Quick initial thoughts after 30 mins of beta played...

quick background. Im 32 been playing muds mmos since i betad uo all through eq1 eq2 wow vanguard beta. i have been playing wow for the past 2 years. i really want to get away from it so as always i tried the new thing. My initial impression is this. No i am not a wow fanboy. I am an mmo fanboy. LOTRO is well just average. I didnt see any glaring problems for the first 1/2 hour i played nor did i see anything that imediatly grabbed me. Honestly i think its a good game. But its just an average mmo at the start. Please note i said just for the first 30 mins. This could change as i progress farther into it.

This i think is really whats the problem at least with me. I remember the glory days of mmos.EQ1 pre luclin. Wow is good it does things right we all know this thats all that needs to be said. I think im my case and in others we have put so much time into wow or our other game that just an everage mmo isnt going to pull us away from that game. We want to be pulled away but we just havent found the one. I really think im going to have to run across an amazingly spetacular game that does everything exactly right to pull me away from wow. As sas as that is it is the truth.

Ill keep an open mind and hope LOTRO hooks me but this is just my quick first impression.

It will wheel you in inch by inch.

As for first impressions in new games and the WHOA feeling.

That's all over for me and has been for a long time.

Never will i experience the same awe i had when i started playing Ultima online or Everquest I.

    Never.

Can't lie..there's a lot of "more of  the same" in LotRO..but there's some new twists there if you keep at it a bit longer....

But it will never be a revolutionary experience....

ya i think that might be the case. Sometimes i wonder if my time with mmmos have come and gone but im a gamer for life. And so ill keep playing the game that satisfies the urge, but ill keep hoping and looking for that game that brings back the old memories and feelings i used to have while playing something like eq1 or uo.

The first time I played I made a Guardian and I thought the first 6 levels were the most boring game in existance, the next night I made a Lore Master with the same result, I found my class on the third try with a Minstrel and turned into a drooling fanbois. The game may or may bot be your cup od tea but try a couple of classes and wait till after the newbie instance ( first five or six levels) before tossing it. That is why I keep stressing for anyone semi interested try the open beta Apr 06  unless you don't mind gamblung 50 bucks.

There is maybe just one mmo that has this kind of story telling (ffxi) and yet, you sit here and say, that in 30 minutes, lotro does nothing different? are you insane? did you just skip through the story line? lol

In my case Wyzwun I loved the graphics and the story line , I just needed to play a different class. Same thing happened to the guy I gave a buddy key to. He thought LoTRO was MEH for the first week, then he switched to a different class and the guy is a addict.

Having a solid, playable MMO at launch is a huge incentive for me.  You'd think that would be a given in the industry.

I'm right there with you.  I'm in my 30s and the same feeling may never be attainable.  Much like a narcotic or "first time", once you have been hit, the hit is never again as intense.  Yes, refined and still enjoyable but the moment of discovery will never be the same after.  I think as time goes by and our generation (X) grows older, this will become a common theme. Good and bad games will come and go.  I guess we Xer's will have to keep perspective whenever we play a new game and remember that our criticism should not be vested in rediscovering that "same new feeling".  Just my two cents...
