Latency in MMORPGS?

Hi.

Few questions:

What is considered a good enough latency for mmorpgs? Is 200-250 an ok latency? or is it too high ?

Right now I'm playing on the LOTRO beta, and getting an avarage of 170 latency (I'm playing on US server from europe).

My main question is:

Is my latency gonna go higher when the game goes live or will it stay approx the same as in beta?

I would appreciate if someone with knowledge about this can help.

Thanks

My latency usually hovers somewhere between 80 and 120. Personally I find that anything under 200 is just fine, 200-300 is bearable, 300+ you're having issues. Keep in mind that your performance rate will fluctuate depending on several factors, and that ingame lag is very often not due to connectivity issues. That being said, yes, it is possible that your ms will either improve or worsen once the game goes live, there's no accounting for changes in server-side performance, you'll just have to wait and see, I'm afraid.

Teldil, your latency will be much smaller when the game launches because you'll have to play on Codemasters' european servers.

Latency doesn't matter so much in MMO's with auto-attack. As long as it's under 250. It's then a bigger problem in first person shooters.

I average 60-80 in WoW even in Alteric Valley, but upto 200 is bare-able for PvE, PvP I realy want no more than 100.  sure MMO are mostly autoattack but theres always situations where that split second counts when countering a spell or attack.

Yeah.  The beta you're playing is being run by Turbine.  The game will eventually be localized for Europe by Codemasters.  At that time, your latency should seriously drop.  If you're getting 170 now, expect consistent ping of under 100 then.

I play MMO's from Australia. Almost always they're in the US, and I get pings of 400-500 constantly. It doesn't hold me back. There's a lot of times where in WoW I think I could have done better when trying to kill someone in PvP. It almost never is a problem in PvE and I still do get a lot of PvP kills, even if I don't get the jump.

I think that our high pings can make it a little more challenging at times, but never is it a problem.
