...and let you all know that i just bought the game. I'm still waiting for it to arrive but i'm pretty optimistic about the game. Not so much that it will be the best i every played (then again it might be). No, i'm excited because it is an MMO i have never tried before and that it is not a fantasy MMO.

So there you have it! You guys chocked yet?

No.....but do tell us how it goes i also never tried this game. It always good to hear fresh reviews from someone who just jumped into a game.

Well , let me know how it goes.I left Matrix ages ago (various reasons) and have been meaning to look it up again!

you should have bought it from direct2drive.  Its cheap, and you can download the game.

Good luck with it, always interesting to hear a newbie's comments on a game.

this game isnt all that great.  you will get bored pretty fast.  there just isnt enough to do in this game.  it looks cool thats about it.  its missing playability.  SOE totally screwed this game up.
  • SeanDavisSeanDavis Member Posts: 412
Just a question, did it have more playability under Monolith, or what? I mean, if you don't refer to live events.
  • TetraClericTetraCleric Member Posts: 20
No, it didnt.  But you have to also remember that the game was new then as well.  PvP was only introduced on a system outside of the archives during the last 3 days of Beta.  Live Events were introduced at the same time, and the LET did a tremendous job of bringing players into the story arc.  Less people were capped at the level, less people had all the abilities.  There were items that were put into the game solely for release that even the original beta testers had never seen.

Around the time that we learned of Monolith selling to Sony was when the game really started to go downhill.  The servers couldnt handle the stress put on them from events.  PvP was becoming mindless killing and griefing.  And the weakness that the Developers had were becoming more and more apparent as certain people were given certain priveledges.  (spelling also seemed to go out the window lololololollololololhahahahahahahahaha jk_)

Do I believe SoE ruined the game?  Yes I do.

Rather than fix what was wrong with the current combat system, they pulled out some old idea from Monolith, and had it implemented.  Rather than keep what the players wanted most, they threw them away.

Perhaps most fault lies with Monolith, but SoE is just as guilty.

Well okay guys, first impression of the game!

I just installed it and played for about 30 min, going through the tutorial and some missions.

I know that i am supposed to give it more time but i can't... i just can't play this game. Oh my god! Everything feels so wrong - everything from camera, to combat and the lack of sound. Heck, you can't even press ESC to get rid of open windows.

Now, i can't find anything in the manual so i guess there is no way to reconfigure the keys? I mean... i can't even remap my damn keys so i have to use the once they have specified for me, that's plain torture! Graphics wise the game looks okaybut the combat is slow, choppy and totally without feeling. During the tutorial the speech disappeared several times and while in the game the sound effects are just not there... i hear music but no SFX - at times though they do pop up. I hate that i can't go into first person mode and that the controls and camera seem to lag. Also the tutorial as such was awful on to many accounts to mention here...

Wow you know what? I really don't want to flame this game too much but after been playing 10-15 different MMOs, this one is the worst. It's even more so that RF Online which i hated because it just felt wrong to play... no feeling at all, no game play. I have a 30 day free subscription so i will try the game some more but i have already cancelled my subscription. People who love MMOs stay away. People who love the Matrix, as i do, please stay away, you will only be disappointed. If you like sci-fi then try either SWG, which plays much better and probably has more diversity , EVE online if you like space games or City of Heroes if you want something similar to the Matrix, again much better...

I don't know what else to say and to those who like the game as it is - i'm sorry for flaming your it but you must agree that the Matrix plays bad.

Just be glad you didn't have to grind xp.

The leveling process in this game fails UN standards of torture. Even Don Rumsfeld said it's excessive punishment for gitmo detainees. It's a shame there aren't many Sci-Fi mmo's and that this one failed.

No, but you can press the keys with which you also activate them. For example, "N" for missions, or "I" for inventory.

You can also press Ctrl+U to get rid of all UI on your screen, by the way.

The only bad apple is the chat/system window, which you can activate by pressing Enter, but can't deactivate with a key.

It'll also appear everytime you press Ctrl+U again to activate the UI, just to annoy you.

    Otherwise, everything's smooth here.

It might help if you described your problems with the camera, because I can't quite imagine what you mean. If you have problems with non-combat/combat camera, there are a few options you can select between.

With the default settings, the camera follows you either with the right-mouse-run, or with the arrow keys run. Anyways, more details please.

Lack of sound? Hmm. There is lack of sound in the city apart from cars, except when it rains, where you hear rain and thunder effects.

Now, i can't find anything in the manual so i guess there is no way to reconfigure the keys? I mean... i can't even remap my damn keys so i have to use the once they have specified for me, that's plain torture!

You can easily reconfigure your keys. I think you have to click on the field with the key command, and then simply press the new one you want. Or maybe type it. Something like that.

Graphics wise the game looks okaybut the combat is slow, choppy and totally without feeling.

Maybe you'll change your mind when you've reached level 10 and get access to martial arts styles - because I bet you're talking about the "Self Defense" style, which is really quite dull and slow.

But I don't want to euphemize, you will encounter some visual bugs there. Although not in majority by any means.

During the tutorial the speech disappeared several times and while in the game the sound effects are just not there... i hear music but no SFX - at times though they do pop up. I hate that i can't go into first person mode and that the controls and camera seem to lag. Also the tutorial as such was awful on to many accounts to mention here...

This is strange because I've never had problems with sound effects.

I've also never had particular lag problems with camera or control - all lag I've experienced is bad movement performance (fps) from time to time, or rubberbanding.

The tutorial is really not a work of genius, so how about you skipped it, lol?

I think the speech there is broken up once, as an effect of sloppy revision at CR 2.0 (the combat system got changed, and thus the Tutorial had to be adapted).

I doubt you know about the things some people like about this game yet.

Not saying it's perfect, but not really because of the reasons you've listed :)

Like its been said you can press their keyboard shortcut or there is a close button in the top right of windows... like with all windows on... err... windows.

Like it's been said, thats odd, i've never had sound issues like that either. What card ya using?

I hate that i can't go into first person mode

Just out of curiosity cos i've seen it mentioned elsewhere, why is FPM so important? =P

and that the controls and camera seem to lag. Also the tutorial as such was awful on to many accounts to mention here...

Like it's been said could ya try and describe 'seem to lag' more accurately?

I do and i'm not =P Besides, the problems you describe are all about gameplay mechanics - not exactly Matrix related.

And theres plenty of diverse MMO players currently playing MxO so you can't exactly say 'stay away' either. Of course you're entitled to feel the way you do, afterall MMOs are a hugely subjective experience, but thats no reason to deter others from finding out if they feel differently.

If you like sci-fi then try either SWG, which plays much better and probably has more diversity , EVE online if you like space games or City of Heroes if you want something similar to the Matrix, again much better...

Yes, super heroes with capes is oh so like the Matrix ¬.¬

Hey guys and thanks for the input and for not flaming me.

I actually found the keymapping thing when a friend of mine tested the game play. I am going to play for the 30 days i have and will at least give it a chance. My initial frustration came from that so many things went wrong at the same time and thus everything felt bad, maybe i was wrong? We will see.

It's hard to explain the camera issue. There seem to be three different settings - static, follow and chase. Static was a mess since it is just that, static, so you can't tell where your going. Chase is almost as bad so it is follow that i will use. I had an issue with the camera snapping to place when i tilted up and down but like i said, it's hard to explain.

Regarding the sound. This is the first game i have had problems with in this fashion but when my friend created an account there were no issues at all. Now (i am currently online as i write this) i am in a square with some trees and it's raining. The rain sound effects suddenly stop and then return after a few second and this seem to happen more often when i turn the character around or if i run around? I use a Terratec sound card and have had no other issues with other games so this is strange.

One other thing is that the jumping doesn't appear to have any use? There are a lot of crates and what ever that i easily could jump over but the system woun't let me? Also when pressing the jump button there is a delay of approx 0.5-1.0 seconds which is really annoying.

But you know what... i'll give it a shot and get back to you all.

    Oops, must've forgotten that :)

Chase is almost as bad so it is follow that i will use. I had an issue with the camera snapping to place when i tilted up and down but like i said, it's hard to explain.

With Static, the camera won't adapt its angle to your character's (influenced by right mouse key and arrow keys, in case of walking also the left mouse key), and you can only turn it around manually, with the left mouse key.

Follow and Chase makes the camera stay behind your character all the time (though you can still turn it around manually with the left mouse key, but it'll return to default when you let it off while moving, or vice versa).

One difference I've noticed is that with Follow, the camera strictly stays behind you to 180°, while with Chase, it's slightly inert when you make turns.

I think I get what you're talking about. If you move the camera up or down (no matter what mouse key), it snaps back to normal as soon as you move. You can move the camera while running, but if you let it off, it'll snap back to normal again.

This is a feature of the Chase mode, you shouldn't get this with Follow.

Regarding the sound. This is the first game i have had problems with in this fashion but when my friend created an account there were no issues at all. Now (i am currently online as i write this) i am in a square with some trees and it's raining. Ah, that. Yes, I've experience this a few times - sometimes, the rain effect changes between loud and quiet like all 15 seconds, I think that's random.

Once, I've even experienced the rain effect popping in and disappearing this way when there was no rain at all.

I think it's a bug, not your soundcard. Again, I've personally experienced this only a few times.

One other thing is that the jumping doesn't appear to have any use? There are a lot of crates and what ever that i easily could jump over but the system woun't let me? Also when pressing the jump button there is a delay of approx 0.5-1.0 seconds which is really annoying.

Yea, the lag. In my case, this tends to happen from time to time (sometimes right after I've logged in and the computer is still struggling with loading up all the stuff, or whatever). You'll also experience rubberbanding and other crap lag effects sometimes.

Anyway, the performance is more than often perfect, and you should not experience any of this.

There are certain objects you simply can't jump over - as there are objects you can't jump on. Some are too big, others to high. When you're level 10, you'll get Hyper Jump, though.

Well I guess I need to defend SOE a little here for perhaps the first time on these forums. SOE did nothing to screw this game up. They did a small combat revamp, but one that really was not that intrusive, and they have fixed quite a few bugs and quests. I would think the only problem I have with soe concerning MxO is how they really have done nothing to take the game forward. It somewhat sits silent on the station exchange to attract people to the subscription. The game really has not changed much, nor added much, since it left WB.

That said, for the guy trying the game, if you like community and group activities in a vast sci-fi area, MxO is your game. If you are a solo player, I have to be honest that you will neither level very quickly, nor gear up very quickly. Solo this game can be a very very arduous and quiet place, BUT the community is great. The indie internet radio stations you can listen to in game are great, and the city has a great deal to explore. It's dangerous and challenging, and PvP is quite well done.

This, of course, is my opinion. I leveled to 30, mostly solo in several months, and most of my levels were more quickly gained when I was in a group. I simply didnt have time to play 2 games at once so I put my characters on hiatus.

BTW, the constructs are beautiful, make sure you check them out on your way through. This game isn't great by itself, but with the community and some help, you might just mess up and have a good time.

Played (more than a month): SWG, Second Life, Tabula Rasa, Lineage 2, Everquest 2, EvE, MxO, Ryzom.

Tried: WoW, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Everquest, WWII Online, Planetside

    Beta: Lotro, Tabula Rasa, WAR.

    No problemo

Aye, initial frustration can make people do crazy things alright ;)

I can't really comment/help here cause i've just got so used to the camera controls it's become second nature to me. Like they say, pratice makes perfect.

    But
i play in Chase and i'll try and explain that a little bit. It follows your characters movements behind and at an angled view above your character, from there other camera movement is controlled via your mouse buttons. Holding left allows you to move the camera around its pivot, your character remaining stationary. At the same time as this you can run about. However, it you are walking using ctrl then the camera sticks to behind you. Holding right allows you to move the camera and your character will follow it's movement. Good for turning while moving with the keyboard. Then theres holding both left and right which enables auto run and right click's camera+character movement system. Good for when you only have one hand free.

Oh yeah, when ya let go of a mouse button when you've moved it from default it'll return to behind ya when ya move. Follow snaps back instead of smoothly doing it like chase.

One other thing is that the jumping doesn't appear to have any use? There are a lot of crates and what ever that i easily could jump over but the system woun't let me? Also when pressing the jump button there is a delay of approx 0.5-1.0 seconds which is really annoying.

You'd be surprised how many newbies get frustrated at those crates =P But yeah, they're just static pieces of decorative enviroment so no jumping on em. Jumping is mostly used in navigation, that is to say jumping down from building tops, over fences and the such. Hyper jump is where the real jumpign usefullness comes in handy tho. Straight to the top of skyscrapers, hehe.

But you know what... i'll give it a shot and get back to you all.
