Had the most strange and vivid dream last night

RazorbackRazorback Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 5,253

I was standing like on a hillside or something with some other folks, not even sure who they were.

We were watching a huge city in the process of being destroyed and since the buildings were collapsing from explosions I kinda reasoned it was terrorism of some sort. At that point I wasnt concerned, in fact we were having a kind of "oooooh, aaaah" experience like watching fireworks. It was night.

Then it started to get really odd....

I remember looking up at the sky for a moment and seeing a large ghostly looking skull shape. Not really defined but like a cloud that you can see the shape in it. Then as I looked I noticed lots of them starting to appear. It was at this point I remember feeling scared. Then someone said "its the end" or something to that effect.... then it got REALLY strange.

The sky like clouded right over and in the patches between the clouds I could see a greeny kind of background with some sort of massive (miles big) monster, that I could only make out bits of moving above the clouds. I looked back at the city and people were like being herded or something, but they were all moving out toward us. We were miles away but you could see them like ants, there were tens of thousands. The horizon behind them was just blood red up to about the level of the clouds then it got that green look. You could see the "thing" moving up there.

Someone else said "this is it, its time" I remember it like it was written down.

Ive kinda gotta hand it to myself because I sort of realised I am indeed a true unrepentent aetheist. Because I said "well its a pretty inconvenient time to be an aetheist isnt it". I also realised that now I had been proven dead wrong in the worst possible way I was also prepared to submit myself to whatever was coming to me for being such a filthy heretic.

My next thoughts were.... "why now", "why couldnt I have lived in the generations that enjoyed the world while they were alive instead of being around to see this"

Then I woke up.... and MAN!! I have never been so relieved to wake up.....

I rolled over and hugged my wife, who said.... "dont get any ideas"

I cuddled my dogs and thanked "whoever" it was only a dream....

Havnt had anything like before in my life.... hope I dont have it again and I certainly hope its just a result of my constant attention to the topic and nothing more...

Our brains are very strange.... I cant stop thinking about it

    All hail the new Messiah!

Well, if you don't feel like starting a cult regarding your vision, and you certainly should, here's a bullshit dream interpretation site's take on your dream.  There's no scientific basis to any of this stuff, but it's an interesting read, a bit like looking at your fortune.

Personally, I think dreams of apocalypse scenarios are a result of an imbalance of humours, definitely pointing toward a melancholic temperament.  Drinking more beer should solve this.

    That's my scholarly advice, anyway.

but yeah, its a freaky dream. I'm not surprised though, with religions claiming apocalypse and the rapture here and there, Mayan calender 2012 and such.

You probably just have deep rooted subconscious fears about the fact that you are an athiest and deep down you're scared about the Rapture coming and you being screwed over.

Probably, I don't think its really something to be ashamed of. If a religious person dies and he was wrong about his faith, then tough luck, but nothing happens. If an atheist is wrong about his "faith", then dude, your screwed. seriously.

    Yes thats certainly it.

I was reading an article in National Geo the other day about Leibovitch Jews in Brooklyn. The guy who leads them believes that by returning people to orthodox jewish practices he will hasten the return of "the messiah"

I was thinking... man thats CRAP!!

Why would you want to see the extinction of most of your fellow human beings that dont follow your stuff ??

Thats not a holy aspiration, thats delusions of genocidal granduer.

I guess part of me actually worried about whether he was right.

That's a pretty vivid dream, and even more strange that you had dreams of something falling out of the sky, I recommend that you go read revelation if you havn't already to see what I am talking about.

I'm not saying that you had any kind of prophetic vision, but the coincidence is eerie

Dreams can certainly give you a scare or dazzle you big time.

I had my share of dreams that felt so real, I felt pain, pleasure and many other things.

But one particular dream I remember like it was a real memory of something that actually happened.

I was sitting at my computer playing DotA when I started to hear an airplane flying really low, so I went out on the balcony and I saw a plane that was about to crash, thick blacksmoke came from the engines.

I could feel the air trembling and I shouted at my mom and sister that an airplane was looking like it were about to crash right into our apartment, it was a big airplane so we moved to the kitchen at the opposite side of the apartment and the plane crashed into the house infront of us, we got pushed by the shockwave, the windows was blown in and I could feel the heat and the impact of my body hitting the floor.

After a minute, I went outside in shock to witness the devestation, neighbours came up to me and talked to me so it felt like it was real, not even once did I believe that it was a dream.

I talked with people for awhile and then I just woke up, I believed I did but my door to the room look different and it wouldnt open, this usually happens when I'm trying to get out of a dream by waking up or when a dream abruptly stops, it starts a loop of me waking up but the door to my room is different everytime and it won't open, it's like the same re-occuring dream I had when I was younger about a neighbourhood that looked like my own but all the people and all the apartment werent the same and I was lost running around trying to find home.

Ive read revalations several times. Thats how I kind of immediately knew what was going on when I saw the thing in the sky.

Never really gave it credit for having any effect on my phsyce.... but clearly it has.

Which is why I really need to watch out how these forums affect my psyche...I can almost always go and find an easy answer to questions posed to me...but sometimes it's a little bit more difficult than others and sometimes I think to myself..."maybe there's no answer for this one?"  Then I usually find it a day or two later when I'm not even really looking for it.

    I know what your saying.

I pound my brain with the "who are we and where are we from" question, day in day out. I read things that both support and challenge my beliefs.

Its no real surprise my brain decided to have a little fun with me.

I dont think it was a coincidence at all that you dreamed that. We all know what the end of the world will look like according to religious beliefs. I know I have a very vivid picture of what the world will look like during the "end times." If this is a manifestation about your fears of being wrong as an athiest, it would make sense that you'd imagine what you would normally imagine the worlds end as.

As a non-believer, I am not really worried. I believe that if God is really there, He's a good guy and he'd be able to understand why I believe the things I believe. If He doesnt... well, chances are very good that I would have followed the wrong religion anyway and I'd end up in the same place.

But I certainly hope you dont become religious out of fear. That is a shame... when people become religious just because they are scared of the consequences.

But by doing that, you to, help people understand questions they may not believed an answer exists for.

I admire any christian that can sit down with me and put up with my arrogance, its not intentional, im just a naturally curious person. The most important thing in the world is diversity, more important than anything else. There is no point in having a belief if you cant question it every once in a while... i know i question my beliefs quite regularly, it inspires faith from belief.

Your questions have never come across as arogant or annoying, I gladly answer honest questions from curious people...it's when people get into the whole "religion is stupid and if religion would go away the world would just be a better place" thing that I get pissed off..because it's extremely arrogant and ignorant on their part.

I imagine that right now, you are feeling a bit like Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole, I can see it in your eyes.

You have look of man who accepts what he sees because he's expecting to wake up. Ironically this is not far from the truth.

This is your last chance. After this there is no turning back.

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in wonderland and I will show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

Next time you dream you will see two oak trees standing side by side facing toward you, one will be called Shechem, the other Yad Avsh., As much as things seem to be troubling to you, as long as you make your turn and head yourself towards Shechem at the end of the road everything will be fine. Someone will even be there to greet you.

strange.... I had a lucid dream last night in which I pissed on my pillow.   I really hope that it never happened, for the pillow's sake.

I get strange dreams all the time, I blame them on the drugs and my very strange and vivid imagination..

Yes and her reaction was basically "what do you expect" given the amount of time you spend thinking about it. (the "big question" that is)

She is probably even more of a complete unbeliever than me if anything. She frankly wont even entertain a discussion on the topic. Her position is basically that of Jefferson's most revealing quotes "To talk of immaterial existences is to talk of nothings" etc. im just about a beliver in her eyes because I even entertain the question.

I once had a dream a couple of years ago which was so vivid and "real" that its stayed with me to this day. In the dream I was observing myself from a third person perspective, although I looked nothing like I do now, I somehow knew that it was me. I was also aware that the dream was taking place in the far future, though I couldn't come up with any clear date or even general idea of how far in the future I was. The dream itself was actually very short, I was some kind of government or corporate official being taken on a tour through a deep space facility. I was taken to the bridge of the ship, or station, or whatever it was, a very impressive place dominated by a transparent dome which allowed me to look out into space. My guide began a tutorial of the facility's surveillance system, which basically converted the transparent dome into a monitor which allowed us to zoom in on any planet in our solar system, and view any given coordinates on said planet, live, within seconds. The dream ended there, and when I woke up, I was soked in sweat and really quite shaken.

Personally I don't really dream anything cohesive very often, so that dream, as vivid and realistic as it was, made quite the impression on me. Who knows how our brains come up with this stuff, and for what reason....

It’s odd that you started to think of religion what if it were an alien race using mans weakness (god) to enslave us like the gou'uld (spelling?) from stargate...

anyway as a fellow atheist ill say this maybe its your sub consciousness spiritual side in need of some attention try finding a none religious book on spirituality or find something on the web to feed your "soul" I know I need to from time to time

So, we can look at your dream and say it was influenced by what you've read in Revelation and maybe other sources, but then where did they come from? Someone at some point had a dream or vision of such things in the first place, which didn't have such influences. I know this doesn't "prove" anything, as we know the mind is pretty creative, but where did such ideas and imagary come from originally?

If this is coupled with a lot of "who are we and where are we from" questions then you pretty much have two options.

    1. Hope it all goes away, maybe read some good atheistic material and protect yourself as best you can from whatever might be going on with you spiritually, perhaps get some drugs from a psychiatrist to numb your brain a bit if it's being a little overactive in its imagination.

    2. Consider that maybe whoever or whatever God is, is trying to reach out to you, and open yourself up (which can be humiliating and scary) and try to listen to the voice that is speaking to you. A lot of people claim to have had experiences of God through dreams and visions or through spiritual revelations - perhaps this might be what you are experiencing too.

    ..

the only dreams i remotely remember is me on some star-trek like mission through the universe with me becoming immortal. I then return to earth and blow up the planet with my thumb..?

don't blame my imagination, i think it is destiny that this will all happen.

Wow, thats screwed up. I've dreamt of my death, and the end of the world quite a few times, but I don't ever remember looking at a city blowing up and thinking "Fireworks".

I have really vivid dreams though. Everything is so real, even if it really is completely fake. However, I usually for some reason, get the weirdest most realistic feeling ones when I'm sleeping somewhere different than normal. LIke, sleeping on a friend's couch, I've dreamt of best friends shooting at me with cell phones, a lawsuit as a result, and a large party at the local public pool, and of course, aliens, all at the same time. Still I get topics such as Star Wars, swordfights, giant death ray beams, secret meetings with friends, Third-person basketball games, and spiders in my day to day dreaming. Every night is an adventure.

Im halfway through reading Richard Dawkins God Delusion so Im pretty right for strong aetheist reading material lol.

Thats an excellent point about the first person who envisioned revalations not having a previous experience or reading to go on. But I guess we dont really know about that in detail. Maybe it was a collection of end of days myth type tales he had heard and it all came together in his mind.

Im amazed, enthralled and constantly fascinated by the way our brains mess with us. Stimulations of all kinds, ranging from the most insignificant instances that we dont even remember having, like driving past a building with a small advertisment in the window and not even mentally acknowledging it. Then later seeing the product and feeling more comfortable with it than we would have because our brain recognizes it, even if we dont realise.

I was pretty.... um adventurous with all sorts of things in my teens and 20s. It lead me to read a lot of stuff like this :

    http://www.castaneda.com/

He was basically into the belief that controling your dreams was the key to eternal life. Read it.... its interesting.
