Holy Cow Batman!! People talk about WoW's success, how did this super successful game fly under the radar. It must be earning billions.
No it isn't. You just got fooled by Asian way of "counting" their customers.
Same as RO that supposedly has what? 56 millions?
Fact is they either count accounts ever created (so not active subs), character ever created or some other borked up stat.
Not to mention that being a f2p game, it is kinda hard to count. I mean it cost nothing to make an account and it stay active all the time in theory, but they are making 0 money from those too.
So.... borked up. like most of those games' counting is.
"If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime"
Ofcourse not, the ones using bots would be gold farmers, and 90% of the game's population is in asia, and there is no money to be gained there by gold sellers.
Wether they are bots or whatever, 70 million created accounts is still pretty damn amazing. WoW can't even say they have that many. Of course free to play games will always have more people, bot, real, or ect. That's why when WoW always says 8 million plus, I laugh and go, "Big deal". When you can get into these type of numbers(70 million), I'm might go, "Well gee, they have earned my respect now afterall." Until then..Long live free to play games!
Yes, but if you compare which game is making more money and has the respect of a majority of the gaming community, World of Warcraft beats Scions of Fate into the ground with a rather large cudgel. And yes, they are counting every account that was EVER created - World of Warcraft is counting active participants in their servers, which is consistently growing larger, by as much as 1.5 million per year. I don't think Scions of Fate would claim that if they were P2P.

Umm, 8,5 million CURRENT players is much more impressive then 70 accounts created. WoW has more current paying members then SoF has playing members.
Yeah, Asian MMOs really use trumped up stats to gain popularity.
2 accounts they are counting are mine and I havent played for a couple months. When I first heard about it I played it, stopped playing then later decided to play again but forgot my password so I made a new account. I played accumulatively for about 5 days.
When it comes to Asian free to download MMOs don't trust the numbers they give.
well I did sign to that game a while back, I played maybe 4 hours worth. I can log in anytime I want, so I guess that makes me a subscriber. Almost played a couple days ago since I was too lazy to put a game cd in my rom drive. Instead I logged into eve and freightered around some ships for my brother.
Maybe we should make a new thing about how many hours a month people play games, then we can equally compare free to play games and the ones that cost money
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You? if I were to kill a titan tomorrow and no CCP employees showed up to say grats I would petition it. Waiting for: the next MMO that lets me make this macro if hp < 30 then CastSpell("heal") SpellTargetUnit("player") else CastSpell("smite") end
Good point JackDonkey! I have now been playing GE beta and LOTRO beta for quite awhile now. But have an WOW account I paid for for the 6 months, and haven't been on it for months. Got tired of it, needed something new. Does that mean WOW is not an accurate count of players?

World of Warcraft®'s Subscriber Definition
World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.
In short if you have time left on your account and have not bothered to "cancel" the account then your counted, if your acount has no time left is banned or canceled then your not counted. Simple and straight up. Slightly different in Asia though, there your counted if you have played within the last 30 days (pay per hour).
Asia is HUGE market...thats why mmos like wow and eve has been trying to get there...
Subscriptions in Asia cost next to nothing, either free with item shop or then like 10c/hour played thats why asian mmo's get on such huge numbers...I remember Lineage2 asia reporting 20 million subscribers.

Lineage does well but not that good.
As of January 2007
Lineage - 1,408,170 subs worldwide
Lineage 2 - 1,036,303 subs worldwide (105,039 in US + EU)
I really don't see why it's hard to believe that a game mainly played in Asia would have so many millions of players? They do have a large population after all, and mmo's are great. I can believe games like Perfect World has 30 million subsrcibers. After all WOW has over 8 million.

In reality, the millionish figure they give is the number of avatars created, not the number of paying or even total active subscriptions.

I bet half of the 70 million are bots.
Stupid advertising actually.. its like 1000PMPO vs 1000RMS
All canceled. Waiting on Warhammer Online : Age of Reckoning.
