mmorpg and vista

herculeshercules Member UncommonPosts: 4,925

ok decided to make a thread so we can have some idea of vista performance with games

if posting please add the systems you used and if you had to tweak settings to get it to work.

Systems used - athlon 3500+,2gb,x1900xt

                             athlon 3500+,2gb,x850xt

                             intel 6600,2gb,geforce 8800gts

1)EQ2- loaded up with zero hassle on all systems, about same performance as windows xp

2)WoW- loaded up no hassles on all but intel system.required a few tweaks with driver on intel system but worked fine after.same performance as win xp

3)planetside- loaded up but lost 50% performance with athlon 3500 with x850xt.Rest 2 loaded but about 10-15% fps lose

4)vanguard- required loads of tweaking to stop frequent crashes.Horrible dip in performance in all 3 system.(last tested about 10 days ago).As of last tests still crashes the intel 6600 often.I can add a athlon 5200,2gb,8800gts also to test list which was a build for my brother but only tried it for 1 day though.Same issues.

So share your experience with vista and mmorpg ,folks.

Have my Vista upgrade disk I got for free, but not loading it into my machine for a few more months. Waiting until I know most of the stuff on my pc will support it. Plus Windows XP is just fine thanks.

tbh i recommend using xp and keeping your vista disk safe .

in a few months it will be quite good but atm it shows little/no performance improvement and some games just run horribly on it atm.

like the other two guys said there really is no reason to buy vista right now. it is pretty much just a theme update right now. you won't see a benefit from vista (especially from a gaming stand point ) for at least a year.

I run Vista on an XP3000, 2Gig, X800 system. I had to remove my SB Live 5.1 that I had had installed for a couple of years due to driver issues. Creative had no drivers available, and I dont believe they intend to write drivers for that card which is now dated. I managed to find soem 3rd party drivers for this sound card, but was not able to get my microphone to work and as a full time gamer I use ventrilo at all times as do many others. I bought a $30 generic sound card and Vista installed it with its own drivers. After the sound card was working I had no further hardware issues and my system was performing very well.

I reinstalled all the MMO's I currently play (EVE, AO, WoW, EQ2), and the FPS's I currently play (CS:S and AA). I have no performance degredation whatsoever. I would go so far as to suggest that in fact, my system is running great. The only time I have crashed the system (though I almost never crashed my system since the days of ME and is less OS specific) is when I installed Second Life. I realised after, when I checked the site for known issues, that SL did not support Vista.

I use more system resources when idling, at desktop that I would in XP, but overall performance in regards to gaming is positive. I see no ill effect from having upgraded, and am extremely satisified with Vista on a whole. I have read comments on numerous sites claiming Vista is just Win XP with a graphic upgrade, and it's just not true. Those comments are coming from people who obviously don't use it. Someone who is running Vista, and is not knew to PC's in general will most probably be aware in a short time that it is more.

To be honest though, I was actually very happy with my system running XP. If Vista were really just a visual upgrade on XP, did we really need more? I think XP fulfilled most peoples' needs and served as a good stable platform. However, there are features in Vista which make it good to use. For argument sake, I could say the start menu is better, for me at least. I like the instant search and the way that the start menu's sub menus open inside itself, rather than branching out over my screen. That is but one new thing which I consider to be an improvement for the better.

As I said, my games run as good as they ever did, and my Vista looks a lot nicer than XP did. I had to change one hardware component to get my system running, but then it was a dated piece which should have been thrown out anyway.

Hehe, Vanguard + Vista = computer suicide.

Personally, until the graphics people get their drivers sorted out, you don't want to put Vista on a game machine.   It might run the game you are currently playing but there are definite issues with many of the games out there.

I run Vista, and all my games run the same as they did on XP so far. This is on a highend system though, 2 gigs of Crucial Ballistix, Core 2 Duo E6300, 7900GS. I dont expect the same results on stuff "dated" as people like to call it now.

the only place vista beats out xp is multi processor set up performance, doesn't change other issues such as eating your ram, GPU cycles, and probably a few other things.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Matrix Online has severe graphical glitches with Vista.  Non working cinematics and blackened screenshots.

Every other MMO I played right now (EVE, CoH, and EQ2) works like a charm

Also....non MMO... NwN2 plays fine too
