Characters

Question, how many characters can we make and does anyone know if extra characters cost money like the stupid FFXI?

Its an interesting question you should hold onto it for a bit..they're still in internal stages so there's no word on how character creation works and how many slots we get.  I hope we get more than one.

I think they have mentioned that if you created a Chaos side character on one server you couldn't play Order side on that server so ..I'm pretty sure we get more than one char!

That would be my assumtion too (about the more than one char but not on the same alliance on the same server).  I think there would be too many chances to abuse the pvp/rvr system with allowing players to have characters on both sides (of course people are going to get around it buy buying a second account or whatever).

    Oh well.

How do you get more "rating"?

I'm more interested in the character creation system myself. I figure it won't be as detailed as say Age of Conan's but hopefully you'll have more options than you did with WoW when creating your character.

I remember Sanya posting they are aiming for 8-10 per server but nothing is set in stone at all for how many you will get.

And yes, it will function pretty much just like DAoC before the server clusters. If you create an Order character on a server, you will not be able to create any Destruction characters on that server without deleting all of your Order characters first.

Most games are now giving players an average of 6 character slots per server.

It has been found that this increases the longevity of the game a good bit. Games that only gave you one or two slots per server (or in some cases period) were found to be a bit... constraining, especially when they started charging for extra slots

Some games, do not really require you to get extra slots since everyone can get every skill or class ( EVE, SWG [before the NGE] and FF11 ), these games tend to charge you for extra slots.

Then there are games like Guild Wars, which give you a decent amount of slots, plus extra slots for certain expansions AND you can also purchase additional slots.

As I mentioned earlier, it increases a games longevity (in the long run) to basically give you unlimited character slots so you can play as many types of characters as you wish. WoW does have a limit of total characters (10 per server) you can have (50 total), but if you manage to get 50 characters to lvl 70 you have WAY to much time on your hands

I do not believe that WAR will break this trend, especially due to the popularity of  WoW, and the fact that there game is based on PVP, and its rather easy to get bored with that type of characte. Giving you the ability to play multiple characters for free would just make good business sense and increase the amount of time players wish to spend in their game.

Giving people more slots may be a good thing for the longetivity indeed, but than you also stimulate twinking i guess. or do you ALWAYS level up by killing stuff? also your enemys?

I've been curious about this as well.  We know that each of the classes have distinct appearances, even within thier own race.  A Chosen looks nothing like a Magus, for example.  Bright Wizards have always been shown to us as having orange hair.  So how much customization will they allow?  Even if certain elements remain the same ib a class, I hope that there are plenty of options.  One particular option I always like to see is height differences, even if they are minor.  For the most part, customization is covered up by armor, and people have the zoom all the way out.  But height is something that is always visible.

    Seriously.

Since equipment in general will cover up your character in lots of ways, I hope they include a LOT of types of equipment. Like WoW, but without the sometimes plastique or downright silly looks of equipment. But since everyone starts out pretty much the same, I hope as well that the devs implement a robust beginning-character customization system focusing on what will be most visible on a character post-equipment: the face, and constitution. Loads of eye options, facial forms, maybe expressions, hair, and so on. A nice height slider or something as well as a weight slider (who doesn't want to be a greasy, fat goblin shaman?? ), both limited of course by the race of choosing (no fat elves, but maybe some 'robust' ones, and no skinny orcs, but maybe 'athletic' ones which grow anyway as all orcs do but can still look a bit different than others).
