Regarding ebaying / spending r/l money to acquire uber items in a game to take advantage over the others playing that game, here is what I think every time I think about it and about those persons who do it.
it's like they play with fixed dices in a friendly backgamon game.
2 queens in a friendly chess game.
Cheating and sneakily stealing money from the bank of monopoly (lol) etc
I mean, what kinda person are they that would do such things and if they don't do it in real life, why on earth do they do it in online games?
Aren't games supposed to be like a friendly r/l game? Like a match of backgamon or chess or whatever? That you want to play and have fun and have a fun time with your friends and whatnot? If you wouldn't cheat in a game of chess why do you cheat in an online game?
Beats me. :-/

If they think it makes them bether let them buy. A good player will always beat a player like that:P
You obviously haven't played Lineage
There's nothing player's skill can do if you do 400 dmg, the other does 800 and you drink a HoT potion while the other drinks insta heal potions, too expenssive to be purchased by normal players.
He just sits there with his uber overenchanted weapon, armor and boss jewels (all ebayed ofc), spamming his insta heal pots (bought with ebayed ingame currency) and after a few seconds...."I pAwNz YUss"

Comparing an MMO to monopoly is one of the stupidist analogies I've ever heard of. It's like comparing an apple to the empire state building. Monopoly, backgammon, and the like are games that have a definative beginning and end, as well as a clear cut winner and loser. MMOs do not have an end, nor do they have a winner or loser. You don't have to mind numbingly farm for days or weeks to get enough currency to buy boardwalk. You don't have to farm for days or weeks on end just to roll the dice. Everything in monopoly comes with little to no effort. Almost everything in an MMO requires extensive effort, of which most of that effort is not enjoyable to the average person. People like to have FUN in the game. When farming is no longer fun in any way shape or form, are you in any way surprised that the average person will buy in-game currency so they can actually go back to having fun with their friends again?
Here's something to think about. People who buy currency couldn't give two sh*ts less about what you think. Sure, some are the leet kids who take mommy's credit card to feel good about themselves. But you will find that most people who buy currency are full time working professionals with a family. They put their time and effort into a real world job that means something and benefits our world. You, on the other hand, put your time and effort into a video game and spout off nonsense about how they are lazy and worthless. Believe me, they think that YOU are worthless (not to mention moronic). After all, YOU'RE the one spending your life in a video game. YOU'RE the idiot spending countless real life hours farming for currency. YOU are the peon. An MMO does not define their life or make them feel good about themselves. When they hear people like you complain about them, they just laugh, because YOU are the idiot who wastes away your life in game farming when you could spend a few hours of real life work and buy everything in a fraction of the time. They don't get offended that you don't like them. They just laugh at you.
Play the way you want to play.
FTR I cheat in online pool all the time, and if my friend goes to the bathroom I cheat in boardgames
Lets just limit all MMORPG players down to 2 hours a day/5 days a week maximum playing time (the amount of time I can really afford to play) and then you get back to me about "fairness" in an MMORPG.
In the boardgame examples you mentioned, normally every player in the game has the same amount of time to accumulate the same set of advantages.... whereas in an MMO this is just not the case.
As long as MMO's reward people who have who spend a large blocks of time vs those who can't...expect gold buying to continue..
If just one good game operated the way I described in my first paragraph, I'd be there in a shot....

people arent -unlike within chess where everyone starts the same way- equal and therefore have to deal with different problems
one group has no money but a lot o time so they invest a lot of time to become the best
one group has good amount of money but small amount of time so they buy time from others in form of items/accs whatever
thats how it works
