Good space combat rpg?

I'm also trying to find a good rpg space shooter.  So far I've found jumpgate and Vendetta.  But both of them look out dated.  And I don't even think people play them any more.  Are there any good space rpg's were killing an enemy depends on how well you fly.  Well I don't mind skill levels and rpg factor,  But I mean were I actualy fly and kill, like the system jumpgate or vendetta uses.  My main  concern is im looking for something with active players and something that I don't have to gouge my eyes out becuase of garbage graphics.  Thanks again for the expert advice you all offer. I've been searching for over 8 hours so far. lol

Yeah I've been pondering that one, Does it have quest and such ?

Space Cowboy has subpar graphics, to be honest.  The gears look alright, but the quality of the terrain is terrible, featuring some super low quality textures and very poor geometry.  Everything else in the game's looks, like the monsters, is just average.

To be honest, the shooter elements are kind of bleh.  It's nothing like any skill-based space shooter.  It uses a soft locking system.  Basically, you have this massive target reticle which anybody's grandmother can keep an enemy in.  If an enemy is inside that, and you fire, it rolls the dice to see if you hit.  As far as dodging fire, enemies use the same stat-based to-hit system.  You can "barrel roll" to dodge by tapping a button twice quickly, but this is basically garbage too.  The maneuver has a cooldown, is easily done with almost all enemy weapons, and you can dodge fire from any direction by simply doing it.  There's also no throttle.  In terms of speed, you have three settings.  Normal speed, speed while braking, and speed while boosting.

It does have a decent amount of quests, but none of these are particularly amazing.  The PvE gets even more annoying when you realize how the zones are structured.  Basically, they're arranged in a straight line from the main base of one faction to the main base of the other, with the zones getting higher in level as you approach the middle.

Don't take my word for it, though.  It's free, so go ahead and give it a try.  It might be fun for a few days, but I seriously doubt you'll be playing it beyond that if you like Jumpgate or Vendetta.

That's pretty much all it is.

The game is pretty crappy tbh, but being fun makes up for it.

    Try SWG: Jump to lightspeed.
  • KurushKurush Member Posts: 1,303
JtL is kind of sux, really, when it comes to space shooters.  It's a great addition to SWG for fans of that game, but either Vendetta or Jumpgate are better in terms of space flight.

are you talking about twitch style? if so i dont know any, but it sounds like you would enjoy eve online, it isnt twitch, but its fun as hell.

DarkSpace is a good space game. It is primarily PvP and as close to twitch based as you will get outside of a first person view.

There is a demo mode, which allows you to play as long as you like with a restricted selection of ships, or the subscribed mode which allows full ship access.

You can see a short video some of the players made here, which is essentially a very cut down version of the games history.

It is quite old in game terms, getting on past 6 years now, but it is still good and quite unique in how it plays. The graphics are still reasonable given it's age, and the dev team are working on updating some of them.

Take a look at the game, it's only a relatively small download and you might even enjoy it :-)

I would have to say EVE online, and SWG.

SWG has great space combat... the rest is... meh.

I may hate what SOE did to the ground game of SWG, but even I'll admit that JtL (Jump to Lightspeed) is one of the best space combats I've ever played (Star Wars BFII was better) simply because you could land on enemy ships and such.  However, for an MMO, SWG has the best.

EVE is a great game, but in my experience people who come to it looking for a "space shooter" end up walking away bitter, angry and confused and write nasty posts about EVE in online gaming forums ....

Sweet, Thanxs for all this GREAT advice. Well Eve is to 3rd person for me, I loved games like STRIKE commander were the decisions you made affected the game world and your profit. But anyways Vendetta And Jumpgate Have outdated graphics are both installs are only like 150 megs lol. But they both allow you to turn your spacecraft around while still moving forward and fire on your enemy. VERY REALISTiC. I doubt JTL has this feature lol. But as far as updated graphics its probaly going to be my best bet for now until the new space shooters come out. Although I do like a game Were Skill helps you win. If I'm a better pilot I hope that lets me win. :).

You might consider either Projectile Entropia or Eve-online. Atleast try out Eve-online before you say no. Its defintally one of the most pvp intensive games out there. As for project entropia, its a bit old. But a great game non the less.

    And check out Infinity too.

    no wait.....its still in development

Real time combat, no classes, no levels and no skills.

yeah im waiting for that infinity my self also.. As far as entropia Im playing that now.  But it gets boring you either have to work 6 hours a day to make money to play, or deposit real money.  And lately most people dont wanna have fun there all about making money, Becuase you can export the ingame credits to your bank account.   The graphics are not to bad I over ride th defualt game 4x anti alias with nvidia control panel to 16x and use my card settings to force the game to look better and boy does it gleem.  anyways, I'm with you on infinity i cant wait :)

Correction, SWG could have great space combat, if the ship building player market wasn't dead and people actually used it. The game is all but empty, and the skies even emptier.

No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.

EVE Online is the best space MMO
  • mwbreurmwbreur Member Posts: 84

You could try Freelancer, not a MMO but it still rox on space combat. With some of the addons it's very large and intresting.

And with 128 player servers (or server hack with more) you are still able to party/share missions.

I'm also waiting for Infinity, that game comes closest to Freelancer.

I think EVE Online is the best space MMO. The fact that you don't have to grind XP to gain levels, and that anyone can progress whether they work or have school at the same pace as other players is a good thing. New players can very quickly bring something to the table for established groups, whether it be hauling for industrial groups, or tackling for PvP groups. The opportunity is there for new players to get involved. Most games rely on you having to play countless hours (For a new player you could be lookign at 2 months to get to 70 to raid with end gamers in some of the MMO's), before you're able to contribute.

There's a learning curve involved, but what MMO doesn't have that? And, would it be worth our time if it wasn't difficult enough to take time to learn? If you find a good corp and/or corp/alliance to get into, the learning curve will be easier to get past. Before you know it, you've got EVEmon installed and you're planning out your skills for six months in advance. There's no classes, no levels, just people training what they want to do and numerous ways to earn currency to afford your goals.

Dang, you had to say Earth & Beyond. It took me 2 years, to get over that being shut down. I really miss that game.
