Uhmm.... Errrr.... If I knew a good MMO i would be playing in it instead of posting.
Guild Wars
City of Heroes
Those are two great MMOs, but they dont have the longevity that something like WoW or EQ2 does.
I call them situational MMOs, if you want a good fight and to pound on something: CoH. If you want a good game to solo a bit or some good PvP , play Guild Wars a bit.
I am looking forward to Lord of the Rings Online though, it might pass the time till WAR comes out.
Try EverQuest II. It had a somewhat shaky start, but in my opinion has become a top-notch game this past year. It is by no means perfect, but it is a lot better than most of the other offerings.
You could wait a bit for the chronicles of spellborn, it launches in may i think and open beta is at april 22nd
"It's no good coming to our game if you are trying to grow weed, It's no good coming to our game if you want to make pants. It's only worth coming to our game if you want to burn things to the ground." -Paul Barnett, WAR is coming
If you're just looking for something temporary, then I agree with Tyfreaky. Guild Wars or City of Heroes. City of Heroes is a good game, but it never struck me as a longterm hobby. Guild Wars is also very good, and you don't have to pay subscription fees. Granted, GW is NOT an MMO, as all content is instanced. Cities are persistant, but are little more than char rooms with 3D graphics.
You could also check out the dozens of asian, free-to-pay imports. Some are moderately decent, and you don't have to pay anything unless you want some items from their online shop. One word of warning, free games attract some of the worst communities, so you might find yourself surrounded by noobs, jerks, and griefers. And the pedophilic-anime look of some of them are a definite turn-off (and a little creepy). But hey, it's free.
If MMOs are not the only thing you're interested in, I can suggest several PS2 games that are worthwhile. Okami, Rogue Galaxy, FFXII, and even God of War II (came out yesterday).
Seriously. It's Are'el. This forum doesn't allow apostrophes in usernames.

Haha, I agree.
I don't think ANY MMO out today is anything for me. Sad but true... There are many marvelous ones but none that contains the atmosphere I want.
SWG was the best game I had ever played. This sounds very weird for many but it could be because it was so unique and my first real MMORPG.
I currently have a blast with Battlefield 2142. And no other game. Except a little Resident Evil Outbreak File#2 on PS2 and a little Wii in between.

An MMO to tide you over until WAR comes out? Try Guild Wars...since you only want it to tide you over, you won't have to pay a monthly subscription. It's pretty enjoyable and by the time you end up getting a little bored of it (if you do) then WAR should be out. If you wanted something to invest a little more in then I'd give CoH/CoV a try. If you weren't so against WoW I would suggest that with the BC expansion.
If you don't necessarily need an MMO then what about the other WarHammer games?
As was mentioned, The Chronicles of Spellborn should be out relatively soon and looks to be a pretty unique MMORPG. Check it out.
Of course, if you're really not committed to a particular MMO, it might always be better to just play games that don't require a subscription until you find one you really like.
If you want a real harsh death penalty, go play Russian Roulet. - Hamzal
I know I've posted this on a bunch of threads, but I'm trying to be selective as to those that I think might find it useful.
I can't wait for WAR either. But I found a nice destructive, casual game to help me bide the time. Many on the members of these forums will advise you against it, and I'm not here to chastise anyone for what they do or don't like.
What am I going to do, is provide you with an alternative that I think is a no-brainer.
Currently, you can buy the LE DvD version of Auto Assault (which includes a Creative gaming headset) for a little over $3. If you want the Prima guide as well, it'll set you back a grand total of $6.70 (add $3.40 shipping+tax and Amazon.com).
Or, if you prefer, you can do the 14-day trial.
Either way, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how fun this game has become. Granted, the community is 1/10,000 the size of WoW (and I might be on the high side with that assumption), but the players that are there are really helpful.
I'm assuming of course, by the fact that you are awaiting WAR, that you don't mind blood and gore and/or destruction of all kinds. If, in the rare event that you don't care for utter chaos, then it might be best that you avoid Auto Assault
Auto Assault is probably the most "fun" MMORPG I've ever played in the purest sense of the word, but when I left it, the community was so barren that it barely qualified as an MMO. You could pretty much solo the entire game; this isn't a bad thing, as I like to solo for the most part if I'm not in a good guild of friends, but there was really no reason to convoy (group) with other players, and the very mechanics of the game (driving all over vast landscapes in fast-moving vehicles) didn't fit group-play to begin with.
From what I've read, they've added a whole bunch of new content since the game was released, but I'm not going back to it unless they adopt a free-to-play model. Again, it's fun, but very shallow fun and not worth a monthly subscription. Of course, since you can find the game for so cheap (hell, most EB's and Gamestops give it away free with the purchase of any PC game) and you get 30 days free, you might as well check it out. Maybe they've turned it around since I left, but the game just wasn't worth a subscription fee in my opinion, and it seemed constantly on the verge of collapse (which I still wouldn't put out of the realm of possibility; this thing is BLEEDING money, and I don't know how long NCSoft is going to keep propping it up).

No good news on the "free to play" front Lithdov...sorry.
Still, they are offering previous subscribers the opportunity to come and experience the new content for 10 days starting on March 16th!
Hard to pass up a little bit of meaningless violence, right?
I tried the 14-day free trial of Auto Assault, and I have to admit that it was pretty fun for a while. But by my 7th day, I found myself exceedingly bored out of my mind. It suffers from a great deal of "sameness." I also thought that the gameplay and interface didn't lend itself too well to player interaction, but that might have also been due to the low population. I tried grouping a few times, but it felt unsatisfying.
It's not a game for everyone. Try the trial first. The game seems designed for short bursts of gameplay, an hour or two every couple of nights. That would probably cancel out the repetitiveness of it. I play hardcore hours, so it simply didn't suit me.

Absolutely agree. I'm one of those "hour or two" gamers. What I don't quite get though, is how is it any different than every other MMO in the case of repetitiveness? Whether you swing a sword, shoot a bow, handle a light-saber, or fire an auto-cannon, don't they all have a tendancy to become repetitive after a while?
At least with Auto Assault I can pretty much interact with EVERYTHING in the environment. I've never seen that in an MMO before. Every signpost, wall, building, person (hehe), tower that's NOT in friendly command can be blown to bits! Woohoo!
After posting on this thread, I decided to try my lineage 2 trial that I have had for about two years...
Errrr.... I have not even gotten to the PVP part but I'm not to thrilled with the game i just feels way to much like RF online. And Archlord and pretty much every Korean MMO I have ever played.
The translations are iffy. the races dont really feel all that different besides the looks...
I would not really recommend Lineage 2 to tide you over. I will play it for a few more days and see if it gets any better, but as of right now..

I'm waiting for my MMO of choice as well. In the meantime I've been playing dreamlords and find it rather interesting. It's not the most polished of games but the game play is something unique and I've found it to be refreshing.
I was looking for an MMO to tide me over until WAR comes out, but instead I am getting a lot of projects done that I know I will not do when WAR is officially released.
You said you did not want to play WoW again, here are some options I could recommend:
- Dark Age of Camelot (Mythic did this as well, maybe play to get an idea about their game design *shrug*
- Guild Wars (no monthly fee last time I checked, also they have collision detection in place, might allow for some good pvp practice in tactics knowing you cant run straight through the tanks to get to the casters)
- EVE Online (if you are feeling like a space MMO)
I have not played EQ2 but a few friends of mine have and enjoyed it.
Or you can be like some of my friends and order a bunch of Warhammer Fantasy books and read them, and play Warhammer Mark of Chaos and just get immersed in Warhammer Lore/content. lol

Dreamlords is ok but defenately should be free to play... the rts aspect leave much to be desired... and paying what 19 dollars for a browser game isn't worth it. If they had a free month of play they wouldn't have gotten my money... but since it's already paid for I'm playing the market in the browser portion.
Of course, if you're really not committed to a particular MMO, it might always be better to just play games that don't require a subscription until you find one you really like.
I am doing the grindfest in the freebie Rappelz...it's free and well put together
Was going back to Lineage but heck why pay to grind

I'd recommend to check out Daoc. It's still the best mmorpg so far imo

that is what is holding me over at this point.
Other then that, I have thought about checking out DAOC again.

Omg that's so true xD
Can i hear an Amen to that ?
I'm actually looking for an MMO to play too until WAR is out.
I was thinking about Age of Conan but since I saw today it's been delayed.
I've got my sights on Lord of the Rings Online at the moment, or possible Dungeon Runners or Chronicles of the Spellborn.
Whatever's released first really!
I could recommend Guild Wars: Nightfall though, I really liked the campaign (as opposed to the first 2).
Gods and Hereos is coming soon, look s interesting and you get to have mythical creatures as your minions.
ill probably get that to hold me over.
