.

I ttried this game as well. Currently it sits on my shelf along with RFO and Vanguard. Personally not my type of game, but I would try to get a trial before spending any serious 'gold'.

Sounds like you completely missed the point of GW -- it's not a "levels" game, it's a "skills" game. The point is very much like Magic: the Gathering -- to build the best "deck" of skills that fit your playstyle and the party's needs. The only thing that "level 20" means in GW is that your character should be able to survive the rest of the PvE content, and/or be PvP competitive.

Regardless, I will probably try out the DDO trial myself in a few weeks if my work schedule calms down a bit. I did enjoy AD&D as a kid, but I'm not a rules and stats guru, and I'm leary that DDO would want me to be that way. Although I just retired from WoW because I dislike forced grinding (not that it seems to be a problem in DDO from what I've read) and I'm not fond of gear-based games like WoW and 99% of other fantasy MMORPGs where it doesn't matter what your abilities as a player are, or what skills your character has, he who has the best gear wins, period. Which in turn simply encourages grinding for gear, which bores me to tears.  Given what I remember of D&D with it's +3 Axe of Hacking or +2 Sword of Slashing, DDO is likely a gear game simply on basis of its IP. But I'd at least like to see it.
