When I get on the Metro, I'm sometimes given a choice between something like "King's Row" and "King's Row 2". What's the difference? There doesn't seem to be more than one station in that area. Are they mirrors to handle excessive traffic or something? If I go to KR and my teammate goes to KR2, will we be able to see each other?
There's probably a really obvious answer that I'm overlooking.

Mirrors to handle excessive traffic is the answer here.
if you go to KR1 and your Team mate goes to KR2 you will not be in the same zone and could not see each other.

Thanks guys. I take this to mean that my best bet will always be to go to the highest numbered mirror?
depends.
if you're looking to lead a group and haveing trouble finding the folks you want for your group its a good idea to hit the number 1 zone because of the larget numbers, but generally the higher number zones are less crowded so are better for actually playing.

I always go for the higher number area myself and have set it up that way with my friends so we are all on the same page.
All it is is another instanced zone.

I aim for the #1 zone. I think that alot more people go there
If you are running a kill X number of mobs mission, you sometimes have more luck in the higher numbered instanced zones because there are usually fewer people in them.
If you are running an inside mission (instanced), anyone on the team can enter it from any instance of the zone and all team members will see the mission entrance on their map.
Just a couple of other tidbits there.
Good to know. I usually aim for the higher numbered zone because I want to minimize lag and because the city feels more "real" to me when I don't see a hero on every corner and rooftop.
If everyone always go for the highest number zone then that zone will have the most number of people in it all the time. Plus since the zones are exactly the same there is no reason to choose one over another unless you are trying to join a group or are part of a group and are trying to get to them.
Well, my theory is that a mirror zone gets created to handle overflow from the original, and therefore the odds are better that the newer zone has the fewest players in it at any given time. That may not always be accurate, but I think the odds are in my favor.
Yes, it is for overflow. I have seen zones locked before to keep people from overloading a zone, but I have also seen a Zone 2 locked and a Zone 1 not. Which means that the Zone 2 has more people in it. At the time the Zone is created yes the original zone is the fullest, but I rarely stay in one zone for very long (IE. indoor missions, or other cities). So in reality people switch zones all the time between the Zones that are available. Because of this if everyone choose the same zone all the time when they exited the game that zone will fill up or be the most full.

Because I play in UK timezones, 5 hours ahead of US most of the time when I start playing there is only one zone, and the second gets added around USA after school time to handle the excess. I am sure a few more get added later but I am asleep by then.
The funniest thing I saw must be because so many people pick the highest number zone or the lowest and not between. One time, soon after launch when there were heaps of players and lots of lowbies, I saw there was a Kings row 1,2,3 and 8. I can only assume that at one point they needed 8 KRs to handle all the heroes, but while things calmed down and they could start removing instances of the zone as they emptied, maybe KR8 never emptied cos people kept picking the highest zone. I know I did, just out of curiosity. They certainly didn't lock it though, so they could empty and shut it.
