I'm also trying to find a good rpg space shooter. So far I've found jumpgate and Vendetta. But both of them look out dated. And I don't even think people play them any more. Are there any good space rpg's were killing an enemy depends on how well you fly. Well I don't mind skill levels and rpg factor, But I mean were I actualy fly and kill, like the system jumpgate or vendetta uses. My main concern is im looking for something with active players and something that I don't have to gouge my eyes out becuase of garbage graphics. Thanks again for the expert advice you all offer. I've been searching for over 8 hours so far. lol

To be honest, the shooter elements are kind of bleh. It's nothing like any skill-based space shooter. It uses a soft locking system. Basically, you have this massive target reticle which anybody's grandmother can keep an enemy in. If an enemy is inside that, and you fire, it rolls the dice to see if you hit. As far as dodging fire, enemies use the same stat-based to-hit system. You can "barrel roll" to dodge by tapping a button twice quickly, but this is basically garbage too. The maneuver has a cooldown, is easily done with almost all enemy weapons, and you can dodge fire from any direction by simply doing it. There's also no throttle. In terms of speed, you have three settings. Normal speed, speed while braking, and speed while boosting.
It does have a decent amount of quests, but none of these are particularly amazing. The PvE gets even more annoying when you realize how the zones are structured. Basically, they're arranged in a straight line from the main base of one faction to the main base of the other, with the zones getting higher in level as you approach the middle.
Don't take my word for it, though. It's free, so go ahead and give it a try. It might be fun for a few days, but I seriously doubt you'll be playing it beyond that if you like Jumpgate or Vendetta.
The game is pretty crappy tbh, but being fun makes up for it.
A Work in Progress.

DarkSpace is a good space game. It is primarily PvP and as close to twitch based as you will get outside of a first person view.
There is a demo mode, which allows you to play as long as you like with a restricted selection of ships, or the subscribed mode which allows full ship access.
You can see a short video some of the players made here, which is essentially a very cut down version of the games history.
It is quite old in game terms, getting on past 6 years now, but it is still good and quite unique in how it plays. The graphics are still reasonable given it's age, and the dev team are working on updating some of them.
Take a look at the game, it's only a relatively small download and you might even enjoy it :-)

SWG has great space combat... the rest is... meh.
And check out Infinity too.
no wait.....its still in development
Real time combat, no classes, no levels and no skills.

You could try Freelancer, not a MMO but it still rox on space combat. With some of the addons it's very large and intresting.
And with 128 player servers (or server hack with more) you are still able to party/share missions.
I'm also waiting for Infinity, that game comes closest to Freelancer.
I think EVE Online is the best space MMO. The fact that you don't have to grind XP to gain levels, and that anyone can progress whether they work or have school at the same pace as other players is a good thing. New players can very quickly bring something to the table for established groups, whether it be hauling for industrial groups, or tackling for PvP groups. The opportunity is there for new players to get involved. Most games rely on you having to play countless hours (For a new player you could be lookign at 2 months to get to 70 to raid with end gamers in some of the MMO's), before you're able to contribute.
There's a learning curve involved, but what MMO doesn't have that? And, would it be worth our time if it wasn't difficult enough to take time to learn? If you find a good corp and/or corp/alliance to get into, the learning curve will be easier to get past. Before you know it, you've got EVEmon installed and you're planning out your skills for six months in advance. There's no classes, no levels, just people training what they want to do and numerous ways to earn currency to afford your goals.
Earth and Beyond
er..wait.. *sighs* Eve

Dang, you had to say Earth & Beyond. It took me 2 years, to get over that being shut down. I really miss that game.
